Mike Tagliere
FantasyPros
The Texans gave their running backs 397 touches last year, and that was with DeAndre Hopkins on the roster. That's a lot of work. The only running back they've added was David Johnson. While Johnson looked horrendous down the stretch, it's possible he just tried to work his way back from injury way too soon. It appears Bill O'Brien isn't convinced that Johnson is done with his NFL career, like some. It's possible that he's not as electric as he once was, but guys, the Texans gave Carlos Hyde (who's still unemployed) 255 touches last year. Opportunity is key in fantasy football, and Johnson appears to be in line for a lot of it in 2020, making him a low-end RB2 with upside for more should he actually be healthy. You're going to see Bell fall down draft boards this year, and further than he should. That's odd for me to say, as Bell was someone I was avoiding like the plague in drafts. The difference? Expectations. Playing him as your first-round pick in your RB1 slot was never something anyone should've expected, especially behind that offensive line and in Gase's offense. While he's still stuck in Gase's offense, the offensive line was upgraded quite a bit this offseason, which should allow Bell more room to work. Even if he repeated his 2019 performance, that's RB2 production. There were just 11 running backs who produced RB2 or better numbers more often than him. Sure, he didn't have a ton of weekly upside, but he was safe. Now coming off the board outside the top three rounds, Bell is a value play.
Brandon Funston
The Athletic
If his health holds, his share of the HOU backfield workload should be major, but his potential in the passing game far outweighs his ground game at this point in careerVolume remains elite, but it's going to take a leap of faith that improvements to the NYJ O-line and Bell's conditioning will catapult him back into the RB1 class
Elliot Berkovits
Pack to the Future
After a horrid finish to the 2019 season, many fantasy players seem to be avoiding David Johnson. What people are forgetting is that prior to his injury last year, Johnson was the 6th highest scoring RB with an average of over 17 points per game. Now he joins another high-flying offense in Houston and should be in a great spot to outperform his current ADP.After a disappointing 2019 season, Bell is in need of a major bounce-back season which could be difficult considering he's playing on the Jets offense. I don't see Bell getting too many opportunities near the goal which means he'll have to rely heavily on his receiving numbers to be worthy of his ADP.
Michael Petropoulos
BRoto Fantasy
I am COMPLETELY off of DJ this season. He has been a below average or injured back every year since 2016. I repeat, 2016. If you want to bet on a running back renaissance after three years of mediocrity, so be it, I will not be taking that bet.
Derek Lofland
FantasyPros
I do not think we will ever see 2016 David Johnson again. He joins a new team this year and he is now the lead back in the Texans offense and that should be an upgrade from RB Carlos Hyde. If he can stay healthy, Johnson should be a RB2 with some upside.Bell should benefit from the Jets adding T Mekhi Becton and WR Denzel Mims in the NFL Draft. They also added RB La'Mical Perine in the 4th round and RB Frank Gore in free agency, but neither should not be a huge threat to Bell's touches this season.
Kyle Yates
FantasyPros
Johnson's now joining the Houston Texans and there is a huge workload waiting for him. If he can stay healthy, Johnson should easily return value this season. However, the last time that we saw Johnson, he looked like a shell of his former self. Additionally, Johnson's true fantasy value has come through his contributions in the receiving game. In Houston, with Duke Johnson also on this roster, it's difficult to see David Johnson seeing significant volume. If you draft David Johnson this year, you're betting on him staying fully healthy and him seeing a ton of work in the receiving game. Otherwise, he may go down as a wasted pick when it's all said and done.Adam Gase seems intent on taking the ball out of Bell's hands and splitting the work among his other running backs. Frank Gore and Lamical Perine are both going to eat into Bell's touches and it's going to limit his production. Bell is nothing more than a low-end RB2 in this Jets offense, despite being one of the more talented running backs in the NFL.
Seth Miller
Crossroads Fantasy Football
Will be taking advantage of his 1 highly publicized run while injured in 2019, of him trying to run around the corner at the speed of your grandpa while injured. Expecting amazing health? Not necessarily, but we've seen what a 1 dimensional, rather bland back can do with the reigns, in Carlos Hyde, in 2019. I'll gladly scoop Johnson as my RB3Kind of betting on him to not have a more productive year, because RBs typically don't as they age. This is standard RB decline, despite whatever excuses he has. Gase also seems to be pretty good at ruining fantasy value. HOPEFULLY his line play is better but we don't know that until we see it. Yes, they replaced everyone, but I feel like we get in off-season mode where we just assume everything and everyone will be better without any evidence of it. Volume should keep him afloat.
Kevin Wheeler
Draftwize
Last year there were only 3 RBs to have 240+ rushing attempts and 75+ targets. I think we would be expecting some "positive" regression for Bell, especially in the TD department, but it seems that Gase is a subscriber to the "RB's don't matter" philosophy. I expect Gore, Perine or one of the journeymen the Jets have horded to cut into Bell's upside.
Ben Wasley
The Fantasy First Down
Bill O'Brien has a long history of leaning on (often mediocre) running backs for 220-270 carries. Arian Foster, Alfred Blue, Lamar Miller and Carlos Hyde all became somewhat fantasy relevant in this offence and David Johnson is next on the list. The real question is how he fits in the passing game and that will make all the difference. The other D. Johnson, Duke, will certainly be a hindrance but we've seen DJ prove impossible to take off the field when things go right and it's just possible he explodes for a big season. I don't love the odds of that but even though this is very must Deshaun Watson's offence, I do think David Johnson has a very solid floor and provides a nice safe pick with solid upside.Le'Veon Bell once again proved that situation often trumps talent for running backs, as a mediocre O-line and Adam Gase led to a Derrick Henry level of volume (10 fewer touches) for 100 fewer fantasy points. Bell has massive room for improvement though, as he has no true competition (sorry La'Mical) and huge regression upside. Bell's never been a high TD guy or overly efficient but 4 yards per carry and 8 total TDs isn't an unreasonal expectation and that would mean a top 10 finish. Bump those up a little and he becomes a league winner. He's a great third round gamble you can pair with any of the riskier RBs like Fournette, Drake, Carson, CEH and Sanders.
