With McKinnon gone Murray is a top handcuff; could flirt with flex value to open season until Cook proves he is ready for feature back workload once againLooked done in Tampa Bay but could see a resurgence as Lynch's backup; one of the top handcuffs to own as of today
Bobby Sylvester
FantasyPros
Dalvin Cook was an absolute bell-cow for the Vikings before his injury, but a lot of that may have been because Murray was injured. There is a possibility that Murray has a role in a split backfield sort of situation and gets some goal-line carries. Plus, just imagine how Murray would perform if Cook was hurt and McKinnon is now out of his way.Martin has been an RB1 multiple times in his career and it wouldn't surprise anyone if he suddenly returned to that type of production. With that said, it would take an injured Marshawn Lynch to get him enough touches to make some noise.
Kevin Wheeler
NFL Mock
I believe he will see the goaline work as well as 125-150 carries throughout the season.Doug Martin has multiple 1,400-yard rushing seasons on his resume and the word on the street is positive in Oakland. He's a nice value at his current ADP (163 overall, RB54 on MFL10). @EricNMoody "Jon Gruden is big on (Doug Martin), who is slated for "a bigger workload than your traditional backup running back." MercuryNews.com Among qualified RBs, Doug Martin was last in success rate (35%), missed tackles forced per carry (.04), and percentage of carries to gain 5+ yards (20%) last year. @GrahamBarfield Doug Martin has had a top-12 RB finish once every three years, he has been trash for the past two. He will have to be very fortunate to even get the opportunity to continue this pattern.
Mike Tagliere
FantasyPros
There are some who are expecting the Vikings backfield to be split similar to the way it was last year with Jerick McKinnon and Murray, but I'm not one of them. Dalvin Cook had a stranglehold on the job prior to tearing his ACL, as he averaged 23.7 touches per game in his first three full games. With his injury coming so early in the year, he'll be back for Week 1, which would have Murray return to a 6-10 touch role, which is unusable for fantasy, making him a high-end backup running back. It seems like his ADP may move up sooner than I'd hoped, but Martin is one of my favorite late-round sleepers. Word has come out that he looks phenomenal at OTAs. Battling a 32-year-old Marshawn Lynch who has a history of back problems? Playing behind a top-five offensive line? Sign me up. It's rare to find a running back being draft so late who has multiple 1,400-yard rushing seasons on his resume. While it's Lynch's job, it seems like Jon Gruden has a clear role for Martin in the offense.
Staff Rankings
QB List
Now that Jerick McKinnon is gone, Murray presents himself as a pretty valuable handcuff. Dalvin Cook will obviously be the primary back in Minnesota, but if Cook were to get hurt (like, you know, he did last year), Murray will almost certainly have the job to himself (I doubt Mack Brown is going to challenge him for it).Martin has and continues to be a frustrating player to own in fantasy. He was terrible last year, ending the season with an awful -22.5% DVOA, good for dead-last among running backs with at least 100 carries last season. Now, he's the backup to Marshawn Lynch and is little more than a somewhat valuable handcuff, given that, if Lynch gets hurt, he'll be behind a better offensive line and in a better offense than he was in with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
Chet Gresham
WalterFootball
Murray showed that he can produce in the Vikings' offense, and now, he doesn't have Jerick McKinnon to take away work if Dalvin Cook were to miss any time. Murray makes for a strong handcuff and/or lottery ticket this year.Martin is a tough nut to crack because we know he has the ability but we sure haven't seen it lately. The good news for him is that he gets a big upgrade with Oakland's offensive line and Marshawn Lynch has some age and injury history that could keep him from a big workload.
Andrew Gould
FantasyPros
Even ardent handcuffing opponents have to admit the logic of pairing Dalvin Cook with Murray, who was the standard RB9 after Minnesota's rookie tore his ACL. Murray stockpiled 215 touches (41 inside the red zone) and eight TDs in those dozen games, and that was with the since departed Jerick McKinnon in the mix. Anyone who spends a second-round pick on Cook ought to grab his clear understudy 10 rounds later. Martin has cleared 1,400 rushing yards twice in his career, but he has also averaged 2.9 YPC in back-to-back seasons derailed by injuries. He hasn't rushed for 100 yards in a single game since garnering 235 on Nov. 22, 2015. According to ESPN's Bill Barnwell, nobody generated negative expected points on a higher percentage of runs than the Muscle Hamster's 71.7 in 2017. Jon Gruden should quickly see that Marshawn Lynch is the superior veteran RB deserving of Oakland's workload.
