Lineups
Philip Rivers has heavily utilized running backs in the passing game for the entirety of his career. Nyheim Hines will fill the third-down role for Indianapolis and he has 107 catches over the past two seasons. The Colts likely won't be getting to third down too often as their offense should be efficient, and they won't be trailing in many games, but you can count on Frank Reich to find ways to get Hines involved.
Zachary Hanshew
FantasyPros
The pass-catching specialist has brought in 107 receptions through his first two seasons in the league, and the Colts' coaching staff is reportedly planning to utilize his skillset as a receiver this season. The arrival of Jonathan Taylor crowds the backfield, but there's a good chance Hines still has a role on third down or in hurry-up situations, making him a viable late-round target in PPR formats.
Draft Engine
Draft Engine
Duke Johnson's pass-catching role is expected to be similar to what it's been in recent years, even with David Johnson having been acquired in a trade that sent DeAndre Hopkins to Arizona. Duke Johnson's fantasy upside is limited outside of PPR leagues.
John Hesterman
Dynasty League Football
The only scramble Philip Rivers has must be eggs, because it's not on the football field. His lack of mobility has annually led to a high target total to his running backs. Jonathan Taylor will be taking over the lead rusher role sooner rather than later and Marlon Mack is a sub-par receiving back, leaving Nyheim Hines as a late-round gem in drafts this season.
Mike Tagliere
FantasyPros
Despite continually being one of the most efficient running backs in football, it seems there's no head coach who wants to give Johnson his shot at a bigger role. This will be his sixth season in the NFL and he's never topped 104 carries in a season despite the fact that he's averaged 4.5 yards per carry (4.91 over the last four years) over his career. Now having to deal with David Johnson, whose best attribute is catching passes out of the backfield, it's unlikely Duke has any value with David healthy. However, it needs to be stated that David has played just 22 full games over the last three years and will be 29 years old at the end of the season. Should he miss time, Duke might get the opportunity that we've been waiting for. There are some who are pointing at Hines as the primary beneficiary to Philip Rivers' arrival in Indianapolis, but I'm not one of them. Did we forget that the Colts dealt with tons of injuries last year and Hines still wound up with just 96 touches on the year? This is still the same coaching staff who didn't put him on the field over a guy like Jonathan Williams. Now you add in Jonathan Taylor and Michael Pittman, and he's going to get a bigger role? Nah. Let someone else draft him.
Elliot Berkovits
Packer Report
Hopes were high for Johnson when he arrived in Houston last year but he never managed to live up to expectations. Now, it looks like he'll be playing second fiddle once again with David Johnson coming in from Arizona. In PPR Johnson has some upside but he's unlikely to be a reliable starter.Hines once again finds himself in one of the most confusing backfields in all of football. There is Marlon Mack and 2nd-round rookie Jonathan Taylor to compete with which will not be an easy task. On the plus side, his new QB, Philip Rivers, loves throwing to his RB's. If RIvers and Hines build a connection early, Hines could be a major steal in PPR formats.
Dan Harris
FantasyPros
Johnson is a fine running back who is always efficient, and yet never earns a large role with his team. He took a back seat to Carlos Hyde last year and now has to contend with David Johnson, a far superior pass-catching back to Hyde. In other words, if Duke Johnson didn't carve out a big role last year, it's tough to see him carving out one this year. He's a high-end handcuff option, but don't expect him to have much independent value absent an injury to David Johnson.
Kyle Yates
FantasyPros
With the addition of David Johnson, there are a lot of unknowns here in Houston and this backfield. Duke should remain the pass-catching specialist, while David carries the ball primarily in-between the tackles. If we see David struggle again with injury though, Duke could be in line for a huge workload.Hines is a fantastic receiver out of the backfield, but with both Marlon Mack and Jonathan Taylor ahead of him on the depth chart, he's unlikely to see many carries on the ground. This means he could be a valuable FLEX option in Full PPR leagues, but he's going to lose production in any other format.
Ben Wasley
The Fantasy First Down
It's frustrating how a back who consistently has amazing metrics in Duke Johnson continually falls behind mediocre runners like Carlos Hyde. That certainly won't change this year either, with David Johnson the clear lead back and likely to steal some receptions as well. If David stays healthy all season there's little chance Duke is even startable. If the injury-prone DJ goes down though, it could be open season for the former Brown. I like him as a handcuff and desperation PPR starter but little else as a borderline RB3 finish is likely in his future. After the high of Philip Rivers signing with the Colts, Nyheim Hines has crumbled back to earth with the Jonathan Taylor signing. Taylor is a good pass catcher and will certainly chip into the receptions for Hines and surely reduce his carries too. He goes from a PPR flex option to no more than a speculative gamble/bench fodder.

David Johnson now overlaps his receiving role... ugh.Was set to be a huge riser w/ Philip Rivers, who peppers his RBs in the passing game... but J.Taylor may hinder this, esp if he pushes Mack to the 3rd-down RB role
