You're going to see Bell fall down draft boards this year, and further than he should. That's odd for me to say, as Bell was someone I was avoiding like the plague in drafts. The difference? Expectations. Playing him as your first-round pick in your RB1 slot was never something anyone should've expected, especially behind that offensive line and in Gase's offense. While he's still stuck in Gase's offense, the offensive line was upgraded quite a bit this offseason, which should allow Bell more room to work. Even if he repeated his 2019 performance, that's RB2 production. There were just 11 running backs who produced RB2 or better numbers more often than him. Sure, he didn't have a ton of weekly upside, but he was safe. Now coming off the board outside the top three rounds, Bell is a value play. There's only one direction for Montgomery and the Bears offense to go this year, right? They didn't address the offensive line as aggressive as I thought they would, but Mongtomery's role is safe as the only running back on the roster capable of handling 15-plus carries per game. It's also worth noting that despite not starting right out of the gate, Montgomery ranked sixth in the NFL for carries inside the five-yard-line. He may be a low-end RB2, but he's still an RB2 who's locked into 15-plus touches per game.
Elliot Berkovits
Pack to the Future
After a disappointing 2019 season, Bell is in need of a major bounce-back season which could be difficult considering he's playing on the Jets offense. I don't see Bell getting too many opportunities near the goal which means he'll have to rely heavily on his receiving numbers to be worthy of his ADP.Montgomery wasn't all too impressive as a rookie totaling 889 rushing yards and six TDs. The issue with Montgomery was his efficiency as he averaged only 3.7 ypc. Additionally, he only saw 35 targets in 2019 which downgrades him in PPR formats.
Brandon Funston
The Athletic
Volume remains elite, but it's going to take a leap of faith that improvements to the NYJ O-line and Bell's conditioning will catapult him back into the RB1 classLike Le'Veon, Monty has the workload if not a great environment or transcendent talent, but there's hope that new QB Foles will be an upgrade for the offense
Dan Harris
FantasyPros
Montgomery had a rough 2019 season, but there are plenty of reasons to expect him to be much better in 2020. He has no real competition for carries, he was used heavily within the 10-yard line last year, and the entire Chicago offense should be better with the expected switch to Nick Foles at quarterback. Montgomery should get plenty of touches this year, which is half the battle with the position. If the Chicago offense improves just a bit, he should easily produce solid RB2 numbers, with upside for even more if everything breaks right.
Jason Petropoulos
BRoto Fantasy
Monty had 267 touches last season and the Bears did nothing this off-season to suggest that that number will lessen at any point. They even brought in Nick Foles hoping for an upgrade in QB play. I don't love the player and he was awful on an efficiency basis last season, but if he could fall into the endzone a few more times this season than we could be looking at a MelGo type second-year performance.
Derek Lofland
FantasyPros
Bell should benefit from the Jets adding T Mekhi Becton and WR Denzel Mims in the NFL Draft. They also added RB La'Mical Perine in the 4th round and RB Frank Gore in free agency, but neither should not be a huge threat to Bell's touches this season.Montgomery had 1074 yards from scrimmage and 7 touchdowns in 2019, but QB Mitchell Trubisky must improve or Nick Foles must be an upgrade for Montgomery to build on last season.
Seth Miller
Crossroads Fantasy Football
Kind of betting on him to not have a more productive year, because RBs typically don't as they age. This is standard RB decline, despite whatever excuses he has. Gase also seems to be pretty good at ruining fantasy value. HOPEFULLY his line play is better but we don't know that until we see it. Yes, they replaced everyone, but I feel like we get in off-season mode where we just assume everything and everyone will be better without any evidence of it. Volume should keep him afloat.267 touches in 2019 were 12th among RBs. Nagy went from 6th in attempts in 2018(468), to 20th(395). I guess that happens when you aren't winning most games. He was still avoiding tackles at a high rate, much like college. Was 8th in the league with 47. However, PFF rated him as the 60th most elusive RB. What's the point of avoiding tackles if you have 10th percentile burst? 78% of top 12 RBs the last 3 years have received at least 250 touches. He obviously failed to reach top 12 with that amount last year but hard to see him not getting a similar workload in 2020 and another shot at it.
Kyle Yates
FantasyPros
Adam Gase seems intent on taking the ball out of Bell's hands and splitting the work among his other running backs. Frank Gore and Lamical Perine are both going to eat into Bell's touches and it's going to limit his production. Bell is nothing more than a low-end RB2 in this Jets offense, despite being one of the more talented running backs in the NFL.From a fantasy perspective, very few backs in the NFL are going to see the type of workload that Montgomery will in 2020. This offense should be much improved from its 2019 version and Montgomery's a screaming value at his current ADP.
Kevin Wheeler
Draftwize
Last year there were only 3 RBs to have 240+ rushing attempts and 75+ targets. I think we would be expecting some "positive" regression for Bell, especially in the TD department, but it seems that Gase is a subscriber to the "RB's don't matter" philosophy. I expect Gore, Perine or one of the journeymen the Jets have horded to cut into Bell's upside.Montgomery is a virtual LOCK for 240 carries. There have been 125 running backs who've hit that mark over the last 10 years. Guess how many of them finished worse than RB25? None. @MikeTagliereNFL
Ben Wasley
The Fantasy First Down
Le'Veon Bell once again proved that situation often trumps talent for running backs, as a mediocre O-line and Adam Gase led to a Derrick Henry level of volume (10 fewer touches) for 100 fewer fantasy points. Bell has massive room for improvement though, as he has no true competition (sorry La'Mical) and huge regression upside. Bell's never been a high TD guy or overly efficient but 4 yards per carry and 8 total TDs isn't an unreasonal expectation and that would mean a top 10 finish. Bump those up a little and he becomes a league winner. He's a great third round gamble you can pair with any of the riskier RBs like Fournette, Drake, Carson, CEH and Sanders. It was a difficult 2019 for the Bears but it's very hard to pin the blame on David Montgomery. While he failed to do anything special (see his bizarrely low yards after contact), the whole offence was a disaster and gave him nothing to work with. The volume with remain and he's got solid RB2 potential, especially in non-PPR. Just understand you don't have a potential stud on your hands here, simpy a solid provider.
