Draft Engine
Samuel failed to surpass five receptions in any game last season, and a 91-yard effort in Week 2 marked the only time he eclipsed 70 receiving yards. With Carolina signing Robby Anderson in March to a two-year, 20 million contract, it's no guarantee that Samuel remains the third option in the Panthers' passing game behind Christian McCaffrey and D.J. Moore.Exhibiting skills that are similar to those of Rams receiver Robert Woods, Jefferson is a tough receiver and savvy route runner who played a big part in Joe Burrow's breakout year at LSU. More of a complementary player than a true No. 1, Jefferson will have a chance to contribute as a rookie opposite Adam Thielen with Stefon Diggs having been dealt by Minnesota in March.
Elliot Berkovits
Packer Report
Leading up to the 2019 season, all anyone wanted to talk about was Curtis Samuel and how he would be the WR to own in Carolina. Well, that didn't exactly work out. It was D.J. Moore who stole the spotlight and now the Panthers went out and signed deep threat Robby Anderson. I like Samuel as a talent but I don't think there will be enough targets to go around to make him a reliable weekly starter.Jefferson steps directly into the WR2 role for the Vikings after the departure of Stefon Diggs this offseason. With no preseason it may take Jefferson a couple of weeks to get acclimated, but over 16 games, he should see the most targets of any rookie wideout. He's definitely someone worth targeting at the end of drafts.
Ben Wasley
The Fantasy First Down
Curtis Samuel was everyone's favorite breakout prospect last season and although he didn't reach the lofty expectations some had for him, a WR36 finish was still solid for a player with a limited skill set. With the addition of Robby Anderson, Samuel's target share is in for a major reduction and the talk he may be on the trade block is an even worse sign. While the Panthers will have to throw a lot, Samuel is at best the 4th receiver in this offense and that limits his upside.Justin Jefferson has regularly been under-estimated compared to the big three of Ruggs, Lamb and Jeudy and that's simply not an accurate representation of his ability. Now falling into a brilliant opportunity in the wide-open Minnesota back-field, Jefferson will get the perfect chance to prove himself and I believe he's the rookie you want in 2020. He's expected to play mostly out of the slot but showed in 2018 that he's very capable of bouncing outside so he should play on most downs. Adam Thielen's stats prove that the slot snaps are most valuable in Minnesota so Jefferson should be the hot ticket in town. Excitingly, he's available well into the double-digit rounds and is the perfect late-round dart throw, especially in PPR.
Mike Tagliere
FantasyPros
There are a lot of analysts making excuses for Samuel's poor production last year, stating that his quarterback play was atrocious. While I don't disagree, there are plenty of wide receivers who've had bad quarterback play but managed to be useful. Samuel's 0.96 yards per route run in 2019 ranked dead last among the 157 wide receivers with at least 100 targets over the last five years. Heck, his teammate D.J. Moore was able to finish as the WR18. Based on the targets Samuel received and where they took place, he should have finished as the WR16. Look, I'm not saying Samuel is as bad as he was in 2019, but for him to become a reliable fantasy player, he'd have to overcome the fact that he's now the fourth-best target in the offense, behind McCaffrey, Moore, and Anderson. The Panthers also tried shopping Samuel this offseason, but ultimately held onto him. He's someone to look at during bye weeks when the Panthers are double-digit underdogs. Outside of that, you're just looking for an injury to him to become anything more than a WR5-type option. In case you didn't know, Jefferson is coming off a ridiculous season with LSU where he tallied 111 receptions for 1,540 yards and 18 touchdowns over 15 games. He played the big-slot role for them, which is something the Vikings should take into consideration when figuring out how to best deploy him. Unfortunately, Jefferson wound up on the COVID list and is being forced to miss a lot of camp. Still, he's a route-running technician who's playing behind a 30-year-old receiver who's been dealing with back issues. There's an avenue where Jefferson is relied upon as a rookie more than most think, though it would likely require Thielen to be out of the lineup. Under Gary Kubiak/Kevin Stefanski last year, the wide receivers saw just 43.2 percent of the target share (4th-lowest mark in the NFL), making it very difficult for multiple options to be fantasy relevant on a week-to-week basis. Because of that, Jefferson is essentially just a wide receiver handcuff.
Kyle Yates
FantasyPros
Samuel's got the talent to be a factor for fantasy football, but it simply hasn't translated to on-the-field production. Now, Samuel has competition for targets with Robby Anderson in town and there's a chance that Samuel is fourth on this team in targets. With that being the case, Samuel's unlikely to return consistent fantasy production this season.Justin Jefferson landed in a beautiful spot for fantasy football, as he steps in alongside Adam Thielen and will assume the Stefon Diggs role. Thielen and Jefferson are the only true players there that should command targets and we know that Thielen has started to deal with some injuries the past couple of years. Jefferson should easily see over 100 targets in year one and may bring even more upside if something were to happen to Adam Thielen.
Seth Miller
Crossroads Fantasy Football
If I told you this WR had 108/1236/11 would you be interested? Now what if I told you that was in 3 years? Has trended upwards for 3 years in a row. Deep targets were infamously inaccurate last year. That made him rather terrible for fantasy football. He was miscast, running a 9 route over 1/4 of the time That situation has now been rectified with the addition of Robby Anderson. I think Samuel's chances at fading into a WR3 forever are just as likely as some kind of breakout. Most players don't have a Devante Parker like resurgence after years of being mediocre. They turn into Phillip Dorsett, an 83rd percentile sparq-x athlete who had greater college production and breakout age than Samuel, while also being a 4.3 guy we just can't let go of. However, I went back to watch all his deep incomplete passes myself for 2019. The majority were inaccurate. Sometimes the QB had to release the ball early because of the rush. Others, Samuel was out positioned, or not big enough to go up and get it. He also some just flat drops, but all of those happening were in the minority of what was happening on his deep looks. Fighting for targets underneath with DJ Moore will be no easier than trying to catch deep passes from Kyle Allen, but he'll at least have more accurate balls coming from Teddy Bridgewater, while having great, to elite numbers against man coverage 2 years in a row to give himself a great opportunity in this new offense.2019 Slot % Diggs - 14.7 Thielen - 29.3 Bisi - 34 Beebe - 52.5 (barely played) Justin Jefferson is going to be a WR2 right out of the gate. His biggest obstacle? Not Adam Thielen, but passing volume. No one had over 100 targets and Cook was 2nd on the team with 63. Injuries played a part in this but the Vikings went from 606 ATT in 2018, fired Defilippo, 466 ATT in 2019. The slot roll was basically a committee in 2019, Jefferson should consolidate that in 2020

After Cam Newton was injured, Panthers WRs saw a catchable deep ball on only 25% of targets (14/56), via PFF. During Teddy Bridgewater's five starts, Saints WRs saw catchable deep balls on 62% of targets (8/13). @pat_thorman
