Barber played well down the stretch last season and clearly beat out second-rounder Ronald Jones.
Raju Byfield
Win My Fantasy League
Ronald Jones continues to stumble leaving Barber the lead back job to open the season but don't expect it to last This is Freeman's backfield but Booker has the talent to carve out a significant role
Bobby Sylvester
FantasyPros
The Bucs are suggesting Barber will be their starter to open up the season, but even if it is true, Ronald Jones would likely take over within a few weeks. Barber's ceiling is limited to a flex play even while he is the starter. While it seems that the Broncos drafted Royce Freeman to jump in as the lead-back from Week 1, it isn't certain quite yet. Booker is said to have the starting job for now, and while that may still mean a split backfield, Booker is worth drafting just in case.
Andrew Gould
FantasyPros
Following Week 12's unlikely seven-yard, two-TD line, Barber emerged from the shadows to produce 418 total yards in five games as Tampa Bay's featured back. His 57 % success rate tied Ezekiel Elliott for second among 47 qualified rushers, and he has lost weight in hopes of gaining speed. Reportedly Tampa Bay's starter over first-round pick Ronald Jones, Barber still possesses an ADP outside the top 100.Averaging 3.6 YPC over two years, picking Booker is a bet of him getting more volume than rookie Royce Freeman. He found pay dirt once despite receiving 17 red-zone carries, but also produced 14.8 PPR points in his only game playing the majority of Denver's snaps. Despite what the depth chart says, Freeman looks poised to assume C.J. Anderson's leading rushing role, which leaves Booker as bench fodder.
Derek Lofland
Fantasy Football Maniax
Barber has sealed the starting job in Tampa Bay and he looks like he could have flex value this year.
Kevin Wheeler
NFL Mock
Peyton Barber continues to impress. Broke through arm tackles, darted through creases and showed sharp vision in Tampa's opening TD drive. @YahooNoise Peyton Barber is 100% the lead back right now. Ronald Jones II is the two. RoJo is definitely faster, but Barber looks much better in receiving game and overall. Could get first crack at being the lead back in Denver. Booker's per-carry average of 3.6 yards is 27th out of the 29 backs in 2016-17 who had at least 250 carries (Booker had 253). "He's got to come out and work and earn the right to be the (first) guy," Joseph said. "He understands that with C.J. gone, it's a wide open race. He's a good football player, but we want more from him, obviously." denverpost.com
Chet Gresham
WalterFootball
Barber looks to have won the lead back job to start the season. He will need to hold off Ronald Jones, but Jones has gotten off to a slow start. *There are reports that Booker will share the load with Royce Freeman, but I just haven't seen enough out of Booker to take that news as actionable in these rankings. I believe Freeman gets some leeway and plenty of chances to lead the Broncos on the ground.
Mike Tagliere
FantasyPros
When the Bucs draft a running back at the top of the second-round, call me skeptical on just how long Barber holds the starting job. Whether or not you like it, draft stock matters. Barber is a formerly undrafted free agent who the Bucs let sit on the bench while Doug Martin and Charles Sims combined for 1,071 yards on 354 carries over the last two years. That amounts to just 3.03 yards per carry. While Barber played better, they obviously felt the need to invest in Ronald Jones. It seems that Barber will start with the bigger workload, but Jones is still the back I want to own, as talent wins in the end. Still, it's likely to be somewhat of a timeshare between the two all season. I love Royce Freeman's game, which is why I don't view Booker as a threat to him. With that being said, NFL teams sometimes do some weird things and make rookies "earn their stripes." Booker is someone who played behind C.J. Anderson the last few years, and the Broncos cut Anderson this offseason. Then they drafted Freeman in the third-round. What does that tell you about Booker? He's just a handcuff and not one that you should go out of your way to draft, as we've seen him in a workhorse role before back in 2016. It wasn't pretty.
Staff Rankings
QB List
Personally, I'm a Royce Freeman believer, and that's partly why I have Booker as low as I do. Could Booker get the majority of the work Week 1? Sure, that's definitely possible, but even if he does I don't expect him to hang onto the job for long. He's had and lost the starting job too many times for me to have any faith in him, and he ended the year last year with a -9.2% DVOA. However, he's still worth a grab in the later rounds on the chance that he gets the starting gig and hangs onto it-even if he's not that good, being a starting running back in the NFL is worth something in fantasy.
Kevin Roberts
Breaking Football
Booker is a solid talent but he has been a bust so far and he has competition. I like him as a late flier but I can't invest early in him
