Lineups
The Washington Football Team recently cut Derrius Guice and Adrian Peterson, the top two running backs on their depth chart. Antonio Gibson is left as the RB1 on the team, despite Washington depth charts showing J.D. McKissic as the top guy. Gibson has an electric skillset and is capable of playing all three downs. I was thrilled about him as a sleeper when Peterson and Guice were still with the team - now, his ADP has spiked, but he can still be a value in the middle rounds.
Draft Engine
Draft Engine
Duke Johnson's pass-catching role is expected to be similar to what it's been in recent years, even with David Johnson having been acquired in a trade that sent DeAndre Hopkins to Arizona. Duke Johnson's fantasy upside is limited outside of PPR leagues.
Bart Wheeler
Hail to Fantasy Football
Washington cut Adrian Peterson, so Gibson is going to get plenty of opportunities from Day 1. Up!
Mike Tagliere
FantasyPros
There were a lot of people out there who liked Gibson as a sleeper, though I can't get on board now that he's going in the mid rounds. He plays for what might be the lowest-scoring offense in the league, and is still on a depth chart littered with at least three other running backs. Sure, he's going to be used in some sort of hybrid way, but do we really expect two Washington wide receivers to be consistent enough to rely on? He may be an electric player but his offense isn't. I'd rather take a player tied to an exciting offense.Despite continually being one of the most efficient running backs in football, it seems there's no head coach who wants to give Johnson his shot at a bigger role. This will be his sixth season in the NFL and he's never topped 104 carries in a season despite the fact that he's averaged 4.5 yards per carry (4.91 over the last four years) over his career. Now having to deal with David Johnson, whose best attribute is catching passes out of the backfield, it's unlikely Duke has any value with David healthy. However, it needs to be stated that David has played just 22 full games over the last three years and will be 29 years old at the end of the season. Should he miss time, Duke might get the opportunity that we've been waiting for.
Dan Harris
FantasyPros
Gibson looked to have plenty of roadblocks to fantasy-relevance, but with both Derrius Guice and Adrian Peterson being released, his path is far more clear. He isn't going to be a workhorse back - he only had a handful of carries in college and is dangerous as a receiver. But he should see plenty of touches overall and be worthy of being a Flex play in most leagues.Johnson is a fine running back who is always efficient, and yet never earns a large role with his team. He took a back seat to Carlos Hyde last year and now has to contend with David Johnson, a far superior pass-catching back to Hyde. In other words, if Duke Johnson didn't carve out a big role last year, it's tough to see him carving out one this year. He's a high-end handcuff option, but don't expect him to have much independent value absent an injury to David Johnson.
Elisha Twerski
numberFire
At first, the Antonio Gibson hype seemed out of control, but I've warmed up him since. Washington has very little depth at wide receiver behind McLaurin, which means Gibson could see volume in a variety of ways. Despite a lack of rushing volume in college, Gibson should be able to handle some wear. He was in the 68th percentile in BMI (body mass index) among his class in 2020, according to PlayerProfiler. If you want to get titillated, just look at Gibson's Speed Score (99th percentile).
Rob Wilson
The Fantasy Footballers
All aboard the hype train. One of my favorite selections if his ADP holds, but don't expect dynamite numbers right away
Dalton Kates
APEX Fantasy Leagues
Elite athlete at the RB position. Played a bit of WR in college which should allow him to be used a receiver. Only had 77 touches in college so it's a concern that he can be a workhorse despite his workhorse frame of 228 lbs. Lots of upside here if he can get 12-15 touches a game.
Elliot Berkovits
Packer Report
Now that Derrius Guice is no longer with the team, Gibson should slide into the RB2 role behind Adrion Peterson. That bodes well for Gibson as Peterson continues to age and will not factor into the passing game. Gibson's real value lies in PPR scoring but he has legitmate upsides in all formats.Hopes were high for Johnson when he arrived in Houston last year but he never managed to live up to expectations. Now, it looks like he'll be playing second fiddle once again with David Johnson coming in from Arizona. In PPR Johnson has some upside but he's unlikely to be a reliable starter.
Ben Wasley
The Fantasy First Down
Antonio Gibson is stepping into an intriguing opportunity in Washington. While there's a lot of players on the depth chart, no role is clearly assigned at this stage so he has a chance at the vacant pass-catching role and a standard RB role as well. I think it's most likely he has a crack at the Chris Thompson role but will struggle initially with pass protection so it's hard to expect a lot from him in 2020. It's also a chance after the Kelvin Harmon injury he shifts outside but I don't believe that's the most likely outcome. He does have huge upside if things fall perfectly for him though. It's frustrating how a back who consistently has amazing metrics in Duke Johnson continually falls behind mediocre runners like Carlos Hyde. That certainly won't change this year either, with David Johnson the clear lead back and likely to steal some receptions as well. If David stays healthy all season there's little chance Duke is even startable. If the injury-prone DJ goes down though, it could be open season for the former Brown. I like him as a handcuff and desperation PPR starter but little else as a borderline RB3 finish is likely in his future.
Kyle Yates
FantasyPros
Gibson only saw 77 total touches in college due to playing behind guys like Tony Pollard and Darrell Henderson at Memphis. However, he made every touch count with his explosiveness and top-end speed. Gibson's electric with the ball in his hands and was used all over the formation in college, which I expect for that to continue in Washington. This coaching staff clearly has a plan for him with where they selected him in the Draft and I expect Gibson's ADP to rise significantly in the next few weeks as we start to hear more about how he'll be utilized in the offense. With the addition of David Johnson, there are a lot of unknowns here in Houston and this backfield. Duke should remain the pass-catching specialist, while David carries the ball primarily in-between the tackles. If we see David struggle again with injury though, Duke could be in line for a huge workload.
Kevin Wheeler
