Mike Tagliere
FantasyPros
Brown was the definition of consistency last year, finishing with at least 10.4 PPR points in 13-of-15 games. The issue was that he lacked upside, topping 20 PPR points just twice all year. Now adding Stefon Diggs to the offense, his target share is going to dip and make him much more inconsistent, as they're both perimeter players who'll compete for targets. After seeing 115 targets in 2019, it's possible that number dips into the 80-90 range in 2020. This receiving corps will be better for real life football in 2020, but fantasy-wise, there's likely to be a lot of bumpy roads. It was odd to see Samuel finish as a top-30 wide receiver last year, because it didn't feel that way throughout the year. He saw just 81 targets and had just two games with more than eight targets. The 49ers offense is going to be run-heavy, but Samuel will be the go-to guy when they do drop back to pass. He's also included in the run-game, as evidenced by his 159 rushing yards and three touchdowns last year. It's tough to see him having a true breakout season, especially when he suffered a broken foot during offseason training. The rumor is that he may not even be ready for Week 1 of the season. When a pass-catcher has foot surgery in the same calendar year, it usually means bad things for fantasy purposes. You may want to wait until 2021 to invest a redraft pick on the young receiver.
Dan Harris
FantasyPros
Samuel suffered a broken foot (a Jones fracture, near the mid-point of the foot) on June 16th and had surgery that same day. He's been given a 10-week timetable for his return to action - six weeks for the fracture to heal plus four weeks to gradually return to playing shape - which would put him back to full speed in late-August and on track to start the season with the 49ers. But the 49ers have since come out and admitted that Samuel almost certainly won't be ready for the season, so your best-case scenario is that you're drafting a wide receiver who is coming off a significant injury and will miss the first few games. Despite Samuel's upside, that's just not someone fantasy managers should consider drafting until one of the very last rounds.
Jason Petropoulos
BRoto Fantasy
Brown was 22nd in WR targets last season, was 31st in true target value (brotofantasy.com), and finished 20th in FPPG. He over-performed last season and may see less work with Diggs in town. With that said, this risk is currently baked into his ADP.
Ben Wasley
The Fantasy First Down
John Brown had an impressive career resurgence in 2019, exploding to 1000 yards and 6 TDs with 37% of the team's air yards as the Bills RB1. With Stefon Diggs now in town, we can expect some more freedom for Brown but also a lot of very quiet games. He'll be difficult to start with any certainty and is a boom/bust option better suited to Best Ball.Deebo Samuel had an impressive though inconsistent debut season, relying on a number of breakout weeks and a surprising amount of very efficient rushing plays. Now heading into the 2020 with a broken left foot, he's a very risky proposition given his limited upside in this run-first offence. He's no longer a sleeper pick and profiles as the kind of guy you should avoid drafting unless you have a lot of bench space.
Kyle Yates
FantasyPros
Brown was fantastic last season, but he's going to see a bit of regression this year with the addition of Stefon Diggs to the offense. Diggs is going to command targets, which limits Brown's overall ceiling. He's nothing more than a WR3/FLEX option this season that has the potential to win you a week with one or two big plays.Unfortunately, Samuel recently suffered an injury that puts his availability for the beginning of the NFL season in jeopardy. He now has more competition at the position for targets too with Brandon Aiyuk and Trent Taylor back in the fold. Samuel's a WR4 with upside right now, in my opinion.
Kevin Wheeler
Draftwize
Deebo Samuel suffered a broken foot on Tuesday (6/16) during a throwing session with teammates in Nashville and will be having surgery. It is being reported as a Jones fracture, and that he should be able to be on the field early in the season. That doesn't add up for me, Jones fractures are NOT good or easy recovery, in fact they often need a second surgery from what I understand. I'm staying away.
Bart Wheeler
Hail to Fantasy Football
A broken foot has me dropping him well outside of my top-30 WRs.
Brandon Funston
The Athletic
No 13 WR in FAN PPG from Weeks 10-17 - SF not a pass-heavy attack, but will likely open up a little more for in 2020, with Deebo and TE Kittle hogging those targets
Seth Miller
Crossroads Fantasy Football
Can be a perfectly fine fill in as your NFL team's WR1 but it isn't the roll he's best suited for. Even filling that roll this year he wasn't a clear target hog. Will most likely get pushed to second fiddle when the draft comes along but I think that effects his perceived fantasy value more than his actual worth. Can still get around 100 targets and be flexy.A little worried about the ceiling anyone can have on the passing side in the way this current offense is set up. They've gone from to 2nd, 20th, and 29th in passing the last 3 years while moving up from 22nd, to 11th, and then 2nd in rushing attempts. This is the offense that Shanahan has built and I'm not sure anyone besides Kittle will lead the team in targets and Kittle barely got over 100 this year. His YAC ability will have to pave his way to success. The Pros: Sanders AVG 5.3 TGT/GAME with the 49ers over 10 weeks. During that time, Deebo was WR18, scoring less than 12 fantasy points only twice in that span. As much as Aiyuk might be a pest, to give him the same target volume as what Sanders earned would put him at 3 more targets his rookie year than what Deebo logged. Bringing Aiyuk in was more indicative of the other supporting WRs and exit of Sanders. A sneaky rushing base also helps boost Deebo's base. And while maintaining a strong run to pass ratio is what any team wants, we can't assume they will be bottom 10 in the league in pass ATT in 2020 again.
