FantasyPros
When a team drafts a running back in the first round, history suggests they're going to use him a ton. In fact, there's been just one running back drafted in the first round over the last eight years who hasn't touched the ball at least 197 times, and that was Rashaad Penny, who's continually injured (it was also a shock to hear his name in the first round). Etienne was a favorite of many in this draft class, and is now tied to an offense that has Trevor Lawrence at the helm rather than Gardner Minshew/Mike Glennon. The Jaguars have also been using him as a wide receiver in camp, which is never a bad thing. In PPR formats, targets are worth 2.5 times as much as carries. He'll share some work with James Robinson, but make no mistake about it, Etienne is the lead back with the most talent.Have we seen Edmonds carry the workload for the Cardinals before? Well, kind of. Despite Kenyan Drake struggling through much of 2020, there were just two games where Edmonds finished with more than eight carries, which is certainly a concern. The Cardinals went out and signed James Conner in free agency, but he's proven to be incapable of staying healthy with a full workload, and it wasn't a pricey contract, so maybe we see Edmonds in a bigger role. Whatever the case, we know he has the pass-catching role locked down, which has value in itself, as he was a flex-type option most weeks (he was an RB3 or better 62.5 percent of the time). This offense is going to score points, so if Edmonds were to get a slight bump in carries, he could make his way into the RB2 conversation. Draft him as an RB3/flex and hope that's the case. Just know that he's still yet to crack 100 carries in a season.
Kyle Yates
FantasyPros
Urban Meyer is certainly known for valuing speed on the football field and the Jaguars have not been shy about their intent to draft Kadarius Toney if he were there at pick No. 25 in the NFL Draft. With Toney off the board, they went with the explosive RB prospect that can absolutely fly in Etienne. My belief is that the Jaguars intend to deploy Etienne as a traditional RB, but then also as a player that they will use all over the formation and simply get the ball in his hands. If that's the case, Etienne's going to be extremely valuable for fantasy football right away. He's a true home-run threat and he's an excellent receiver out of the backfield. As we sit here in early June, I wouldn't be shocked if Etienne finishes as a top-15 RB in fantasy right out of the gates. My Very Early Projection: 184-881-5 rushing & 71-607-2 receiving.Edmonds was receiving some hype earlier this off-season that he could be in line for a huge workload. I never bought into that thinking at all and it didn't shock me to see the Cardinals add Conner to this backfield. Edmonds will have his set role, which will have him seeing 10-12 touches per game, but he's never going to step into this massive workload that would push him into top-24 consideration for fantasy football. He's a fine RB3 for your roster that receives a bump in Full PPR formats, but we should temper our expectations for the dynamic RB in 2021.
Mark Ringo
Sleepers and Busts
Etienne is an explosive RB who joins his Clemson teammate, QB Trevor Lawrence, in Jacksonville. Both former Tigers should provide some much needed pop to a stagnant Jaguars offense. The concern 1.) It sounds like Urban Meyer sees Etienne as a slash player- Curtis Samuel, Percy Harvin, etc. They want to line him up part of the time at WR. This is different than the position he played at Clemson for Coach Dabo Swinney which was RB. It could take him some time to get comfortable in his new role. Etienne has some serious wheels and will make plenty of big plays. Ringo's comp- a combo of Alvin Kamara/Jamaal Charles.James Conner was signed in free agency, but the good news for Edmonds is the Cardinals didn't address RB in the draft. Conner has had injury issues in the past. He seems too slow for Kliff Kingbury's high octane offense. If Conner goes down, all of a sudden Edmonds is in line for a big workload. Kyler Murray will steal some TDS, but he also opens up running lanes on the read option. Edmonds could be a sneaky pick on draft day.
Kevin Wheeler
The Draft Zone
Running with the WR's in rookie camp can only help his versatility. He played 84 career snaps in the slot or out wide in 55 games at Clemson, which may not seem like a lot, but the college game is different.Edmonds is being perceived as the RB1 in Arizona, but we should be a bit concerned about how he'll be used. He had 52 receptions last year, but his Vegas O/U is 45.5 receptions WITH OUT Kenyan Drake there. He's only had one goal line carry in 3 seasons and he's never hit 100 carries in a season.
Derek Lofland
FantasyPros
Etienne will have to compete for touches with James Robinson, but teams do not take a running back with the 25th pick to be a backup. Etienne will have a receiving role and should see carries and be an upside flex option, especially in PPR formats.Edmonds is currently the lead back in Arizona, but he will spit carries with James Conner. Edmonds is an upside flex option in a very good offense.
Wolf of Roto Street
Roto Street Journal
Gross Year 1 landing spot -- Urban Meyer already pledging 3-headed nightmare, though the draft capital should suggest otherwise and his talent could send him into a souped-up Percy Harvin roleDrake left, Edmonds drew featured back endorsements from Kingsbury... and then James Conner joined. Now Rondale Moore could threaten receiving snaps. Conner has a nose for the end zone, can catch, and could play a ~200ish touch role. A big name rookie would've been more damning, but this isn't great, either, and I can't see Edmonds being more than a mediocre-at-best flex except for the games Conner is hurt.
Joe Pisapia
FantasyPros
I know Kliff Kingsbury went on record as saying Chase Edmonds was a starting back in the NFL. Don't confuse starting with workhorse. They are not the same thing. James Connor was brought in to share the workload and barring an injury to one, this seems like a backfield that is destined to frustrate fantasy owners, even if you roster both. Edmonds as RB depth is ok, but I'd prefer a WR in my flex spot over Edmonds.
