Fantasy Football Advice
Hunter Henry will return from a torn ACL he suffered last summer. Unlike players who suffered that injury during the season, Henry will be 100% to start the year. Henry put together two decent seasons before the injury, serving as both a receiving option and a red zone threat, even while Gates was still with the team. With Gates now long gone, Henry should be the teams top red zone option. This is also an offense that loves to throw the football. In 2017 they ranked 6th and 3rd in passing TD's and yards respectively. Last season those numbers were 8th and 11th. The Chargers have seemingly drawn the short straw on injuries in each of the past three seasons. In 2016 Keenan Allen tore his ACL, in 2017 Mike Williams injured his back and was limited to just one start, then Henry tore his ACL last season. At least for now, The Chargers offense is fully healthy. The core of Gordon/Allen/Henry/Williams is one of the best in the league, so they should be amongst the league leaders in TD's scored. While that's a positive for Henry (top red zone option on a top scoring offense), the plethora of options does mean that there will be some down weeks for all of these players. There are so many mouths to feed that sometimes they are going to under perform. At the end of the day, Henry is a top TE option, and someone I'd target in the middle rounds. With Odell being traded to the Browns, Engram once again finds himself as the top option in the passing game. He'll still need to compete with Shepard, Tate, Saquon...and...maybe...Corey Coleman for targets, but he's going to get all he can handle. He's also going to be used heavily in the red zone. Engram has averaged just under one red zone target per game in his two year career, but that should go up in 2019. Not only his it his third season (the general breakout season for TE's), but aside from Saquon, he's the only real red zone threat they have. Tate has never been a red zone guy, and while Shepard was given a lot of targets inside the 5 last season, we shouldn't expect him to see many while Engram is healthy. Ingram is one of the few receivers with 80/1000/10 upside.
Bobby Sylvester
FantasyPros
It is tough to know just how strong Henry will be in his return from the injury but seeing that he was prepared to play in the playoffs, it seems likely that he will be nearly back to 100%. Prior to his injury, Henry was every bit as efficient as Rob Gronkowski and Travis Kelce at the top of the league. Now that he is actually the starter and should see a major bump in targets, he may just leap into that top tight end tier.Engram was injured for part of the season, but when he was healthy, he was solid once again, ranking 7th among all tight ends with 9.4 half-PPR points per game. The draw in Engram, of course, is the fact that Odell Beckham left in free agency, and while he has always been great, Golden Tate fills in and is also a target hog. When Engram had so many targets two years ago, Roger Lewis, was the #2 wideout so it is a much different scenario now than it was then.
Mike Tagliere
FantasyPros
Prior to tearing his ACL, Henry's career arc was moving in the right direction. His per-target production is through the roof, as he's seen 115 targets in his career that have amounted to 81 receptions for 1,057 yards and 12 touchdowns. By comparison, Zach Ertz saw 156 targets in 2018 and finished with 1,163 yards and 8 touchdowns.Remember when Engram finished his rookie season as the No. 5 tight end? Well, he did that because the volume was there. He saw 115 targets that season because of the injuries to Odell Beckham and Brandon Marshall. Those guys are both gone, and while Sterling Shepard and Golden Tate remain, those guys aren't going to see the target share of Beckham. Not only did Engram's target-share dip last year, but he also dealt with some injuries, leading him to finish outside the top-10 in his sophomore season. The expectation should be that he'll see 100-plus targets in 2019, which is something only 4-5 tight ends can say.
Derek Lofland
FantasyPros
The nice thing about Henry playing in the playoffs is that we know he is healthy and he will be available for all OTA activities. Henry should bounce back as a TE1 coming off the ACL injury in May last year.Engram really struggled early in the year when QB Eli Manning was not playing well. If they can find an effective quarterback in the NFL Draft, Engram has huge bounce-back potential.
