FantasyPros
The 2019 rookie finished with a 36/311/2 receiving line on 47 targets in his first season, posting nearly identical numbers to veteran Kyle Rudolph in almost every statistical category except one: scoring. Rudolph found himself in the end zone six times, though he saw just one more target than Smith. Rudolph is on the back-nine of his career, and the ascending Smith could pass him on the depth chart as soon as this season. Minnesota's passing attack isn't prolific, but Smith is capable of posting strong numbers if he gets a bump in opportunity.
Draft Engine
Draft Engine
It's difficult to get excited about a player coming off a season in which he failed to surpass five receptions or 60 yards while scoring only two touchdowns over 18 games, including playoffs. While Smith's fantasy upside is limited with Kyle Rudolph still on the roster, the 2019 second-round pick is expected to play a bigger role in Minnesota's offense in his second season.
Bart Wheeler
Hail to Fantasy Football
With questions about Justin Jefferson and the #2 receiving option in general, moving Irv up a bit. He could be the guy!
Kevin Tompkins
Fighting Chance Fantasy
With the 3rd easiest schedule from Weeks 1-8 and camp reports that Irv Smith is playing off the line in 12 personnel, Smith and Rudolph for me are ships passing in the night. It's easy to spot this breakout and you don't have to spend much to find out. He's a sneaky candidate to be the non-Adam Thielen leader in targets for the Vikings in 2020.
Ben Wasley
The Fantasy First Down
Irv Smith is starting to take over from Kyle Rudolph as the tight end to own in Minnesota. A second year breakout is certainly on the cards for the Vikings youngster and given Stefon Diggs is now out of town, there's every chance Smith gets a solid target share and that's worth betting on very late in drafts.Greg Olsen arrives in Seattle in a strange situation. Will Dissly has looked very impressive when fit and Jacob Hollister every managed to thrive in the Seahawks offense. Now that duo is joined by Olsen along with rookies Colby Parkinson and Stephen Sullivan. It certainly looks like from that mess, the elder statesman Olsen will emerge. Olsen's contract will cost $7 million against the cap and he's clearly still got it, finishing TE13 in the nightmarish Panthers attack last year. Clearly this is a great situation (Dissly and Hollister combined would've been TE8 last year) and Olsen is the guy so take a gamble on him! Still not convinced? Well his ADP has him going at the end of the 15th round! How could you possibly go wrong?
Mike Tagliere
FantasyPros
I'm not certain how many people know Smith saw just one fewer target than his teammate Kyle Rudolph in 2019, but that was the case. The difference was their touchdowns, as Rudolph scored six times compared to Smith's two touchdowns. Will that change in 2020? Well, it wasn't due to lack of opportunity, as Smith saw 10 targets in the red zone compared to Rudolph's 11 targets. Touchdowns are a very fickle thing and they can flip-flop this year. Smith is the one ascending up, while Rudolph is moving towards the end of his tenure.Based on where Olsen's targets took place last year, he scored 20.5 fewer fantasy points than the average tight end would've, which was the worst mark in football, just ahead of Trey Burton. He's now 35 years old and wants to go to the booth soon enough. He was the Seahawks insurance to Will Dissly. Once they know Dissly is healthy, it's back to fantasy irrelevance for Olsen. If Dissly isn't ready for the start of the year, Olsen could have some streaming appeal.
Frank Bonincontri
Fantasy Wire HQ
If the Vikes use Smith out of the slot and out wide, it would be a great way to create matchups and scheme him into scoring plays. I am hoping the team delivers on this potential.I don't expect Olsen to make it the entire season. I am more interested in scooping Will Dissly late and sitting him on the bench for the inevitable Olsen foot injury, then owning a TE1 in my league
Elliot Berkovits
Packer Report
Irv Smith Jr. is one of many young talented TE's that could be in for a breakout season. There's only one problem when it comes to Smith - Kyle Rudolph. Even while they produced nearly identical totals in reception and yards, it was Rudolph catching all the TDs. As long as Rudolph is there it's going to be tough for Smith to get consistent work, but I think his upside is worth a late-round flier in deeper leagues.Greg Olsen is now a Seahawk and will get to catch passes from Russell Wilson which is great but what's not great is Olsen's injury history, age, and competition. The Seahawks have two talented TE's in Will Dissly and Jacob Hollister and Olsen has been extremely prone to injury lately. I'd rather draft some of the younger guys going in this range than Olsen.
Kyle Yates
FantasyPros
Unfortunately, the opportunity doesn't exactly match the talent for Irv Smith...at least for right now. Rudolph is still ahead of him on this depth chart and this isn't an offense that's projected to have a high passing volume. Smith's unlikely to have any fantasy relevance in 2020, unless Rudolph were to miss time. He can remain on your waiver wire for the time being.Olsen might have enough in the tank for one final season in the NFL, but it's unlikely to amount to much from a fantasy perspective. Even if Olsen sees 80-plus targets, he lacks the athleticism now to turn them into anything of value for fantasy football. He'll be a fringe TE2/TE3 this season.

2019: Played 53.4% of snaps in the slot, 76.6% Catch Rate, 107.7 QBR, target share: 7.6/ 20.5% Irv Smith Jr. had 47 targets in 2019 as a 21-year-old rookie. The Vikings are likely to pass more next year and lack proven receiving weapons. TEs who were 21-year-old rookies record a TE1 season almost 60% of the time in Year 2. @JackMiller02

Smith played a fair amount in his rookie season, but he's still second fiddle to Kyle Rudolph. Although the two tight ends essentially split targets last year, Smith was used fairly closer to the line of scrimmage and almost never had a chance to break big plays. He may see a bit more usage now with plenty of vacated targets in the absence of Stefon Diggs, but he's nothing better than a low-end TE2.Despite getting up there in age, Olsen showed he still had some gas left in the tank in 2019, finishing as the 13th-ranked tight end in 1/2 PPR formats despite playing just 14 games and scoring just two touchdowns. Seattle isn't a bad place for tight ends, but with Will Dissly expected back and Jacob Hollister still on the roster, it's unlikely that Olsen will see his usual number of targets. He's worth drafting in leagues that give bonus points to tight ends but he's outside the TE1 range in standard-sized leagues.

If Will Dissly's injury lingers or he goes down again, Olsen landed in an absolute prime location where he'd carve out top-12 value. For now, the room feels a little congested

Is anyone going to look and see that Kyle Rudolph only out targeted Irv by 1 target despite playing 181 more snaps? Rudolph's playing time also slowly decreased over the course of the season.
