FantasyPros
A big Super Bowl performance (100 receiving YDs and a TD) will create some buzz for Clement. While it's unwise to overvalue the most recent outcome, it was at least intriguing to see the 23-year-old match his season reception tally (10) in three postseason bouts. He could carve out a bigger role if the 35-year-old Darren Sproles doesn't successfully return from a broken arm and torn ACL. Scoring six TDs (three in one blowout win) on 84 touches represents an unsustainable formula, but Clement could also receive more red-zone work if Jay Ajayi's goal-line struggles persist. There's a path to a breakout, especially with Ajayi already nursing an undisclosed injury.Martin has cleared 1,400 rushing yards twice in his career, but he has also averaged 2.9 YPC in back-to-back seasons derailed by injuries. He hasn't rushed for 100 yards in a single game since garnering 235 on Nov. 22, 2015. According to ESPN's Bill Barnwell, nobody generated negative expected points on a higher percentage of runs than the Muscle Hamster's 71.7 in 2017. Jon Gruden should quickly see that Marshawn Lynch is the superior veteran RB deserving of Oakland's workload.
Bobby Sylvester
FantasyPros
Martin has been an RB1 multiple times in his career and it wouldn't surprise anyone if he suddenly returned to that type of production. With that said, it would take an injured Marshawn Lynch to get him enough touches to make some noise.
Kevin Wheeler
NFL Mock
Clement is more than just a handcuff, he will have stand-alone value and could see a majority of the carries inside the 5 yard-line. Doug Martin has multiple 1,400-yard rushing seasons on his resume and the word on the street is positive in Oakland. He's a nice value at his current ADP (163 overall, RB54 on MFL10). @EricNMoody "Jon Gruden is big on (Doug Martin), who is slated for "a bigger workload than your traditional backup running back." MercuryNews.com Among qualified RBs, Doug Martin was last in success rate (35%), missed tackles forced per carry (.04), and percentage of carries to gain 5+ yards (20%) last year. @GrahamBarfield Doug Martin has had a top-12 RB finish once every three years, he has been trash for the past two. He will have to be very fortunate to even get the opportunity to continue this pattern.
Mike Tagliere
FantasyPros
It seemed that Clement started to pick up steam in his pursuit for more snaps as the year went on, but he never topped 28 snaps. Keep in mind that's with Darren Sproles missing essentially the entire season, and he's been brought back in 2018. Between Sproles, Jay Ajayi, and Clement, this is going to be a wildly inconsistent backfield for fantasy purposes. He's nothing more than a bench-stash who has value should something happen to Ajayi or Sproles. It seems like his ADP may move up sooner than I'd hoped, but Martin is one of my favorite late-round sleepers. Word has come out that he looks phenomenal at OTAs. Battling a 32-year-old Marshawn Lynch who has a history of back problems? Playing behind a top-five offensive line? Sign me up. It's rare to find a running back being draft so late who has multiple 1,400-yard rushing seasons on his resume. While it's Lynch's job, it seems like Jon Gruden has a clear role for Martin in the offense.
Staff Rankings
QB List
Our own Alex Silverman wrote a while back on why Corey Clement could be really useful for you in a PPR league, and I like him as a sleeper. But in a standard league, his value goes down a bit, as he'll likely be primarily playing as the backup to Jay Ajayi. Still, if Ajayi gets hurt, Clement has RB2 upside, and if Clement's role is increased more than just as a passing down back and change-of-pace back, he'll jump up the rankings quickly, he's a very talented runner.Martin has and continues to be a frustrating player to own in fantasy. He was terrible last year, ending the season with an awful -22.5% DVOA, good for dead-last among running backs with at least 100 carries last season. Now, he's the backup to Marshawn Lynch and is little more than a somewhat valuable handcuff, given that, if Lynch gets hurt, he'll be behind a better offensive line and in a better offense than he was in with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
Chet Gresham
WalterFootball
Clement looks like the real deal, and with enough work, he could shine, especially with the Eagles' offense. It doesn't look like Darren Sproles will be a detriment to his touches, so I'm on board with Clement in most leagues.Martin is a tough nut to crack because we know he has the ability but we sure haven't seen it lately. The good news for him is that he gets a big upgrade with Oakland's offensive line and Marshawn Lynch has some age and injury history that could keep him from a big workload.
Raju Byfield
Win My Fantasy League
Looked done in Tampa Bay but could see a resurgence as Lynch's backup; one of the top handcuffs to own as of today
