Lineups
Throughout Mike Tomlin's long tenure as a head coach, he's always preferred to use a workhorse back over an RBBC. Even when Fitzgerald Toussaint and DeAngelo Williams were filling in for Le'Veon Bell a few years back, they could expect a full workload. Conner's talent has never been the question - he's a solid if unspectacular player who can certainly take advantage of the great situation in Pittsburgh. The problem for Conner is his inability to stay on the field, and while he should be very good when healthy, he's one of the bigger injury risks at his position. The forgotten piece of the DeAndre Hopkins trade saga is David Johnson, a running back who's going to be heavily utilized in Houston. He'll benefit from playing with Deshaun Watson, especially since this team has among the most vacated targets in the NFL. DJ will be used on the ground and through the air and will likely turn in a surprisingly productive, high-end RB2 season.
Mike Tagliere
FantasyPros
If Conner were able to stay on the field, he'd be considered as a top-10 running back in fantasy. Unfortunately, he hasn't done that, and it's led them to draft Jaylen Samuels, Benny Snell, and now Anthony McFarland. While none of them are better than Conner, it's likely we see them take some of the workload away from him in 2020.The Texans gave their running backs 397 touches last year, and that was with DeAndre Hopkins on the roster. That's a lot of work. The only running back they've added was David Johnson. While Johnson looked horrendous down the stretch, it's possible he just tried to work his way back from injury way too soon. It appears Bill O'Brien isn't convinced that Johnson is done with his NFL career, like some. It's possible that he's not as electric as he once was, but guys, the Texans gave Carlos Hyde 255 touches last year. Opportunity is key in fantasy football, and Johnson appears to be in line for a lot of it in 2020, making him a low-end RB2 with upside for more should he actually be healthy.
Draft Engine
Draft Engine
With Le'Veon Bell sitting out all of '18, Conner made the Pro Bowl after racking up nearly 1,500 yards from scrimmage despite missing three December games with an ankle injury. Injuries in 2019 limited him to 99 total yards over three games after October.Acquired in a deal that sent DeAndre Hopkins to Arizona, Johnson has averaged 3.6 yards per carry over 30 games the past three seasons. Don't expect him to reach 50 catches with Duke Johnson having caught 30 passes over the second half of last season.
Ben Wasley
The Fantasy First Down
What an awful season 2019 proved to be for those who drafted James Conner in the first round of drafts. Big Ben was injured, the offense fell apart, Conner's body fell apart and other backs like Benny Snell, Jaylen Samuels and even Kerrith Whyte (who oddly didn't look too bad) swarmed in. With Ben back, Conner ripped like a flying squirrel and another RB in 4th rounder Anthony McFarland in the mix, 2020 has turned into a real crap shoot. With a 4th round price tag though, Conner might just be worth the risk as an upside gamble returning to a good offense where he should be the lead back.Bill O'Brien has a long history of leaning on (often mediocre) running backs for 220-270 carries. Arian Foster, Alfred Blue, Lamar Miller and Carlos Hyde all became somewhat fantasy relevant in this offense and David Johnson is next on the list. The real question is how he fits in the passing game and that will make all the difference. The other D. Johnson, Duke, will certainly be a hindrance but we've seen DJ prove impossible to take off the field when things go right and it's just possible he explodes for a big season. I don't love the odds of that but even though this is very must Deshaun Watson's offense, I do think David Johnson has a very solid floor and provides a nice safe pick with solid upside.
Rob Wilson
The Fantasy Footballers
The leading man in the Steel city, and the forgotten man who was a top ten pick last season. Perfect RB2 pickJohnson has lost a step, but O'Brien fed Lamar Miller. Boring albeit safe RB2 selection.

He's an RB1 when healthy, but that's the concern. Still, I'd be OK with him as my #2 RB with that potential.

Conner will have to stay effective, healthy and productive to fend off the field in Pittsburgh.

Conner enters a team which should see massive positive regression back towards one of the best offenses in the league. Was a true workhorse last time he was on the field, but draft pick McFarland along with Snell could keep this a committee. Conner has proven to do well in the NFL even though his athletic profile doesn't necessarily give him the upside we are looking for.Hasn't been good as a runner since his breakout campaign in 2016. Has still been efficient as a receiver and that's likely where he will thrive. Will be 29 this season which is well past the peak age for RBs. Duke Johnson has been great and efficient will be behind him if David falters and underperforms this year. r

7th among RBs in FAN PPG over past 2 seasons (better than Cook, Henry, Mixon, to name a few), but in a prove-it season health wise - figure he's playing for his future in PITIf his health holds, his share of the HOU backfield workload should be major, but his potential in the passing game far outweighs his ground game at this point in career

Many people consider 2019 to be a bad season for Conner but before getting hurt, he was averaging over 14 points per game. Now, Ben Roethlisberger is slated to return and the Steelers offense of old could be coming back together. Getting a piece of that in the 3rd-4th round is terrific value. After a horrid finish to the 2019 season, many fantasy players seem to be avoiding David Johnson. What people are forgetting is that prior to his injury last year, Johnson was the 6th highest scoring RB with an average of over 17 points per game. Now he joins another high-flying offense in Houston and should be in a great spot to outperform his current ADP.

If Conner stays healthy this year, he's almost certainly going to be a draft-day bargain. Through Week 7, before his season was derailed by injury, he was on pace for more than 1400 total yards and 14 touchdowns. Mike Tomlin has come out and essentially stated that Conner is going to be a workhorse back, and he may get even more work in the receiving game if Ben Roethlisberger doesn't push it downfield as much as he used to after elbow surgery. In other words, it's just health with Conner. If he has it, he should be no worse than an extremely strong RB2 in half- or full-PPR leagues.

I am COMPLETELY off of DJ this season. He has been a below average or injured back every year since 2016. I repeat, 2016. If you want to bet on a running back renaissance after three years of mediocrity, so be it, I will not be taking that bet.

People are quick to write Conner off, but injuries are the only difference from this season to last where he was being drafted as a first-round pick. In fact, Big-Ben is back, so Conner should have more running lanes than he did last season when he excelled. From weeks 1-8 last season, Conner saw almost 18 touches per game, was sixth among RBs in fantasy points per snap, and forced the second-most missed tackles on receptions. He's also played at least 10 games every year of his career and is an RB1 whenever he's on the field. He's easily worth the third round pick.

Conner went from 1,470 yards from scrimmage and 13 touchdowns in 2018 to 715 yards from scrimmage and 7 touchdowns in 2019. The big issue for me is durability, Conner has RB1 talent, but missed 3 games in 2018 and 6 games last year. He has a lot of upside due to his ability, but a lot of downside due to his durability.I do not think we will ever see 2016 David Johnson again. He joins a new team this year and he is now the lead back in the Texans offense and that should be an upgrade from RB Carlos Hyde. If he can stay healthy, Johnson should be a RB2 with some upside.

Conner's a dicey pick, but that seems to be built into his ADP right now. If everything goes his way this season, Conner will drastically outperform where he's being drafted right now. However, we just simply don't know at this point whether or not he's going to remain healthy for all 16 games. In fact, I might bet against that happening.Johnson's now joining the Houston Texans and there is a huge workload waiting for him. If he can stay healthy, Johnson should easily return value this season. However, the last time that we saw Johnson, he looked like a shell of his former self. Additionally, Johnson's true fantasy value has come through his contributions in the receiving game. In Houston, with Duke Johnson also on this roster, it's difficult to see David Johnson seeing significant volume. If you draft David Johnson this year, you're betting on him staying fully healthy and him seeing a ton of work in the receiving game. Otherwise, he may go down as a wasted pick when it's all said and done.

Will be taking advantage of his 1 highly publicized run while injured in 2019, of him trying to run around the corner at the speed of your grandpa while injured. Expecting amazing health? Not necessarily, but we've seen what a 1 dimensional, rather bland back can do with the reigns, in Carlos Hyde, in 2019. I'll gladly scoop Johnson as my RB3

Talented grinder, great scheme, and somehow avoided any major competition this offseason despite making it through a grand total of 2 games in 2019. While I have 0 faith in his ability to stay healthy, Conner has all the makings of a major RB1 for however long he lasts. The Texans have a glaring backfield need. Will DJ get himself in tip-top shape to shine here?
