FantasyPros
Him separating his shoulder in the preseason opener cost him the entire preseason, but he's expected back for Week 1. The bad news is that they signed Alfred Morris during that time, and he's likely the better 1-2 down back. Now that Jerick McKinnon is out for the year, Breida has a locked-in role as the better pass-catcher out of the backfield and he should be mixed in on first and second downs. Game-script will likely decide which of these running backs is the better play each week. It seems like his ADP may move up sooner than I'd hoped, but Martin is one of my favorite late-round sleepers. Word has come out that he looks phenomenal at OTAs. Battling a 32-year-old Marshawn Lynch who has a history of back problems? Playing behind a top-five offensive line? Sign me up. It's rare to find a running back being draft so late who has multiple 1,400-yard rushing seasons on his resume. While it's Lynch's job, it seems like Jon Gruden has a clear role for Martin in the offense.
Raju Byfield
Win My Fantasy League
Solid sleeper target who could become the 49ers most valuable fantasy asset in the backfield Looked done in Tampa Bay but could see a resurgence as Lynch's backup; one of the top handcuffs to own as of today
Andrew Gould
FantasyPros
Despite taking a back seat to Carlos Hyde, Breida finished his rookie campaign as the RB44 with 40.3 yards per game. He averaged an elevated 55.6 yards in 11 touches per game when Jimmy Garoppolo started, so he should remain involved and consume Jerick McKinnon's leftovers. He could flourish as a late dart throw if McKinnon can't handle the meatier workload.Martin has cleared 1,400 rushing yards twice in his career, but he has also averaged 2.9 YPC in back-to-back seasons derailed by injuries. He hasn't rushed for 100 yards in a single game since garnering 235 on Nov. 22, 2015. According to ESPN's Bill Barnwell, nobody generated negative expected points on a higher percentage of runs than the Muscle Hamster's 71.7 in 2017. Jon Gruden should quickly see that Marshawn Lynch is the superior veteran RB deserving of Oakland's workload.
Bobby Sylvester
FantasyPros
The 49ers paid big bucks for Jerick McKinnon, but they also didn't draft a running back which means Shanahan seems to be comfortable with Breida as his number two. Remember that Tevin Coleman was created by Shanahan's offense and that Breida is an even better athlete.Martin has been an RB1 multiple times in his career and it wouldn't surprise anyone if he suddenly returned to that type of production. With that said, it would take an injured Marshawn Lynch to get him enough touches to make some noise.
Rich Piazza
Fantasy Shed
We are going to have to monitor the shoulder injury that Breida suffered in the first preseason game. Head Coach Kyle Shanahan said he expects him to miss some time, but there is no doubt that the 49ers want Breida to be part of the offensive game-plan.
Staff Rankings
QB List
So here's a quick list of the top-five running backs with at least 100 carries in DVOA last year: Alvin Kamara, Dion Lewis, Alex Collins, Todd Gurley, and Matt Breida. No, you didn't read that wrong. Breida ended the season with a 13% DVOA, ahead of guys like Ezekiel Elliott, Mark Ingram, and Le'Veon Bell. Now look, I'm not saying Breida has a ton of value, he's likely second-fiddle to Jerick McKinnon, but if something happens to McKinnon, Breida has a lot of upside.Martin has and continues to be a frustrating player to own in fantasy. He was terrible last year, ending the season with an awful -22.5% DVOA, good for dead-last among running backs with at least 100 carries last season. Now, he's the backup to Marshawn Lynch and is little more than a somewhat valuable handcuff, given that, if Lynch gets hurt, he'll be behind a better offensive line and in a better offense than he was in with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
Chet Gresham
WalterFootball
Breida could become the Tevin Coleman back in Shanahan's system, which would be a profitable spot to be if this offense plays like it could.Martin is a tough nut to crack because we know he has the ability but we sure haven't seen it lately. The good news for him is that he gets a big upgrade with Oakland's offensive line and Marshawn Lynch has some age and injury history that could keep him from a big workload.
Kevin Wheeler
NFL Mock
Breida has value in "Tevin Coleman role" of the Shanahan offense and playing behind a player who likely can't be a workhorse. He's one injury from an explosion of a season. High upside low risk. @ConnorAllenNFL Doug Martin has multiple 1,400-yard rushing seasons on his resume and the word on the street is positive in Oakland. He's a nice value at his current ADP (163 overall, RB54 on MFL10). @EricNMoody "Jon Gruden is big on (Doug Martin), who is slated for "a bigger workload than your traditional backup running back." MercuryNews.com Among qualified RBs, Doug Martin was last in success rate (35%), missed tackles forced per carry (.04), and percentage of carries to gain 5+ yards (20%) last year. @GrahamBarfield Doug Martin has had a top-12 RB finish once every three years, he has been trash for the past two. He will have to be very fortunate to even get the opportunity to continue this pattern.
