Carson also beat out a more-heralded rookie to retain his starting gig. He's got RB2 upside if he can retain that job, which is certainly not out of the question with Pete Carroll calling the shots.
Derek Lofland
Fantasy Football Maniax
Chris Carson will start the season as the lead running back in Seattle, but it is going to be a RBBC and he could lose touches to RB Rashaad Penny later in the season.
Raju Byfield
Win My Fantasy League
Should have value for a few weeks until Penny up to speedLooked done in Tampa Bay but could see a resurgence as Lynch's backup; one of the top handcuffs to own as of today
Andrew Gould
FantasyPros
On the verge of cementing Seattle's featured role, Carson suffered a season-ending ankle injury in Week 4 after totaling 56 touches and 297 yards. Pete Carroll--perhaps the only coach who would consider playing a seventh-round pick over first-round selection Rashad Penny--was treating Carson as a starter before Penny injured his finger. He's an intriguing mid-draft choice who now should require a top-100 investment.Martin has cleared 1,400 rushing yards twice in his career, but he has also averaged 2.9 YPC in back-to-back seasons derailed by injuries. He hasn't rushed for 100 yards in a single game since garnering 235 on Nov. 22, 2015. According to ESPN's Bill Barnwell, nobody generated negative expected points on a higher percentage of runs than the Muscle Hamster's 71.7 in 2017. Jon Gruden should quickly see that Marshawn Lynch is the superior veteran RB deserving of Oakland's workload.
Bobby Sylvester
FantasyPros
Although the Seahawks just spent serious draft capital on a running back, it is growing more difficult to ignore the reports about Chris Carson excelling this off-season. Pete Carroll is not afraid to give the better man the job and accept a sunken cost. There is a chance Carson blossoms into a quality RB2 if he keeps the job.Martin has been an RB1 multiple times in his career and it wouldn't surprise anyone if he suddenly returned to that type of production. With that said, it would take an injured Marshawn Lynch to get him enough touches to make some noise.
Kevin Wheeler
NFL Mock
He's the clear RB1 in Seattle to start the season, but this is the worst O-line in the NFL and Carson was a UDFA, he won't last the whole season as the RB1.Doug Martin has multiple 1,400-yard rushing seasons on his resume and the word on the street is positive in Oakland. He's a nice value at his current ADP (163 overall, RB54 on MFL10). @EricNMoody "Jon Gruden is big on (Doug Martin), who is slated for "a bigger workload than your traditional backup running back." MercuryNews.com Among qualified RBs, Doug Martin was last in success rate (35%), missed tackles forced per carry (.04), and percentage of carries to gain 5+ yards (20%) last year. @GrahamBarfield Doug Martin has had a top-12 RB finish once every three years, he has been trash for the past two. He will have to be very fortunate to even get the opportunity to continue this pattern.
Mike Tagliere
FantasyPros
If the Seahawks really believed in Carson as much as they say they do, why did they use a first-round pick on Rashaad Penny? There are now three beat reporters who are saying that Carson is absolutely the starter, but that Penny will have a role. This is clearly a mess of a backfield that's behind one of the worst run-blocking units in football. Carson is a very risky pick, but one that costs a lot less than Penny, who is now slated to miss 3-4 weeks with a broken finger. If you're looking for an early-season running back, Carson is likely to fill that role. It seems like his ADP may move up sooner than I'd hoped, but Martin is one of my favorite late-round sleepers. Word has come out that he looks phenomenal at OTAs. Battling a 32-year-old Marshawn Lynch who has a history of back problems? Playing behind a top-five offensive line? Sign me up. It's rare to find a running back being draft so late who has multiple 1,400-yard rushing seasons on his resume. While it's Lynch's job, it seems like Jon Gruden has a clear role for Martin in the offense.
Staff Rankings
QB List
I'm expecting rookie Rashaad Penny to get the gig in Seattle, but like I said in his entry, Pete Carroll is a strange man who makes strange decisions, and if he decided to YOLO his running back choice and bench Penny for Carson, I wouldn't be overly shocked. Carson's shown some flashes in the past, and for whatever it's worth, he finished last year with a 7.0% DVOA, but I'm expecting him to be the backup guy to Penny.Martin has and continues to be a frustrating player to own in fantasy. He was terrible last year, ending the season with an awful -22.5% DVOA, good for dead-last among running backs with at least 100 carries last season. Now, he's the backup to Marshawn Lynch and is little more than a somewhat valuable handcuff, given that, if Lynch gets hurt, he'll be behind a better offensive line and in a better offense than he was in with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
Kevin Roberts
Breaking Football
He's my favorite Seahawks RB so far and I love the build and quick-cutting ability. If Seattle wants to run, he could be a huge steal
