Mike Tagliere FantasyPros | The hype on Godwin has reached its peak as he's expected to make a splash in Bruce Arians' new offense. With Mike Evans stealing quite a large share of the targets, you have to wonder just how high the ceiling is for Godwin, as the Bucs are likely going to run the ball a bit more under Arians. Godwin is a rock-solid player, but you mustn't forget that he's the No. 2 receiver on his team, and there's also a tight end (O.J. Howard) who deserves a lot of targets by his own right. It's okay to like Godwin in 2019, but keep expectations in check | It's clear the Bears didn't think Jordan Howard fit their offensive scheme after sending him away for a sixth-round pick, right? So, what does that say about Montgomery, who they traded up into the third-round to get? Howard finished as the RB20 in his first season under Matt Nagy. Montgomery was likely the best pure runner in the draft who's already shown the ability to handle a workhorse role, and offers more in the passing-game than Howard did, though most of that work will go to Tarik Cohen. Montgomery was drafted on a team that's built to win right now, which means he'll have big value immediately |
Kevin Roberts Breaking Football | I love what I've seen from Montgomery and as a Packers fan, it brings tears to my eyes. He's going to be very good right away and I feel like I should be ranking him higher.
Dan Harris FantasyPros | If it's possible for a player to be on every single fantasy owner's breakout list, then Godwin is your guy. Although his production slowed after his hot start last year, the departure of both Adam Humphries and DeSean Jackson opens up plenty of opportunities. Add to that Bruce Arians gushing about Godwin's ability to play out of the slot and you have all the makings of a big season. But you'll need to pay for Godwin at this point if you want him. | The Bears drafted Montgomery in the third round and he has been impressive so far this preseason. If he was all there was in the Bears backfield then fantasy owners would likely be drafting him as a low-end RB1. But of course they still have Tarik Cohen and they signed Mike Davis, so Montgomery is going to need to share the workload. Given the positive talk about him leading into the season, however, Montgomery should be drafted as a mid-tier RB2. |
Brandon Funston The Athletic | Might be the leader in preseason buzz - 179 targets up for grabs with D-Jax, Humphries gone - he's in line for a can't fail amount of targets in a pass-rich offense | Draws K. Hunt comparisons because of his vision, versatility, break-tackle running style, and former KC OC M. Nagy drafting Montgomery leads to thoughts that he's looking for his next Hunt in CHI |
Michael Petropoulos BRoto Fantasy | Since PFF started tracking college football, no running back has forced more than 100 missed tackles in a season. Except David Montgomery, who has done it twice. Montgomery was an absolute workhorse for Iowa State over the course of his collegiate career, he racked up 1200 yards last season with the most missed tackles overall and the most missed tackles per attempt which is even more impressive. He's elusive, he's a good pass blocker, he wasn't super involved in the passing game and wasn't a very good route runner when given the opportunity, but showed some solid hands. Had 71 total receptions in his career without a single drop, so wouldn't be super surprised to see him get a little more work pass catching in the NFL but might need some time to develop if he wants to be a true three down back.
Kevin Wheeler Draftwize | Godwin kicked into the slot all four times the Bucs went to a 3-WR formation. That slot-plus role is the same way Bruce Arians coaxed monster seasons out of Hines Ward and Larry Fitzgerald in previous stops. Already armed with unique talent and the nut situation (no running game, no viable No 3 WR, leaky defense, aggressive quarterback, plus scheme), Godwin's chances of fulfilling lofty expectations this season are rising. @AdamLevitan Jameis Winston has played 22 snaps this preseason. Chris Godwin been on field for all 22, in slot for eight of them.
Andy Singleton Expand The Boxscore | https://youtu.be/PSAsjB0EVvM
Derek Lofland FantasyPros | Godwin was a real bright spot on this offense, posting 59 receptions for 842 yards and 7 touchdowns. He was the 25th ranked fantasy receiver last year and he has a ton of upside this year in Bruce Arian's offense that should see him have a major role. I think Godwin will evolve into one of the Top-10 fantasy receivers in the NFL.
Jason Petropoulos BRoto Fantasy | Arians also loves his Slot WRs. Hines Ward was amazing for Pittsburgh in the slot and Fitzgerald was magnificent for Arizona in the slot. Even Donnie Avery in the slot in 2012 on the colts put up a 60/781/3 line with Reggie Wayne AND TY Hilton on the team! The upside here is huge. | Jordan Howard had 1,080 total yards and 9 TDs despite seemingly disappearing from the offense at times last season. If that is the baseline for Montgomery, he'll likely match or exceed the value at his ADP. The issue? Mike Davis may be a thorn in his side after signing in the offseason, starting the first preseason game, and being backed by Nagy throughout the offseason. |
Bobby Sylvester FantasyPros | Seemingly everyone in the industry loves Godwin to breakout this year and for good reason. He is an immense talent and has the makeup of an elite red zone receiver. The issue is that the price tag has become so high that you will need him to reach that upside in order to justify the cost, and that will be difficult seeing that Mike Evans and O.J. Howard are both on his roster. | Jordan Howard is now gone after producing for fantasy owners despite lackluster efficiency. Many will take this to mean that the much more talented Montgomery will become a stud from day one, but Mike Davis is in town now too and Tarik Cohen isn't going anywhere so it might not happen quite so quickly. |
Nick Zylak Fantasy Football Advice | As per usual, I love Godwin this season. He's an incredible WR, and has produced every time he's been given the opportunity. This is the breakout season we've been waiting for. Jackson and Humphries are now gone, so it's Evans, Howard and Godwin that will be commanding the majority of the targets in Tampa's elite passing game. The return of Arians means great things for this passing attack, which already ranked first in passing yards and 4th in passing TD's per game. As if things needed to get better for Godwin...Arians has talked about using him in the slot! Arians coached the Cardinals from 2013-2017...during that stretch Larry Fitz produced 3 consecutive seasons with 105+ receptions. If Godwin is used in that same role, then he's going to finish as a low end WR 1/ high end WR 2. We've been waiting years for this moment...time to reap the fruits of our labor. | David Montgomery is a very interesting pick in the middle rounds of drafts this season. He's a better RB than Jordan Howard, and he's a much better weapon in the passing game. So, it seems like a no brainer that you should be targeting him at his 4th round ADP. They spent an early third round pick on him, their defense is still going to be elite, and their offense is on track to finish in the top 10. All of this sets Montgomery up for an amazing rookie season. There are some risks though. The Bears have said that they want to cycle in Mike Davis on early downs, and that Cohen will still be used as a pass catcher. So, this has the potential to be a committee. At the end of the day, we're going to see how they plan on running this offense during the preseason, so I'll be able to adjust my rankings accordingly. Right now, my take is that Davis is a very small threat, and that Montgomery is more likely than not to pay off his ADP. If they gave Howard 250+ carries in each of his three seasons, than Montgomery should approach that at the very least, with an expanded passing game role as well. |
Kyle Yates The Fantasy Footballers | Chris Godwin will reportedly be stepping into the Larry Fitzgerald role this season in Bruce Arians' system. This will lead to an increased amount of targets for the young and talented wideout, which could mean fantasy gold at his current ADP. The Bucs are going to be airing the ball out this season and Godwin stands to be competing with Mike Evans for the majority of the targets there. Even if we see Godwin's YPR come down, he's still an extremely intriguing fantasy option and is about as solid of a WR2 option as you can get for your team. | Montgomery steps into a dynamic offense and immediately becomes the starting running back for the Chicago Bears. Montgomery displayed exceptional elusiveness, vision and receiving ability in college and this sets him up extremely well to have a solid rookie campaign. Even with all the weapons there in Chicago, Montgomery is going to receive a ton of volume week in and week out. He's a solid RB2 for your fantasy team that you can get right now in the mid to late rounds. |
