Lineups
The Dolphins had the worst rushing offense in the NFL last season and wasted no time in addressing the issue as they brought in Howard and Matt Breida. I expect both players to be involved and I have them two spots away from each other in my 1/2-point PPR rankings. Howard is more of a plodder and he won't catch the ball very much, but he'll presumably get the bulk of the red zone work. The upside isn't really there, but Howard is a nice insurance piece if you're worried about your early-round running backs.Detroit has had minimal success running the football recently and their rushing offense has been below-average for the past two decades after Barry Sanders retired. Over the past five years, the Lions have spent 2nd-round picks on Ameer Abdullah and Kerryon Johnson, neither of whom panned out. The team will be hoping Swift proves that the third time really is the charm and long-term his talent gives him tremendous potential. This season, though, with Adrian Peterson and Kerryon Johnson both on the roster, I'm not sure if Swift will ever get enough work to be a startable fantasy asset. He certainly has upside if things break his way, though.
Kyle Yates
FantasyPros
Howard will get the opportunity to be a starting RB again in 2020 in Miami. He's the clear option for goal line carries and this offensive line is drastically improved from 2019. Howard should be a solid RB2 option all season long in this offense.Swift now receives a significant downgrade after the signing of Adrian Peterson. This is going to be a full-on committee backfield and Swift is dealing with his own potential injury issues right now. This may just be a backfield that you look to avoid for fantasy football this season unless we see one of these other options miss time.
Dan Harris
FantasyPros
Howard is perpetually undervalued in fantasy football, in part because of his lack of success as a receiver. But over his four-year career, he's totaled 3,895 yards rushing, 30 touchdowns, and a 4.3 YPC average. Those numbers are more than adequate for fantasy purposes, especially considering Howard should get the bulk of the work for the Dolphins. While Matt Breida should siphon off some carries, Howard will likely be the primary ball carrier and the goal-line option, making him a Flex option in standard leagues. The draft capital the Lions spent on Swift suggested that he'd take the lion's share of the running back touches in Detroit even with the presence of Adrian Peterson. But Swift has battled injury and missed two weeks of practice heading into the season, and word is that the Detroit coaching staff preferred a committee approach to the backfield. With the Lions now signing Adrian Peterson, it's hard to see Swift getting a big workload early on even if he is healthy. He'll likely eventually be the back you want to roster in Detroit and should certainly be drafted as a low-end Flex play, but be prepared to ride with other options for the first several weeks of the season.
Mike Tagliere
FantasyPros
It seems like years since Howard has been a force to reckon with in fantasy football, but prior to the 2019 season that was ended with injuries, he'd posted 935 or more rushing yards in each of the previous three seasons. The issue with projecting that moving forward is due to his offensive line play. The Dolphins have what may be the worst line in football, while Howard has only run behind top-10 offensive lines while in Chicago and Philadelphia. Still, if you need a running back who's likely locked into 12-plus touches a week, Howard can fill a role on your fantasy team. Some were automatically assuming that Swift will get 20 touches per game in the Lions offense, though I wasn't a part of that group. Kerryon Johnson has been solid for the Lions when on the field, though he's had issues staying on the field, and the Lions continually bring guys like LeGarrette Blount, C.J. Anderson, and Bo Scarbrough into the fold. This time, it's Adrian Peterson. So, they'll likely work both running backs to keep them healthy and fresh. I do believe Swift is the best back, hence the higher ranking, but expecting more than 12-14 touches per game out of the gate would be a mistake.
Draft Engine
Draft Engine
Howard is expected to enter the season as Miami's lead back - while his game has limitations, he's arguably as effective an inside-zone runner as there is in the NFL. There's a chance that he'll be utilized more as a receiver than he was in Philadelphia.Swift comes into the NFL as a polished product. His workload was kept in check due to the depth in Georgia's backfield, and there's a question of what kind of workload he can ultimately handle for the Lions - he never had 200 carries in a single season.
Wolf of Roto Street
Roto Street Journal
Strong landing spot in MIA, especially with the line beefed up in the draft. Breida was a nice "lightning" complement added to Howard's "thunder," but he's in line for 250+ touches in an offense that could sneaky light it up if Chan Gailey still has it (and if Tua is the real deal).Returns to practice... only to get hurt again. Guy can't string together consecutive days. Highly concerned for his immediate outlook in Redraft
Kevin Wheeler
Draftwize
Expect Howard to be the top choice for the Dolphins' goal line work this season.Lions RB D'Andre Swift's leg injury "could cost him snaps" to start the season. "I think missing time in general, with rookies, is a concern," coach Matt Patricia said. "We're going to have to do a good job of making sure he's acclimated when he is ready to go. Kind of work him in that way until we build up a little background for him where he knows maybe what he's going to see." @Rotoworld
Ben Wasley
The Fantasy First Down
After being drafted out of Indiana in the 5th round a few years ago, Jordan Howard has regularly surpassed expectations. He was sensational for the Bears in his debut season before dropping away along with the team's attack as a whole. A move to Philly proved he still had it as he held off Miles Sanders with superior play until injury crueled his season. Now in Miami's RB-wasteland and he's got a chance to do it all again. The message is clear, under-estimate Howard at your peril. With around 400 RB touches to go around, I expect Howard to lead the backfield with Breida taking the change-of-pace/receiving role. Take Howard in the late 8th round if you need a safe option but realize the upside is limited this time. What a mess the Lions backfield was in 2019; Kerryon Johnson, Bo Scarborough, Ty Johnson, JD McKissic, CJ Anderson, Paul Perkins, Tra Carson and Wes Hills all started a game with Hills oddly the overall RB9 in PPG bizarrely. Into this nightmare walks D'Andre Swift. The shining light at the end of the tunnel is that the run offense was actually pretty good at times and if Swift is able to earn enough volume, he's got RB1 upside. Sadly, that's unlikely to occur as it projects as the committee approach Matt Patricia seems to favour and that limits Swift's upside significantly. If things break right he may provide big value later in the season but it'll start off very messy so be warned.

Big time sleeper in the middle rounds if Detroit commits to him. Patricia is a Patriot product, so multiple backs is the more likely scenario.

Great producer when given the ball throughout his career. Likely lead guy in the committee with Breida, but offers limited upside due to lack of receiving work.Workhorse RB prospect with strong draft capital. Profiles as a top RB in the game in a few seasons. Lions were a top offense when Stafford was healthy last year. If he can beat out Kerryon for lead work there is tons of upside here.

After one season with the Eagles, Howard now finds himself in Miami in what could be a resurgent offense under Tua Tagovailoa. He will split carries with Matt Breida but I expect Howard to get the majority of the goal-line work. He's a much better option in non-PPR.Swift is one of the most electrifying players coming out of the 2020 draft class. His only roadblock is the fact that he ended up on the Lions. The Lions offense has been notoriously bad for RBs for years and he'll have to compete with Kerryon Johnson for touches. That being said, Johnson hasn't been able to stay healthy and if anything were to happen to him, Swift would skyrocket in everyone's rankings.

Howard should be the lead back in a crowded RBBC in Miami this year, which would give him flex value with upside if they can improve the offensive line.Swift should start the season as the Lions top running back and the Lions did have the 11th ranked offensive line by Pro Football Focus last year. Swift has a chance to be a flex RB with RB2 upside.

I learned my lesson last year! Howard will be more involved than I like! Still likely to receive 150ish carries with a rookie drafted, whether we like it or not. Was pacing for 190 in Philly last year. The good news is he's an absolute dunce when it comes to pass catching and Miami targeted the RB a sneaky amount(99). It was just spread out through Drake, who left, and the Walton and LA(i)RDS of the world 150 attempts at a 4ypc clip with a handful of TDs would put him at 90 fantasy points.
