FantasyPros
Johnson was the victim of having a bad coaching staff and supporting cast, hopefully their offensive system will help utilize his special talents. He is a low-end RB1 that should benefit playing with rookie QB Kyler Murray in a fast paced offense.Bell should see a ton of carries, but he no longer has Big Ben, Antonio Brown or one of the best offensive lines in the NFL to help his fantasy value. He is a high-end RB2 that is going to see a lot of touches, but not the efficiency he has had in past years.
Mike Tagliere
FantasyPros
Now that Steve Wilks is out of town, maybe we'll get back to the normally scheduled programming with Johnson. The air-raid offense that new coach Kliff Kingsbury figures to bring to the Cardinals should give Johnson a lot more work in the passing game. While at Texas Tech, Kingsbury passed the ball on 65 percent of their plays. By comparison, there were just two teams in the NFL who hit that number in 2018. With Kyler Murray presenting elusiveness, it should only help create lanes for Johnson even if his offensive line is still weakHe's back, but this time it's probably going to be a lot less exciting. He'll be playing behind a much lesser offensive line, with a much lesser quarterback, in a much worse offense. He's going to get plenty of touches, but we can say that about a lot of running backs. The question is - what's his upside in a low-scoring offense? Adam Gase's offenses have been lacking in both overall plays and overall scoring. Did you know that Dolphins running backs scored 10 rushing touchdowns over the last two years... combined? Bell is a relatively safe pick due to the touches he'll get, but he lacks the upside you want out of a high first-round pick
Brandon Funston
The Athletic
Air Raid system of new HC Kingsbury leans heavily to the pass and history of RBs under him is concerning for DJ, but Kingsbury will likely have to conform a bit to NFL and to his team's most dangerous weaponThe Jets, by most metrics and observational analysis, were among worst run blocking O-lines in '18, so Bell will be facing a headwind that he rarely endured in PIT - but sheer volume, elite, versatile talent should help him return Rd 1 value
Kevin Roberts
Breaking Football
DJ has insane upside as one of the most explosive and versatile backs in the NFL. The question is, was last year who he is now and will a new system help or hurt him? He's a 1st rounder, but he comes with risk.Bell has been a stud throughout his career, so why would he stop now? I actually like him plenty this year, but an entire year off and playing in a new system behind an inferior o-line...those could be problems.
Kevin Wheeler
Draftwize
Kingsbury himself said Johnson will see an "extensive" role that could involve as many as 35 carries or 10 catches in a given game, which could return DJ to his fantasy glory days of 2016. Last season, he got a touch on 34% of plays, but the Cardinals ranked 31st in plays per game with only 56.4. In 2016, Johnson touched the ball at the same rate for a squad that ranked second with 67.9 plays per game, and the result was a league-leading 373 touches and the best fantasy running back season of the past half-decade. @ChrisRaybon
Dan Harris
FantasyPros
The Cardinals offense was a disaster last season, and although Johnson saw plenty of work and put up enough fantasy points to be relevant, his production from recent years went down significantly. But all of that should be just a bad memory now, with the addition of Kliff Kingsbury and Kyler Murray. Kingsbury's system doesn't focus all that much on passes to running backs, but given Johnson's talent level, he should make up for it elsewhere. Expect an elite season, albeit perhaps one that falls short of his 2016 level.Despite sitting out a year and moving to a new team, Bell should once again be an RB-1 for fantasy purposes. Yes, there are plenty of red flags. Adam Gase's teams are notorious for running few plays, the Jets have offensive line issues, and the Dolphins never let their most talented running back, Kenyan Drake, have enough work. But Bell's certain involvement in the passing game gives him an incredibly high floor, and he should most likely give you quality fantasy production week-in and week-out. Don't expect him to put up the numbers that he did with the Steelers. But he won't have to in order to earn his draft price.
Michael Petropoulos
BRoto Fantasy
This is Bell's backfield and will be fed early and often. Gase also likes to move RBs to the outside now and then, which plays right into Bell's strengths.
Bobby Sylvester
FantasyPros
Now that Melvin Gordon is claiming he will hold out, Johnson is the clear RB5 and will most likely be the 5th pick off the board in most drafts ahead of Hopkins. He was not as good last year, in part because of the offensive line but primarily because the Cardinals ran so few plays. That should change this year under Kingsbury so don't hesitate because of his numbers last season.Bell was as great of a fantasy asset as we've seen the prior five years before his holdout last season. With that said, he is moving from one of the best offensive lines and running schemes to the absolute worst of both. He will still see 300+ touches, of course, but without the Steelers offensive line, fantasy owners will likely be shocked at how inefficient Bell will be.
Kyle Yates
The Fantasy Footballers
David Johnson fell into fantasy football hell last season with Mike McCoy as the OC in Arizona. Now, Kliff Kingsbury is in town with Kyler Murray and DJ is going to be leaned on heavily in this offense. The running lanes should be there with defenses regularly on their heels and DJ is going to soak up targets in this pass heavy offense. It simply comes down a question of Touchdowns...is this offense going to be explosive enough in year one with a rookie QB that David Johnson will get the scoring opportunities needed to be a top-tier RB? If you believe the answer is yes, then you should be all in on DJ at his ADP.Bell now switches to the AFC East with the New York Jets and new Head Coach, Adam Gase. Gase has a tendency to run a RBBC, but has admittedly never had a talent like Bell before. This situation is murky and has me concerned. We may look back at Bell's numbers next offseason and say he performed well, but it didn't necessarily lead to consistent production week in and week out. Bell's risk is built into his ADP though and I would feel comfortable with him as my team's RB2.
Nick Zylak
Fantasy Football Advice
I have a higher ranking and projection on DJ than most people do. My argument is simple, last season was the absolute worst case scenerio for DJ. His team struggled to score TD's, his QB played terrible, and his offensive coordinator was pathetic at play calling. Despite all of this...he was able to finish as the RB 10 in half PPR leagues. This season the offense should take a complete 180. They have a new head coach in Kliff Kingsbury that wants to lead the league in plays run, and they have the first overall pick in Kyler Murray, who's a massive upgrade from Josh Rosen. In 2018 the Cardinals were dead last with just 14.1 points per game, and they ran the second fewest plays per game. At the very least, they are going to improve apon thos numbers...and that's great news for DJ. I cannot stress enough how massive of a boost it would be going from just 56 plays per game, up to 70 per game. Not to mention the fact that they might actually be in the red zone for a few of those plays. Draft DJ with confidence.Bell sat out the entire 2018 season, then changed teams. That adds a bit more risk than we are used to with Le'Veon. The once consensus top 5 pick now comes with a second round ADP. I preach avoiding risk in the early rounds of the draft, which makes me hesitant in drafting Bell. Not only has he been away from football for a year, but he leaves a top 5 offense to join a team that ranked 23 in points per game and 26th in plays per game. While I do expect this offense to take a step forward this season, it's still a downgrade for fantasy. His 2nd round ADP comes with massive upside...but there are also a lot of unknowns. My current projection has his value as a late second round pick, which is probably where I'd feel comfortable taking him.
