Lineups
The forgotten piece of the DeAndre Hopkins trade saga is David Johnson, a running back who's going to be heavily utilized in Houston. He'll benefit from playing with Deshaun Watson, especially since this team has among the most vacated targets in the NFL. DJ will be used on the ground and through the air and will likely turn in a surprisingly productive, high-end RB2 season. It feels like I'm the only one who's still in on Sony Michel for this season. Yes, he's injured, and yes, the Patriots offense is going to get worse without Tom Brady. However, Bill Belichick made Michel a first-round pick and has given him the full workload for the majority of his time on the field. If Michel can stay healthy, he should benefit from playing next to a mobile QB in Cam Newton, and he could easily surpass 250 touches.
Dan Harris
FantasyPros
Michel has justifiably fallen out of favor for fantasy owners after yet another sub-par year, and there's little excitement about him this year. He has averaged nearly 16 carries per game in his career, however, and may be asked to carry more of a load now that Tom Brady is no longer under center. But his upside is limited by his complete lack of involvement in the passing game, as he has just 31 targets and 19 receptions over his 29 career games. In standard scoring leagues, there's a chance he may be slightly undervalued given that Damien Harris was placed on IR and Lamar Miller was released, but it would be hard to rely on him as anything more than a bench player in or half- or full-PPR leagues. That's especially true given his foot surgery in May which could impact him early in the season.
Mike Tagliere
FantasyPros
The Texans gave their running backs 397 touches last year, and that was with DeAndre Hopkins on the roster. That's a lot of work. The only running back they've added was David Johnson. While Johnson looked horrendous down the stretch, it's possible he just tried to work his way back from injury way too soon. It appears Bill O'Brien isn't convinced that Johnson is done with his NFL career, like some. It's possible that he's not as electric as he once was, but guys, the Texans gave Carlos Hyde 255 touches last year. Opportunity is key in fantasy football, and Johnson appears to be in line for a lot of it in 2020, making him a low-end RB2 with upside for more should he actually be healthy. After a somewhat disappointing rookie campaign where he failed to finish as a top-24 running back despite racking up 209 carries in the high-scoring Patriots offense, Michel had an even worse sophomore campaign, averaging just 3.7 yards per carry and scoring just seven touchdowns on 259 touches. The Patriots spent a first-round pick on him, so he'll be given every opportunity to succeed, but they won't allow him to be inefficient much longer with Damien Harris waiting in the wings. Michel simply hasn't been the player we watched at Georgia. It's hard to see losing Tom Brady actually help him become more efficient. Not only that, but he now has to worry about Cam Newton stealing goal-line touches.
Draft Engine
Draft Engine
Acquired in a deal that sent DeAndre Hopkins to Arizona, Johnson has averaged 3.6 yards per carry over 30 games the past three seasons. Don't expect him to reach 50 catches with Duke Johnson having caught 30 passes over the second half of last season.Patriots offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels prefers a running scheme heavy on gap blocking, and Michel is a great fit for that approach. It's his lack of involvement in the passing game that will continue to limit his fantasy upside, especially in PPR leagues.
Ben Wasley
The Fantasy First Down
Bill O'Brien has a long history of leaning on (often mediocre) running backs for 220-270 carries. Arian Foster, Alfred Blue, Lamar Miller and Carlos Hyde all became somewhat fantasy relevant in this offense and David Johnson is next on the list. The real question is how he fits in the passing game and that will make all the difference. The other D. Johnson, Duke, will certainly be a hindrance but we've seen DJ prove impossible to take off the field when things go right and it's just possible he explodes for a big season. I don't love the odds of that but even though this is very must Deshaun Watson's offense, I do think David Johnson has a very solid floor and provides a nice safe pick with solid upside. The Damien Harris hype is building as Sony Michel battles to be ready for Week 1. He's becoming more of a low-upside gamble by the day but will provide some upside if you get him late enough in drafts.
Rob Wilson
The Fantasy Footballers
Johnson has lost a step, but O'Brien fed Lamar Miller. Boring albeit safe RB2 selection.
Dalton Kates
APEX Fantasy Leagues
Hasn't been good as a runner since his breakout campaign in 2016. Has still been efficient as a receiver and that's likely where he will thrive. Will be 29 this season which is well past the peak age for RBs. Duke Johnson has been great and efficient will be behind him if David falters and underperforms this year. r
Elliot Berkovits
Packer Report
After a horrid finish to the 2019 season, many fantasy players seem to be avoiding David Johnson. What people are forgetting is that prior to his injury last year, Johnson was the 6th highest scoring RB with an average of over 17 points per game. Now he joins another high-flying offense in Houston and should be in a great spot to outperform his current ADP.Few players are more difficult to gauge than Sony Michel. He can score three TD's one week and then have a total of 26 yards the next. In PPR formats he simply doesn't see the ball enough to considered a starter.
Brandon Funston
The Athletic
If his health holds, his share of the HOU backfield workload should be major, but his potential in the passing game far outweighs his ground game at this point in career
Jason Petropoulos
BRoto Fantasy
No thanks. No thanks. No thanks. There's no hidden value here. This is a guy who averaged 3.7 yards per carry on a decent offense last year and has never surpassed 7 TDs in a season. With the best goal-line running QB in NFL history leading the way now, Michel is best left off of your squad.

I am COMPLETELY off of DJ this season. He has been a below average or injured back every year since 2016. I repeat, 2016. If you want to bet on a running back renaissance after three years of mediocrity, so be it, I will not be taking that bet.

I do not think we will ever see 2016 David Johnson again. He joins a new team this year and he is now the lead back in the Texans offense and that should be an upgrade from RB Carlos Hyde. If he can stay healthy, Johnson should be a RB2 with some upside.

Johnson's now joining the Houston Texans and there is a huge workload waiting for him. If he can stay healthy, Johnson should easily return value this season. However, the last time that we saw Johnson, he looked like a shell of his former self. Additionally, Johnson's true fantasy value has come through his contributions in the receiving game. In Houston, with Duke Johnson also on this roster, it's difficult to see David Johnson seeing significant volume. If you draft David Johnson this year, you're betting on him staying fully healthy and him seeing a ton of work in the receiving game. Otherwise, he may go down as a wasted pick when it's all said and done. With Cam Newton behind center, this offense is going to be much more potent than it would have been with Jarrett Stidham. This benefits Michel with more scoring opportunities and trips into the red zone. However, the downside is that Newton has the size and power to take away some of those goal line touches. Michel's nothing more than a RB3 this season, in my opinion.

Will be taking advantage of his 1 highly publicized run while injured in 2019, of him trying to run around the corner at the speed of your grandpa while injured. Expecting amazing health? Not necessarily, but we've seen what a 1 dimensional, rather bland back can do with the reigns, in Carlos Hyde, in 2019. I'll gladly scoop Johnson as my RB3I've had 475 total touches in my first 2 years despite missing 3 games, but have finished as RB28, and 29 in those 2 years. Who am I? And why am I so bad?

The Texans have a glaring backfield need. Will DJ get himself in tip-top shape to shine here?*Update - Latest foot surgery extra concerning* Perhaps the Pats go run-obsessed in the Post Brady era? Nothing to really dig in and love here in such a messy RBBC, and wouldn't be surprised if Damien Harris pushes for the big back this year much harder.

Michel recovering from foot surgery, per sources. The surgery was viewed as more maintenance-based to relieve discomfort. How Michel's rehab progresses will determine if he opens training camp on PUP. @MikeReiss - I don't think he starts the season on PUP. I'm like being able to get him in the 8th-9th round.
