Pack to the Future
Both in reality and fantasy, Cam Akers is one of the most exciting rookies coming into the league. He enters an offense that desperately needs a new face at the RB position and I expect Akers to be that guy. Due to COVID, it may take a few weeks, but Akers should finish the season as the clear RB1 on the Rams and has top-24 fantasy potential as well.Every year it seems like Jamison Crowder is supposed to really break out but it just never happens. He has some solid games but he's extremely reliant on target share. With the Jets adding Breshad Perriman and rookie Denzel Mims this offseason, Crowder has more competition than ever. He's a solid bench WR in PPR and gets a major downgrade in standard leagues.
Michael Petropoulos
BRoto Fantasy
Jamison Crowder is under drafted every season, and should be a solid WR3 again this season. He was 14th in target share in 2019 and that should not change much. Furthermore, Gase utilizes his slot receiver in the end zone more than any other position. Sign me up for Crowder.
Mike Tagliere
FantasyPros
The Rams were going to draft a running back - we knew that after they interviewed a ton of them in the draft process. What we didn't know was that they'd take one with their first pick in the draft. While Darrell Henderson is a threat to Akers' overall workload, they clearly know what they have in Henderson, and drafted Akers early. It seems like Henderson is going to be the lesser part of the timeshare, while Akers is the early-down back and likely to receive goal-line work. There's a chance Henderson has a bigger role than anticipated, which prevents us from trusting Akers as anything more than a high-end RB3.Did you know Crowder finished as the No. 31 wide receiver in half-PPR formats last year? The Jets moved on from Robby Anderson and brought in Breshad Perriman, who's now with his fourth team in as many years, and drafted rookie Denzel Mims in the second round. While you can assume those players walk in and see targets, it's Crowder who'll likely be Darnold's go-to guy. He may not be a sexy pick, but he'll get the job done for a cheap WR4.
Brandon Funston
The Athletic
My bet for rookie RB to see most touches - skills to be a featured back (with a little pass game improvement), and team clearly lacks confidence in D. Henderson in that role
Dan Harris
FantasyPros
Crowder was the 31st-ranked wide receiver in half-PPR formats last year, yet is being drafted as a WR5 this year. And that's despite the fact that the Jets have two new receivers who won't be able to develop chemistry with Sam Darnold in any preseason games. Crowder is never going to pop - his average depth of target is too low and he isn't a huge end zone threat. So yes, his ceiling will be limited. But his floor is extremely high, and he should greatly outperform his draft position.
Derek Lofland
FantasyPros
The Rams may have as many as four members in their RBBC, Akers is the early favorite to be the lead back in one of the most intriguing timeshare situations in the NFL.
Jason Petropoulos
BRoto Fantasy
Akers was a 5-star HS recruit, played behind one of the worst O-Lines in the country at FSU and still put up 1,100 and 8 his freshman year. He can rush, pass, and block, is durable, and was a 2nd round pick by a team that had just spent a 3rd round pick on a RB the year prior. Plus, even in a down year last season, Gurley put up 14 TDs in that offense. Akers is a RB2 with high-end RB1 upside.
Kyle Yates
FantasyPros
This is one of the most puzzling selections to me in the entire draft. While I wasn't a huge Akers fan heading into the draft, I believed he could have value as a pass-catching back or a player that would thrive being moved out into space. Darrell Henderson is still there and could be the 1st/2nd down back, while Akers assumes the 3rd down work. However, this OL is still horrendous and is not going to help these RBs at all. This could be a David Montgomery type selection in year one, where the talent level is there, but the OL just simply can't hold up. Akers is a very risky pick in Dynasty leagues.Crowder's not exactly the most exciting pick, but he's proven that he can be extremely productive in this offense. This season, Crowder has Breshad Perriman and Denzel Mims as competition for targets and neither of them are going to be extremely reliable right away. Sam Darnold trusts Crowder and we could see him return value yet again in 2020. It's not the most exciting pick, but it's a smart pick.
Ben Wasley
The Fantasy First Down
Despite being 7th in total yards, the Rams somehow managed to give only 1500 of them to their RBs. While that's less than ideal, there is room for growth. There are rumblings that the Rams want to do more on the ground and with Darrell Henderson and Malcolm Brown proving underwhelming to this point, it's entirely possible that by halfway through the season, this is Cam Akers's backfield. Given the huge TD and fantasy point upside that role has previously held, a return to form for the Rams could make the young rookie a fantasy stud. Be very aware that he'll start the season slowly but he could rumble home with a head of steam if things fall his way.Jamison Crowder is the number one receiver in the Jets offence and with Sam Darnold back, the O-line improving and better outside receivers to draw coverage, this is a great opportunity to have a breakout PPR season. His upside really hinges on how many receptions Le'Veon Bell and Chris Herndon steal around the middle of the field and that's why you shouldn't draft him too high, but he is a nice, safe late option.
Kevin Wheeler
Draftwize
Cam Akers has the easiest path to a featured role among these rookie RBs in terms of proven competition in their backfield. Akers also happens to be a baller. @Ihartitz
Seth Miller
Crossroads Fantasy Football
His week 1 in 2019 summed up the type of production you can expect from guys like him perfectly. 17 targets, 14 receptions, for 99 yards. A solid 90th in YPC. His target competition will be greater than Demaryius Thomas being 4th on the team in targets this year. Mims, Perriman, and Herndon will all be bigger threats to Crowder than anything he had last year. Even if we think he still reaches 100 targets, it took 122 to barely be flex worthy in 2019. Lets look at some things he's bad at: 84th in YPR and Yards per Target, 50th in catch rate, 91st in AVG target distance, 72nd in target separation, 54th in drop rate, 70th in fantasy points per target.
