This is Freeman's backfield but Booker has the talent to carve out a significant roleImpressive power and vision for a big back but buried behind Hyde and Duke Johnson; RB2 if Hyde goes down
Bobby Sylvester
FantasyPros
While it seems that the Broncos drafted Royce Freeman to jump in as the lead-back from Week 1, it isn't certain quite yet. Booker is said to have the starting job for now, and while that may still mean a split backfield, Booker is worth drafting just in case. The Browns may have drafted Chubb early, and he certainly looks impressive on tape, but don't overlook the fact that Carlos Hyde was extremely good last season and is getting all the first-team reps so far. It won't be an easy task for Chubb to take over as the starter, and even if he does, don't expect a workhorse type of workload. Don't forget that Duke Johnson is plenty impressive himself too.
Andrew Gould
FantasyPros
Averaging 3.6 YPC over two years, picking Booker is a bet of him getting more volume than rookie Royce Freeman. He found pay dirt once despite receiving 17 red-zone carries, but also produced 14.8 PPR points in his only game playing the majority of Denver's snaps. Despite what the depth chart says, Freeman looks poised to assume C.J. Anderson's leading rushing role, which leaves Booker as bench fodder. Shortly after signing Carlos Hyde, the Browns drafted Chubb at pick No. 35. After suffering a devastating knee injury in 2015, he fully recovered to register 5.5 YPC and 24 TDs the following two seasons for Georgia. Like Hyde, he's an intriguing mid-draft pick based if he could somehow escape a committee. Yet the likelihood of limited volume makes him a better dynasty investment.
Kevin Wheeler
NFL Mock
Could get first crack at being the lead back in Denver. Booker's per-carry average of 3.6 yards is 27th out of the 29 backs in 2016-17 who had at least 250 carries (Booker had 253). "He's got to come out and work and earn the right to be the (first) guy," Joseph said. "He understands that with C.J. gone, it's a wide open race. He's a good football player, but we want more from him, obviously." denverpost.com He probably won't be much of a factor to start the season, but should emerge in the second half. If he is dropped by whomever drafts him definitely grab him off waivers, Hyde tends to get hurt every year.
Staff Rankings
QB List
Personally, I'm a Royce Freeman believer, and that's partly why I have Booker as low as I do. Could Booker get the majority of the work Week 1? Sure, that's definitely possible, but even if he does I don't expect him to hang onto the job for long. He's had and lost the starting job too many times for me to have any faith in him, and he ended the year last year with a -9.2% DVOA. However, he's still worth a grab in the later rounds on the chance that he gets the starting gig and hangs onto it-even if he's not that good, being a starting running back in the NFL is worth something in fantasy. The Browns used a high second-round pick to draft Chubb, so I expect that he's viewed as the future of the Browns backfield. I like his talent a lot, but I don't anticipate him supplanting Carlos Hyde for the starting gig. I just don't believe the Browns would go out and sign Hyde to a three-year, $15.25M deal just to bench him for a rookie. That being said, Hyde has had plenty of injuries in his past, which means Chubb is a valuable handcuff.
Chet Gresham
WalterFootball
There are reports that Booker will share the load with Royce Freeman, but I just haven't seen enough out of Booker to take that news as actionable in these rankings. I believe Freeman gets some leeway and plenty of chances to lead the Broncos on the ground.Chubb landed in a tough spot, as Carlos Hyde is a good starting running back and likely won't be relegated to a clear backup role. Chubb's ability makes it hard to rank him too far down, but touches will likely be a problem.
Mike Tagliere
FantasyPros
I love Royce Freeman's game, which is why I don't view Booker as a threat to him. With that being said, NFL teams sometimes do some weird things and make rookies "earn their stripes." Booker is someone who played behind C.J. Anderson the last few years, and the Broncos cut Anderson this offseason. Then they drafted Freeman in the third-round. What does that tell you about Booker? He's just a handcuff and not one that you should go out of your way to draft, as we've seen him in a workhorse role before back in 2016. It wasn't pretty. It's very possible that Chubb moves up my board as the offseason goes on, but it's unrealistic to think that he walks in and takes the starting job from Carlos Hyde, the veteran they hand-selected early in free agency. While Chubb is their running back of the future, it's hard to love him with Hyde and Duke Johnson in town, as they have early-down work covered, as well as third-down work, though Chubb doesn't contribute much in the passing-game. He's simply a high-upside stash right now who is likely to see 5-10 carries per game early in the season.
Kevin Roberts
Breaking Football
Booker is a solid talent but he has been a bust so far and he has competition. I like him as a late flier but I can't invest early in himI love Chubb's physical ability and overall talent, while supplanting Carlos Hyde may not be a huge reach. he's a terrific late round pick
