Pack to the Future
Samuel started his rookie season rather quietly but began to break out near the end of the season through the playoffs. He has a ton of talent but unfortunately, he also broke his foot this offseason which will force him to miss some time. How much time? As of now, no one knows. He's a risky pick but could be someone who comes up big for you down the stretch if you make it that far.Sanders finds himself in New Orleans playing with the best QB he's ever had which is great, but Michael Thomas is there and that is not great. Thomas and Alvin Kamara demand a massive share of the targets leaving Sanders with not much leftover. He'll have his big weeks in this high-flying Saints offense but he won't be consistent enough to be a weekly starter.
Mike Tagliere
FantasyPros
In case you missed it, Samuel broke his foot in June and needed to have surgery immediately. Any time a pass catcher has surgery on a foot or ankle in the same calendar year, you have to be concerned, as we've seen players continually struggle to produce. Kyle Shanahan has already come forward saying that Samuel will miss games, and that the only question is how many. This is a bit reminiscent of A.J. Green last year, where I kept telling people to take the discount as your WR3. Oddly enough, Samuel is being drafted in WR3 territory as the WR30 right now. There's no way I'll advise to make that mistake again, especially with a player who has such a limited sample size. He saw 81 targets last year. That's hardly "can't miss" material, anyway. If he falls into the double-digit rounds, he's not a bad gamble, but I wouldn't take him prior to then.It was remarkable to see Sanders come back from an Achilles injury at the age of 32, though there were a lot of inconsistencies in his performances. He had three games with 100-plus yards, but also had 10 games with 41 yards or less. Going to the Saints, he's not going to need a whole lot of targets to produce, but betting on him being anything other than a bye week filler would be a mistake. The Saints offense runs through Michael Thomas, and you're not going to take targets from him to feed a 33-year-old.
Ben Wasley
The Fantasy First Down
Deebo Samuel had an impressive though inconsistent debut season, relying on a number of breakout weeks and a surprising amount of very efficient rushing plays. Now heading into the 2020 with a broken left foot, he's a very risky proposition given his limited upside in this run-first offence. He's no longer a sleeper pick and profiles as the kind of guy you should avoid drafting unless you have a lot of bench space.I like Emmanuel Sanders, if only because it reassures me there's an NFL wide receiver older than me. The days of Sanders being a fantasy stud are long gone but he will have the occasional good week in an elite Saints offence that can't keep relying on Michael Thomas and Alvin Kamara. I believe his great impact will be on Jared Cook's red zone looks but it's also possible if Michael Thomas goes down, Sanders will return some good value. I'm personally not drafting an elderly WR2 who hasn't played 16 games since 2016, but I wouldn't call you crazy if you took the gamble. I just prefer to win my leagues rather than avoiding losing them ;)
Bart Wheeler
Hail to Fantasy Football
If he's ready for Week 1, I'll be bumping him into my top-40 WRs. For now, he's just outside of it.
Dan Harris
FantasyPros
Samuel suffered a broken foot (a Jones fracture, near the mid-point of the foot) on June 16th and had surgery that same day. He's been given a 10-week timetable for his return to action - six weeks for the fracture to heal plus four weeks to gradually return to playing shape - which would put him back to full speed in late-August and on track to start the season with the 49ers. But the 49ers have since come out and admitted that Samuel almost certainly won't be ready for the season, so your best-case scenario is that you're drafting a wide receiver who is coming off a significant injury and will miss the first few games. Despite Samuel's upside, that's just not someone fantasy managers should consider drafting until one of the very last rounds.Sanders is getting up there in age, but there were few better landing spots for him than New Orleans. As with his new counterpart Michael Thomas, Sanders has an elite catch rate, and will now have perhaps the most accurate passer in the history of the NFL throwing him the ball. His upside is limited by inability to find the end zone, as he hasn't scored more than four touchdowns in a season since 2016. But he should see plenty of targets, enough to make him a borderline WR3 most weeks in half- of full-PPR leagues.
Kyle Yates
FantasyPros
Unfortunately, Samuel recently suffered an injury that puts his availability for the beginning of the NFL season in jeopardy. He now has more competition at the position for targets too with Brandon Aiyuk and Trent Taylor back in the fold. Samuel's a WR4 with upside right now, in my opinion.Sanders is now on his third team in a year after being traded from Denver to San Francisco and now signing with the Saints. He'll be the clear second option at the WR position behind Michael Thomas, which is unlikely to lead to exorbitant fantasy numbers. With that being said, if Thomas were to miss time, Sanders immediately gets entered into the WR2 discussion based on pure volume.
Kevin Wheeler
Draftwize
Deebo Samuel suffered a broken foot on Tuesday (6/16) during a throwing session with teammates in Nashville and will be having surgery. It is being reported as a Jones fracture, and that he should be able to be on the field early in the season. That doesn't add up for me, Jones fractures are NOT good or easy recovery, in fact they often need a second surgery from what I understand. I'm staying away.
Brandon Funston
The Athletic
No 13 WR in FAN PPG from Weeks 10-17 - SF not a pass-heavy attack, but will likely open up a little more for in 2020, with Deebo and TE Kittle hogging those targets
Seth Miller
Crossroads Fantasy Football
A little worried about the ceiling anyone can have on the passing side in the way this current offense is set up. They've gone from to 2nd, 20th, and 29th in passing the last 3 years while moving up from 22nd, to 11th, and then 2nd in rushing attempts. This is the offense that Shanahan has built and I'm not sure anyone besides Kittle will lead the team in targets and Kittle barely got over 100 this year. His YAC ability will have to pave his way to success. The Pros: Sanders AVG 5.3 TGT/GAME with the 49ers over 10 weeks. During that time, Deebo was WR18, scoring less than 12 fantasy points only twice in that span. As much as Aiyuk might be a pest, to give him the same target volume as what Sanders earned would put him at 3 more targets his rookie year than what Deebo logged. Bringing Aiyuk in was more indicative of the other supporting WRs and exit of Sanders. A sneaky rushing base also helps boost Deebo's base. And while maintaining a strong run to pass ratio is what any team wants, we can't assume they will be bottom 10 in the league in pass ATT in 2020 again.Aside from 2 blowup games, he was rather useless for fantasy in a 49ers uniform. I don't doubt his will to be great, I doubt the passing volume of the offense and his ability to be anything but the third option behind Kittle and an emerging Deebo.
