Mike Tagliere
FantasyPros
He left the Chargers at the right time, as they're going to be going through a transitional period. Instead, he joins a now-exciting Broncos offense that suddenly has tons of firepower. You don't add Gordon in free agency if you don't plan on using him as your lead back. The potential upside is that new offensive coordinator Pat Shurmur has been a one-back kind of guy, so it's possible that Phillip Lindsay is just there to give Gordon breathers when he needs them. With Courtland Sutton, Jerry Jeudy, KJ Hamler, and Noah Fant out there are receiving threats, Gordon should see a lot of light fronts this year. He's a middling RB2 with RB1 upside if they decide to give him 15-plus touches per game. The Texans gave their running backs 397 touches last year, and that was with DeAndre Hopkins on the roster. That's a lot of work. The only running back they've added was David Johnson. While Johnson looked horrendous down the stretch, it's possible he just tried to work his way back from injury way too soon. It appears Bill O'Brien isn't convinced that Johnson is done with his NFL career, like some. It's possible that he's not as electric as he once was, but guys, the Texans gave Carlos Hyde (who's still unemployed) 255 touches last year. Opportunity is key in fantasy football, and Johnson appears to be in line for a lot of it in 2020, making him a low-end RB2 with upside for more should he actually be healthy.
Brandon Funston
The Athletic
Your ranking may very depending on how much you think P. Lindsay will eat into Gordon's workload, the money is on the former Charger seizing a sizable advantageIf his health holds, his share of the HOU backfield workload should be major, but his potential in the passing game far outweighs his ground game at this point in career
Elliot Berkovits
Pack to the Future
The Broncos backfield looks like it could be the trickiest one to figure out in all of football. They paid to bring in Gordon but still roster a young and highly-talented RB in Phillip Lindsay. I see this being a near 50/50 split which is never a good thing for fantasy owners. After a horrid finish to the 2019 season, many fantasy players seem to be avoiding David Johnson. What people are forgetting is that prior to his injury last year, Johnson was the 6th highest scoring RB with an average of over 17 points per game. Now he joins another high-flying offense in Houston and should be in a great spot to outperform his current ADP.
Michael Petropoulos
BRoto Fantasy
I am COMPLETELY off of DJ this season. He has been a below average or injured back every year since 2016. I repeat, 2016. If you want to bet on a running back renaissance after three years of mediocrity, so be it, I will not be taking that bet.
Derek Lofland
FantasyPros
When Gordon is healthy, he is capable of 1,500 yards from scrimmage and double digit touchdowns. He should be the lead back in Denver, but it will be a very crowded RBBC.I do not think we will ever see 2016 David Johnson again. He joins a new team this year and he is now the lead back in the Texans offense and that should be an upgrade from RB Carlos Hyde. If he can stay healthy, Johnson should be a RB2 with some upside.
Kyle Yates
FantasyPros
Gordon's going to be splitting time with Phillip Lindsay this season, but Gordon should be the lead back in this offense. The Broncos are going to want to run the ball and Gordon should easily see over 210 carries this year. He's a solid RB2 option for your fantasy rosters.Johnson's now joining the Houston Texans and there is a huge workload waiting for him. If he can stay healthy, Johnson should easily return value this season. However, the last time that we saw Johnson, he looked like a shell of his former self. Additionally, Johnson's true fantasy value has come through his contributions in the receiving game. In Houston, with Duke Johnson also on this roster, it's difficult to see David Johnson seeing significant volume. If you draft David Johnson this year, you're betting on him staying fully healthy and him seeing a ton of work in the receiving game. Otherwise, he may go down as a wasted pick when it's all said and done.
Seth Miller
Crossroads Fantasy Football
1 year to go off because Vic, and his OC Scangarello don't have much history at their current positions. Denver was an average ball running team in 2019. 409 attempts. The 100 RB targets were nice. Someone is going to disappear out of this offense. I think it's assumed to be Royce, I can believe that, but what roll do they plan on losing Lindsay in? Breather back? He can not pass block, Royce is the best on the team for that. So Lindsay now appears to lose out in every phase, one way or another to his teammates, might see less work than anticipated. Will be taking advantage of his 1 highly publicized run while injured in 2019, of him trying to run around the corner at the speed of your grandpa while injured. Expecting amazing health? Not necessarily, but we've seen what a 1 dimensional, rather bland back can do with the reigns, in Carlos Hyde, in 2019. I'll gladly scoop Johnson as my RB3
Ben Wasley
The Fantasy First Down
Melvin Gordon to the Broncos is not as bad as most think. Gordon was clearly losing his role to Austin Ekeler and he now moves to an impressive run offence where he should be the clear lead guy. While Lindsay will clearly have a role, I expect Gordon to take the goal line carries, the 3rd down work and at least half of the between the tackles stuff making him the clear value in Denver. Given the Broncos backs combined for over 350 carries and 78 receptions, there's a lot of points to go around and Gordon should get the bulk of it. If Lindsay goes down there's always a chance he's a league winner too so the upside is there. Take a chance on him in the late 3rd round.Bill O'Brien has a long history of leaning on (often mediocre) running backs for 220-270 carries. Arian Foster, Alfred Blue, Lamar Miller and Carlos Hyde all became somewhat fantasy relevant in this offence and David Johnson is next on the list. The real question is how he fits in the passing game and that will make all the difference. The other D. Johnson, Duke, will certainly be a hindrance but we've seen DJ prove impossible to take off the field when things go right and it's just possible he explodes for a big season. I don't love the odds of that but even though this is very must Deshaun Watson's offence, I do think David Johnson has a very solid floor and provides a nice safe pick with solid upside.
