Michel wasn't just the Patriots's last first-round RB pick since Laurence Maroney in 2006. He was their last RB drafted in any capacity since they claimed James White in the fourth round four years ago. It seems safe to assume Bill Belichick has big plans for the bruiser who concluded his Georgia career with 17 TD, four in the College Football Playoff semifinal. Yet a preseason knee procedure and the "Never trust a New England RB" narrative has punctured his draft cost. There's double-digit TD upside if his body and coaching staff cooperates. Martin has cleared 1,400 rushing yards twice in his career, but he has also averaged 2.9 YPC in back-to-back seasons derailed by injuries. He hasn't rushed for 100 yards in a single game since garnering 235 on Nov. 22, 2015. According to ESPN's Bill Barnwell, nobody generated negative expected points on a higher percentage of runs than the Muscle Hamster's 71.7 in 2017. Jon Gruden should quickly see that Marshawn Lynch is the superior veteran RB deserving of Oakland's workload.
Brandon Funston
The Athletic
Back practicing after missing a few weeks with a knee injury - he'll likely be slow played to start the regular season, but don't expect to keep their electric first rounder under wraps for long
Mike Tagliere
FantasyPros
One of the interesting stats I've come across through my offseason research was that rookie running backs who were drafted in the first-round over the last six years finish as a RB1 80 percent of the time. While it's a very small sample size, it just goes to show that when a team invests a first-round pick on a running back, you shouldn't be afraid to roster him. On top of that, he plays for a team that's finished top-three in scoring in every season since 2010. Seriously, that's ridiculous. There are only two things that could get in Michel's way: Fumbles, so please, protect the ball. The other is injury, which no one is immune to. Michel actually needed a small procedure on his knee that knocked him out of training camp for two weeks, so he may be in somewhat of a timeshare to start the season. He needs to move down boards if we hear that his absence will extend into the regular season. It seems like his ADP may move up sooner than I'd hoped, but Martin is one of my favorite late-round sleepers. Word has come out that he looks phenomenal at OTAs. Battling a 32-year-old Marshawn Lynch who has a history of back problems? Playing behind a top-five offensive line? Sign me up. It's rare to find a running back being draft so late who has multiple 1,400-yard rushing seasons on his resume. While it's Lynch's job, it seems like Jon Gruden has a clear role for Martin in the offense.
Bobby Sylvester
FantasyPros
There is, of course, risk in drafting a New England running back, but do you really think Ole' Bill would have drafted one in the first round if he didn't intend on running him to death? Dion Lewis is gone and Michel expects to fill the void that made Lewis an RB1 last season. There is huge upside here if Michel does, in fact, land that type of role and can recover quickly from the minor knee ailment.Martin has been an RB1 multiple times in his career and it wouldn't surprise anyone if he suddenly returned to that type of production. With that said, it would take an injured Marshawn Lynch to get him enough touches to make some noise.

QB List
Michel is a trendy sleeper this year and it's easy to see why. The Patriots spent a first-round pick on him and I'd say it's likely that he'll slip right into Dion Lewis' role from last season. Unfortunately, being that he's a Patriots running back, he's going to be a bit unpredictable, but we've seen New England running backs have a lot of success. It's worth noting though that Michel has suffered a knee injury and will miss the majority of training camp-he's expected to be ready for Week 1, so this likely isn't that big of an issue, but it's worth monitoring. Don't be shocked if Michel gets off to a slow start because he missed training camp.Martin has and continues to be a frustrating player to own in fantasy. He was terrible last year, ending the season with an awful -22.5% DVOA, good for dead-last among running backs with at least 100 carries last season. Now, he's the backup to Marshawn Lynch and is little more than a somewhat valuable handcuff, given that, if Lynch gets hurt, he'll be behind a better offensive line and in a better offense than he was in with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
Jody Smith
FantasyPros
We haven't seen Bill Belichick invest a first-round pick on a running back since 2006. Michel is an intriguing talent who is going to have a sizable role for a team that regularly leads the NFL in rushing scores.
Kevin Wheeler
NFL Mock
Doug Martin has multiple 1,400-yard rushing seasons on his resume and the word on the street is positive in Oakland. He's a nice value at his current ADP (163 overall, RB54 on MFL10). @EricNMoody "Jon Gruden is big on (Doug Martin), who is slated for "a bigger workload than your traditional backup running back." MercuryNews.com Among qualified RBs, Doug Martin was last in success rate (35%), missed tackles forced per carry (.04), and percentage of carries to gain 5+ yards (20%) last year. @GrahamBarfield Doug Martin has had a top-12 RB finish once every three years, he has been trash for the past two. He will have to be very fortunate to even get the opportunity to continue this pattern.
Andrew Erickson
Gridiron Experts
Michel will be a fantasy asset in 2018 because he is the most talented running back on the Patriots. He has big-play ability, is great in pass protection and now plays in a top-tier offense. The Patriots are one of the seven teams in the past two years to produce a top 12 RB despite being a running back by committee. So what value Michel loses in volume as being part of the Patriots crowded backfield, he more than makes up that value by being a vital cog of the Patriots top offense. If the Patriots could get Dion Lewis to an RB1 status in fantasy football leagues, just imagine what they can do with Michel; An upgraded bigger, and more athletic version of Lewis?

Shifty, versatile back has chance to realize potential with Patriots; will have some RB1 weeks Looked done in Tampa Bay but could see a resurgence as Lynch's backup; one of the top handcuffs to own as of today
