Lineups
CMC may be due for slight statistical regression and the new coaching staff may look to lessen his workload, but McCaffrey had over 100 more half-PPR fantasy points than the next-best running back last season. He's the locked-and-loaded first overall pick.
Kevin Roberts
Breaking Football
Jimmy G almost got replaced this offseason and seemingly at his best, maxed out as QB14. There's also the question of a banged up roster, so I won't be riding and dying with him this year.
Draft Engine
Draft Engine
After struggling in the run game as a rookie in 2017, McCaffrey improved his per-carry average by more than a yard over the past couple of seasons. He has also led all NFL running backs in both receptions and receiving yards each of the past two seasons.Garoppolo will continue to lack fantasy upside as long as San Francisco's offense sticks with its run-first approach. The 49ers were one of only three NFL teams along with the Ravens and Vikings to run the ball more often than they passed it last season
Kyle Yates
FantasyPros
While it might sound absurd to say, there's a legitimate path for CMC to finish with more receptions this year than what he had in 2019. The Panthers are entering a rebuild and their defense saw a lot of key pieces leave for various reasons. They're going to be relying heavily on rookies and this may lead to the offense needing to keep them in games with more passing volume. If that's the case, McCaffrey's likely going to be second in line behind DJ Moore. With all that said, CMC's as easy of a pick as they come at the 1.01.This 49ers team is still going to be a run-heavy team in 2020, which limits Jimmy G's overall ceiling for fantasy football purposes to begin with. However, now that you factor in the injuries that have decimated the 49ers receiving corps, it might be wise to look elsewhere to start the season.
Elisha Twerski
numberFire
On average, the last 14 running backs to finish as the RB1 in half-PPR leagues have scored 102.3 fewer points the following season. CMC had 403 touches last year. Prior to that, there had been 26 instances of a back totaling at least 400 touches since 1995. On average, those running backs totaled 115.6 fewer touches, nearly a half-yard less per touch, 721 fewer total yards, and 6.7 fewer scores in the following season. Obviously, trends can be (and have been) broken, but it is something to think about as you dish out the most valuable commodity in fantasy.
David Zach
FantasyPros
Reigning RB1, new QB, new coaches, additional WRs
Ben Wasley
The Fantasy First Down
Christian McCaffrey was spectacular in 2019. With over 1000 yards rushing and receiving along with 100+ receptions and 19 total TDs combined for a historic season. CMC may not reach the same heights in 2020, but he's still the clear number one overall pick in most formats. There is some risk with McCaffrey in the form of workload-induced injury, his team's awful defense and overall regression. These are legitimate fears but they're far from unique to the Panthers RB and there's no way you should be taking anyone but this guy No. 1 overall.Jimmy G has tremendous weekly upside on the rare occasions when the 49ers get in a shootout, most weeks though, this is a run first offense. That isn't changing. Hence he's a weekly streaming option with little seasonal upside unless the defense really collapses.
Mike Tagliere
FantasyPros
You can try to make the argument that McCaffrey shouldn't go No. 1 overall this year, but you'd lose the argument. Outside of saying, "running backs don't repeat as the top option," there's nothing that should suggest McCaffrey won't. He's not just a running back. He's a wide receiver. He scored 182.5 half-PPR points through the air alone, which would've been the No. 20 wide receiver in fantasy last year, ahead of Stefon Diggs. Even if McCaffrey simply stopped playing football in Week 12, he would've finished as the No. 1 running back by a massive 22.1 PPR points. The new offense and improved quarterback play shouldn't hurt at all. There are a lot of people (myself included) who don't realize just how impressive Garoppolo's numbers have been to this point in his career. He's averaged at least 8.0 yards per attempt in every year he's started a game, including 8.4 yards per attempt in 2019. He's completed 67.5 percent of his passes, and he has a 2.10:1 touchdown to interception ratio. Despite all that, he's been a top-12 type quarterback in fantasy just 28.0 percent of the time since joining the 49ers. How is that? He plays for Kyle Shanahan and has averaged just 29.7 pass attempts per game. When you do that to a strictly pocket passer, it crushes his fantasy upside. It's unlikely that changes in 2020, especially when you consider he'll be without his No. 1 receiver for a while, as Deebo Samuel recovers from broken foot surgery. It's worth noting that two of his four QB1 performances in 2019 were against the Cardinals, the team he'll play in Week 1. Again, he'll be without Samuel, but George Kittle might go nuclear. Garoppolo is a solid quarterback in 2QB formats, even if he doesn't come with a top-12 type ceiling.
Rob Wilson
The Fantasy Footballers
The man, the myth, the fantasy legend. Bonafide RB1 and the closest thing to a can't miss fantasy pick since LT.
Frank Bonincontri
Fantasy Wire HQ
1.01 - Really hoping Teddy B does not curtail his game.Very interested to see how Jimmy G improves without Deebo, the departure of Sanders and a new look WR group for 2020. (yes I know it's all Kittle, but what about the perimeter?)
Dalton Kates
APEX Fantasy Leagues
Coming off one of the best fantasy seasons of all-time. New system in place puts into question how likely he is to get close to that number last year. Elite RB. 1.01.
Brandon Funston
The Athletic
Was just 3rd RB in past decade to reach 400 touches, helping propel him to 2nd-best PPR season by RB in NFL history
Elliot Berkovits
Packer Report
Plain and simple, Christian McCaffrey is the best player in fantasy football. He's an elite runner of the football and yet his pass-catching skills are what's most impressive. Two consecutive seasons with over 100 receptions, that's unheard of at the RB position. He's the clear cut #1 overall pick in all formats.Garoppolo may have led the 49ers to the Super Bowl but when it comes to fantasy he was nothing special. He finished 14th overall at QB with an average of 16 points per game. His No.1 WR, Deebo Samuel could miss time to start the season which only lowers Garoppolo's value. He's not worth drafting in a one QB league.
Michael Petropoulos
BRoto Fantasy
No brainer first pick. Ceiling of overall RB1 and floor of overall RB2.
Jason Petropoulos
BRoto Fantasy
The lead Saints RB in games Bridgewater started last season averaged 22 PPR PPG. CMC is going to be fine no matter who is throwing him the ball and will continue to see an unbelievable amount of work. The Panthers' already bad D has lost Luke Keuchly and now Matt Rhule, an offensive-minded coach, is taking over. Rhule's teams struggled his first season with Temple and Baylor, so if that carries over we'll see a lot of CMC garbage-time work.
Justin Dodds
Locked In Football
The 1.01 in pretty much every format. No need to debate.
Kevin Wheeler
Draftwize
McCaffrey is looking to repeat as the overall PPR RB1 for the first time since 2002-2003 Priest Holmes. McCaffrey had more yards before contact (635) than all but four ENTIRE TEAMS of running backs in 2019. McCaffrey would be a RB1 if he didn't catch a single pass, he finished 2019 with 1,387 yards rushing and 15 rushing touchdowns. When you add in 116 receptions for 1,005 yards and 4 more touchdowns, you have the overall number one RB.
