Lineups
Detroit has had minimal success running the football recently and their rushing offense has been below-average for the past two decades after Barry Sanders retired. Over the past five years, the Lions have spent 2nd-round picks on Ameer Abdullah and Kerryon Johnson, neither of whom panned out. The team will be hoping Swift proves that the third time really is the charm and long-term his talent gives him tremendous potential. This season, though, with Adrian Peterson and Kerryon Johnson both on the roster, I'm not sure if Swift will ever get enough work to be a startable fantasy asset. He certainly has upside if things break his way, though.Tarik Cohen has carved out a role that provides significant PPR fantasy value as one of the lead pass catchers in Matt Nagy's offense. Cohen has caught 203 passes over the past three seasons and can be a dynamic player with the ball in his hands, but I believe it's likely the team's preference to help David Montgomery develop into a complete three-down back. The Bears' defense should be better than last year, which would lead to less pass attempts overall. I'm not thrilled about Cohen this year but he's a fine depth pick late in drafts.
Kyle Yates
FantasyPros
Swift now receives a significant downgrade after the signing of Adrian Peterson. This is going to be a full-on committee backfield and Swift is dealing with his own potential injury issues right now. This may just be a backfield that you look to avoid for fantasy football this season unless we see one of these other options miss time.Cohen struggled last season, along with the rest of the Chicago Bears offense. If Nick Foles is the starting QB, this offense is going to stay on schedule and Cohen should see a dramatic increase in efficiency. There's a very real chance that Cohen bounces back into the RB2 conversation this season.
Dan Harris
FantasyPros
The draft capital the Lions spent on Swift suggested that he'd take the lion's share of the running back touches in Detroit even with the presence of Adrian Peterson. But Swift has battled injury and missed two weeks of practice heading into the season, and word is that the Detroit coaching staff preferred a committee approach to the backfield. With the Lions now signing Adrian Peterson, it's hard to see Swift getting a big workload early on even if he is healthy. He'll likely eventually be the back you want to roster in Detroit and should certainly be drafted as a low-end Flex play, but be prepared to ride with other options for the first several weeks of the season.Cohen had a down year last season (like most others in the Chicago offense), but it was largely just his lack of big plays. He's a lock for at least 70 catches, which makes him someone you can start as a Flex play in half- and full-PPR leagues. He's not going to cut into David Montgomery's carries very much, but with Montgomery potentially missing the first game or two with a groin injury, Cohen could get additional work early. Either way, as he often does, he's likely to outperform his average draft position.
Mike Tagliere
FantasyPros
Some were automatically assuming that Swift will get 20 touches per game in the Lions offense, though I wasn't a part of that group. Kerryon Johnson has been solid for the Lions when on the field, though he's had issues staying on the field, and the Lions continually bring guys like LeGarrette Blount, C.J. Anderson, and Bo Scarbrough into the fold. This time, it's Adrian Peterson. So, they'll likely work both running backs to keep them healthy and fresh. I do believe Swift is the best back, hence the higher ranking, but expecting more than 12-14 touches per game out of the gate would be a mistake. We knew big play regression was coming for Cohen in 2019, though it hit him more than anyone thought possible. Did you know that Cohen posted RB1-type numbers in 31.3 percent of his games in 2018? That ranked 12th among running backs. His lack of big plays crushed his hopes in 2019, as he went down to just 6.3 percent. Still, his floor stayed intact, highlighting he's still the same player. There's an in-between 2018 and 2019 outcome that's likely in 2020. He's never going to be a workhorse running back, but he's going to beat his current ADP.
Draft Engine
Draft Engine
Swift comes into the NFL as a polished product. His workload was kept in check due to the depth in Georgia's backfield, and there's a question of what kind of workload he can ultimately handle for the Lions - he never had 200 carries in a single season.

Returns to practice... only to get hurt again. Guy can't string together consecutive days. Highly concerned for his immediate outlook in Redraft

Lions RB D'Andre Swift's leg injury "could cost him snaps" to start the season. "I think missing time in general, with rookies, is a concern," coach Matt Patricia said. "We're going to have to do a good job of making sure he's acclimated when he is ready to go. Kind of work him in that way until we build up a little background for him where he knows maybe what he's going to see." @Rotoworld
John Hesterman
Dynasty League Football
Cohen represents a low cost, high upside pick in this season's drafts. His target volume should remain consistently high making him an ideal later round target, especially in PPR formats.
Ben Wasley
The Fantasy First Down
What a mess the Lions backfield was in 2019; Kerryon Johnson, Bo Scarborough, Ty Johnson, JD McKissic, CJ Anderson, Paul Perkins, Tra Carson and Wes Hills all started a game with Hills oddly the overall RB9 in PPG bizarrely. Into this nightmare walks D'Andre Swift. The shining light at the end of the tunnel is that the run offense was actually pretty good at times and if Swift is able to earn enough volume, he's got RB1 upside. Sadly, that's unlikely to occur as it projects as the committee approach Matt Patricia seems to favour and that limits Swift's upside significantly. If things break right he may provide big value later in the season but it'll start off very messy so be warned.Tarik Cohen was awful in 2019, averaging 4.4 yards per target as the Bears offense capitulated. For reference, most pass-catching backs average 6 or higher and the worst I could find was Royce Freeman's 5.1 last year. That's how bad Cohen was. Let's be clear though, Cohen is not a bad player. With Nick Foles now distributing the rock it's very possible Cohen rises back to PPR stardom as a weekly RB2 with flex usage in half-ppr. I'll personally have very few shares as Cohen has zero true upside but if you need a safe weekly PPR starter, here's your man.

Big time sleeper in the middle rounds if Detroit commits to him. Patricia is a Patriot product, so multiple backs is the more likely scenario.

Workhorse RB prospect with strong draft capital. Profiles as a top RB in the game in a few seasons. Lions were a top offense when Stafford was healthy last year. If he can beat out Kerryon for lead work there is tons of upside here. Was 2nd on the Bears in targets last year and had over 100 targets. Was inefficient with those targets, but with no upgrades at RB or WR over the offseason he is likely going to stay in his role and naturally be more efficient this year. Good value.

Swift is one of the most electrifying players coming out of the 2020 draft class. His only roadblock is the fact that he ended up on the Lions. The Lions offense has been notoriously bad for RBs for years and he'll have to compete with Kerryon Johnson for touches. That being said, Johnson hasn't been able to stay healthy and if anything were to happen to him, Swift would skyrocket in everyone's rankings.Cohen enters 2020 as one half the Bears backfield duo. As usual, Cohen's value will come primarily from the passing game with the Bears QB situation in limbo that could make things difficult for Cohen. He's a low-end flex play in full PPR formats.

Swift should start the season as the Lions top running back and the Lions did have the 11th ranked offensive line by Pro Football Focus last year. Swift has a chance to be a flex RB with RB2 upside.
