Barber played well down the stretch last season and clearly beat out second-rounder Ronald Jones.
Raju Byfield
Win My Fantasy League
Ronald Jones continues to stumble leaving Barber the lead back job to open the season but don't expect it to last Looked done in Tampa Bay but could see a resurgence as Lynch's backup; one of the top handcuffs to own as of today
Andrew Gould
FantasyPros
Following Week 12's unlikely seven-yard, two-TD line, Barber emerged from the shadows to produce 418 total yards in five games as Tampa Bay's featured back. His 57 % success rate tied Ezekiel Elliott for second among 47 qualified rushers, and he has lost weight in hopes of gaining speed. Reportedly Tampa Bay's starter over first-round pick Ronald Jones, Barber still possesses an ADP outside the top 100.Martin has cleared 1,400 rushing yards twice in his career, but he has also averaged 2.9 YPC in back-to-back seasons derailed by injuries. He hasn't rushed for 100 yards in a single game since garnering 235 on Nov. 22, 2015. According to ESPN's Bill Barnwell, nobody generated negative expected points on a higher percentage of runs than the Muscle Hamster's 71.7 in 2017. Jon Gruden should quickly see that Marshawn Lynch is the superior veteran RB deserving of Oakland's workload.
Derek Lofland
Fantasy Football Maniax
Barber has sealed the starting job in Tampa Bay and he looks like he could have flex value this year.
Kevin Wheeler
NFL Mock
Peyton Barber continues to impress. Broke through arm tackles, darted through creases and showed sharp vision in Tampa's opening TD drive. @YahooNoise Peyton Barber is 100% the lead back right now. Ronald Jones II is the two. RoJo is definitely faster, but Barber looks much better in receiving game and overall. Doug Martin has multiple 1,400-yard rushing seasons on his resume and the word on the street is positive in Oakland. He's a nice value at his current ADP (163 overall, RB54 on MFL10). @EricNMoody "Jon Gruden is big on (Doug Martin), who is slated for "a bigger workload than your traditional backup running back." MercuryNews.com Among qualified RBs, Doug Martin was last in success rate (35%), missed tackles forced per carry (.04), and percentage of carries to gain 5+ yards (20%) last year. @GrahamBarfield Doug Martin has had a top-12 RB finish once every three years, he has been trash for the past two. He will have to be very fortunate to even get the opportunity to continue this pattern.
Chet Gresham
WalterFootball
Barber looks to have won the lead back job to start the season. He will need to hold off Ronald Jones, but Jones has gotten off to a slow start. *Martin is a tough nut to crack because we know he has the ability but we sure haven't seen it lately. The good news for him is that he gets a big upgrade with Oakland's offensive line and Marshawn Lynch has some age and injury history that could keep him from a big workload.
Mike Tagliere
FantasyPros
When the Bucs draft a running back at the top of the second-round, call me skeptical on just how long Barber holds the starting job. Whether or not you like it, draft stock matters. Barber is a formerly undrafted free agent who the Bucs let sit on the bench while Doug Martin and Charles Sims combined for 1,071 yards on 354 carries over the last two years. That amounts to just 3.03 yards per carry. While Barber played better, they obviously felt the need to invest in Ronald Jones. It seems that Barber will start with the bigger workload, but Jones is still the back I want to own, as talent wins in the end. Still, it's likely to be somewhat of a timeshare between the two all season. It seems like his ADP may move up sooner than I'd hoped, but Martin is one of my favorite late-round sleepers. Word has come out that he looks phenomenal at OTAs. Battling a 32-year-old Marshawn Lynch who has a history of back problems? Playing behind a top-five offensive line? Sign me up. It's rare to find a running back being draft so late who has multiple 1,400-yard rushing seasons on his resume. While it's Lynch's job, it seems like Jon Gruden has a clear role for Martin in the offense.
Bobby Sylvester
FantasyPros
The Bucs are suggesting Barber will be their starter to open up the season, but even if it is true, Ronald Jones would likely take over within a few weeks. Barber's ceiling is limited to a flex play even while he is the starter.Martin has been an RB1 multiple times in his career and it wouldn't surprise anyone if he suddenly returned to that type of production. With that said, it would take an injured Marshawn Lynch to get him enough touches to make some noise.
Staff Rankings
QB List
Martin has and continues to be a frustrating player to own in fantasy. He was terrible last year, ending the season with an awful -22.5% DVOA, good for dead-last among running backs with at least 100 carries last season. Now, he's the backup to Marshawn Lynch and is little more than a somewhat valuable handcuff, given that, if Lynch gets hurt, he'll be behind a better offensive line and in a better offense than he was in with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
