Talk that CAR might try to scale back workload after CMC's 326 touches in '18 (finishing RB3 in half PPR scoring), but the team certainly hasn't backed up its RB in a manner that indicates that is truly the planAir Raid system of new HC Kingsbury leans heavily to the pass and history of RBs under him is concerning for DJ, but Kingsbury will likely have to conform a bit to NFL and DJ has no competition concerns
Kevin Wheeler
DraftWize
Kingsbury himself said Johnson will see an "extensive" role that could involve as many as 35 carries or 10 catches in a given game, which could return DJ to his fantasy glory days of 2016. Last season, he got a touch on 34% of plays, but the Cardinals ranked 31st in plays per game with only 56.4. In 2016, Johnson touched the ball at the same rate for a squad that ranked second with 67.9 plays per game, and the result was a league-leading 373 touches and the best fantasy running back season of the past half-decade. @ChrisRaybon
Dan Harris
FantasyPros
McCaffrey's usage last year was almost comical - he was on the field for 91% of the snaps and got nearly 100% of the running back touches for the Panthers. If you've seen pictures of him this offseason, you know he has bulked up, which is necessary if he's going to continue at anything close to the rate the Panthers utilized him last year. There's still no one of consequence behind him and so he should again see a massive workload. So long as he can again stay healthy, it's hard to envision him finishing outside the top four running backs even in standard formats. The Cardinals offense was a disaster last season, and although Johnson saw plenty of work and put up enough fantasy points to be relevant, his production from recent years went down significantly. But all of that should be just a bad memory now, with the addition of Kliff Kingsbury and Kyler Murray. Kingsbury's system doesn't focus all that much on passes to running backs, but given Johnson's talent level, he should make up for it elsewhere. Expect an elite season, albeit perhaps one that falls short of his 2016 level.
Derek Lofland
FantasyPros
McCaffrey was the 3rd ranked running back in fantasy football last year and he is one of the best duel-threat running backs in the NFL.Johnson was the victim of having a bad coaching staff and supporting cast, hopefully their offensive system will help utilize his special talents. He is a low-end RB1 that should benefit playing with rookie QB Kyler Murray in a fast paced offense.
Nick Zylak
Fantasy Football Advice
CMC is going to be a stud yet again this season. The former 4th overall pick now has 187 receptions over his first two seasons, including 107 last season. He also showed that he can produce in the TD department with 13 total TD's. There are two main knocks I have with him. One is the rushing yardage. He's a great RB, but he doesn't have the same sort of rushing yard upside as some of the other RB's do. The second is the TD's. The 13 TD's were great, but 12 of them occurred in weeks 7-13. That means that he had just one total TD in weeks 1/2/3/4/5/6/14/15/16. I'm not saying that he can't post more consistent numbers, but I trust the TD production of Kamara and Barkley just a little bit more. With all this being said, the dude is going to have 80+ receptions, and he's going to be involved every aspect of the offense. He needs to be taken in the top 5 of drafts.I have a higher ranking and projection on DJ than most people do. My argument is simple, last season was the absolute worst case scenerio for DJ. His team struggled to score TD's, his QB played terrible, and his offensive coordinator was pathetic at play calling. Despite all of this...he was able to finish as the RB 10 in half PPR leagues. This season the offense should take a complete 180. They have a new head coach in Kliff Kingsbury that wants to lead the league in plays run, and they have the first overall pick in Kyler Murray, who's a massive upgrade from Josh Rosen. In 2018 the Cardinals were dead last with just 14.1 points per game, and they ran the second fewest plays per game. At the very least, they are going to improve apon thos numbers...and that's great news for DJ. I cannot stress enough how massive of a boost it would be going from just 56 plays per game, up to 70 per game. Not to mention the fact that they might actually be in the red zone for a few of those plays. Draft DJ with confidence.
Mike Tagliere
FantasyPros
McCaffrey blew up in 2018 and it's got everyone reaching for him as a top-three selection in 2019. It's fair and you shouldn't shy away from the three-down back, but you should know that the Panthers have openly talked about scaling back his workload. He's still likely to finish as a top-five option at the position even if he loses 4-6 touches per game, as he's gamescript-proof and it's not as if Cam Newton is rushing for as many touchdowns as he used to.Now that Steve Wilks is out of town, maybe we'll get back to the normally scheduled programming with Johnson. The air-raid offense that new coach Kliff Kingsbury figures to bring to the Cardinals should give Johnson a lot more work in the passing game. While at Texas Tech, Kingsbury passed the ball on 65 percent of their plays. By comparison, there were just two teams in the NFL who hit that number in 2018. With Kyler Murray presenting elusiveness, it should only help create lanes for Johnson, even if his offensive line is still weak
Bobby Sylvester
FantasyPros
McCaffrey was exceptional last year with 1,965 yards from scrimmage. It certainly helped that he saw 107 receptions, likely because Cam Newton was playing with an injured shoulder, but let's not forget that he was only given 219 carries which could certainly increase if his passing workload decreases. McCaffrey is as safe of a week to week and season-long play as you'll find. Now that Melvin Gordon is claiming he will hold out, Johnson is the clear RB5 and will most likely be the 5th pick off the board in most drafts ahead of Hopkins. He was not as good last year, in part because of the offensive line but primarily because the Cardinals ran so few plays. That should change this year under Kingsbury so don't hesitate because of his numbers last season.
Kyle Yates
The Fantasy Footballers
CMC proved last year that he can be a workhorse back at the NFL level and I expect nothing less from him this season. If Newton's shoulder is completely healed, this Panthers offense has the potential to be dynamic and CMC will be at the center of it. Expect huge reception numbers yet again from McCaffrey!David Johnson fell into fantasy football hell last season with Mike McCoy as the OC in Arizona. Now, Kliff Kingsbury is in town with Kyler Murray and DJ is going to be leaned on heavily in this offense. The running lanes should be there with defenses regularly on their heels and DJ is going to soak up targets in this pass heavy offense. It simply comes down a question of Touchdowns...is this offense going to be explosive enough in year one with a rookie QB that David Johnson will get the scoring opportunities needed to be a top-tier RB? If you believe the answer is yes, then you should be all in on DJ at his ADP.
