Breaking Football
Austin Hooper was the TE6 for ATL last year. Hurst is the better athlete and should have that role, which instantly puts him in the top-10 conversation.Delanie Walker is finally gone, opening the door for a top-10 year for the uber-athletic Smith. He's tough to trust, but he could explode with an expanded role.
Draft Engine
Draft Engine
Acquired by Atlanta to fill the void created by Austin Hooper's departure, Hurst could emerge as a fantasy asset on a team devoid of passing-game weapons beyond WRs Julio Jones and Calvin Ridley. After catching six passes for 97 scoreless yards while playing behind Delanie Walker over the first six games of 2019, Smith played a much bigger role once Walker suffered a season-ending ankle injury. In a Divisional Round blowout of Baltimore, Smith tipped the ball back to himself in the corner of the end zone for one of the most impressive scores in recent memory.
Kevin Tompkins
Fighting Chance Fantasy
Not on Jonnu Smith for 2020. Not sure where the receiving work comes from when he's only running 240 routes out of the 701 snaps he received in 2019. He's basically a Ferrari Nick Boyle or Jeff Heuerman. For context, Mark Andrews played 457 snaps but ran 295 routes, and blocked a total of FOUR times in 2019. Jonnu has been on this 22%-24% blocking clip as far back as when Delanie Walker was still with the Titans in 2018. Unless something drastically changes with the amount of routes run for Jonnu Smith, we'll never see a true breakout. For 2020, Smith is player I'll pass on even in the late stages of drafts. Much more upside to be had with the Herndon/Irv Smith tier.
Bart Wheeler
Hail to Fantasy Football
He has a great shot at a top-5 finish in this Atlanta offense. If you want him, you'll have to pick him among the first ten TEs.
John Hesterman
Dynasty League Football
Smith has the starting role all to himself heading into 2020, and an accurate, efficient QB targeting him. All of the ingredients point to a potential breakout season for the young tight end. If you're punting the position in your draft, an upside pick like Jonnu could pay off nicely by the end of the season.
Ben Wasley
The Fantasy First Down
The Falcons offense remains a passing juggernaut with Julio Jones, Calvin Ridley, Austin Hooper, the slot receivers and the running backs all on pace for 100+ targets in 2019. While Austin Hooper, Mo Sanu and Devonta Freeman are gone, Hayden Hurst, Russell Gage and Todd Gurley arrive in their place. It's fair to suggest more from Gurley compared to last season's backfield mess and a breakout from Calvin Ridley is entirely likely, but Russell Gage isn't a top receiver and that leaves a massive pile of targets for the tight ends. While that's no guarantee, it's hard to see how Hayden Hurst could not finish as a top 12 tight end. That makes it even more incredible that he's available in the double digit rounds. Hurst is an absolute steal and one of fantasy's biggest sleepers at this stage of the pre-season.The Titans were extraordinarily efficient in 2019, yet Jonnu Smith remained barely involved in the offense as Derrick Henry, Ryan Tannehill and A.J. Brown became fantasy studs. If TE19 is the best Smith can manage when everything went right, it's very hard to see him having such a bump that he jumps to fantasy prominence. He's not worth drafting in 2020 in the majority of leagues.
Mike Tagliere
FantasyPros
When projecting Matt Ryan for somewhere in the neighborhood of 620-plus pass attempts, you need to disburse them somewhere. The Falcons didn't even make an offer to Austin Hooper but decided to spend a second-round pick to acquire Hurst from the Ravens. It's clear they view him as someone who can step right into Hooper's role. It may take some time for Hurst to get acclimated to the new offense with a shortened offseason, but Hooper's role was massive last year. He totaled 97 targets in just 13 games, which was a pace of 119 targets on a full 16-game season. Did you know that of the 116 tight ends who've seen more than 85 targets the last 10 years, that 97 of them finished as top-12 tight ends? That's an 83.6 percent success rate and it seems highly likely that Hurst is going to hit that. Move that number up to 90 targets and it's a 92.4 percent success rate. One of my bold predictions this year is that Hurst finishes as a top-five fantasy tight end. Don't think he was bad because he was playing behind Mark Andrews, one of the best tight ends in the league. Many compared Smith to someone like Delanie Walker back when he was drafted in 2017. We saw shades of that and even heard Bill Belichick give him props as one of the top tight ends in the league prior to their playoff matchup. Still, he's going to need more than 3-5 targets per game to get into the TE1 conversation. Despite Walker going down for the year, Smith saw more than five targets just twice all season and finished with 44 on the year. With the offense still projected for less than 500 pass attempts, it'll be difficult for Smith to truly break out. He should be considered a strong streamer in good matchups.
Frank Bonincontri
Fantasy Wire HQ
Will Hurst step in and become the 2019 Austin Hooper? No, but he will take on a solid target share and will likely be the sleeper of the fantasy TE position group. Just because he was not featured exclusively in BAltimore doesnt mean he is a sub-par tight endIt is a Derrick Henry featured offense but hoping Smith steps on the scene in a big way for 2020.
Rob Wilson
The Fantasy Footballers
Under the radar TE that can be taken for little cost in most home leagues. Top target for those waiting at TE
Elliot Berkovits
Packer Report
Hurst is one of my favorite TE sleepers for the 2020 season. He's a former 1st-round pick which means he definitely has the talent, he just never had the opportunity in Baltimore. That will change in Atlanta where throughout Matt Ryan's career, the TE position has done very well. Whether it be Tony Gonzalez or Austin Hooper, if you're a talented TE, Ryan is going to target you. If you punt on TE, Hurst is a great late-round option.Jonnu Smith was everyone's favorite breakout candidate last year and even with the Titans playing great football, Smith was rarely involved. He finished the season with only 35 receptions, 439 yards, and three TDs. He still has the talent to be a viable fantasy TE, but I have to see it before I trust him as my weekly starter.
Derek Lofland
FantasyPros
Hurst has never had more than 349 yards receiving or 2 touchdowns in a season, but this is his chance to breakout as a starting tight end playing with Matt Ryan. He is a TE2 with TE1 upside due to his great quarterback situation.
Dan Harris

Hurst rarely played even half the snaps with Baltimore, but he was sixth in yards per target last year and was PFF's eighth-highest graded tight end. Dirk Koetter's offense likes to target the tight end, as Austin Hooper saw 60 targets through eight games last year and Tony Gonzalez saw 118 targets per season under Koetter. Add in that Hurst is likely to run routes out of the slot this year and Hurst's first year with the Falcons should be a big one.Smith is one of the more intriguing names to be outside of the TE1 range. He is one of the most efficient tight ends in the game, and has a clear road to targets at the position now that Delanie Walker is no longer in his way. The problem is that there aren't all that many targets to go around in Tennessee, and Smith's targets have rarely come around the end zone. If that changes, then he's certainly got a shot at being fantasy-relevant. For now, however, he should be drafted as a TE1 only in 15-team leagues or larger or those that reward bonus points for tight ends.

There's no bigger disparity in the NFL right now between upside and ADP than Hurst. Hurst is currently going outside the top-12 tight ends, but has a very good chance and path to finishing as a top-5 option at the end of the season. Hurst is a talented tight end who is finally going to be given an opportunity in Atlanta's dynamic offense. He's a home-run pick in the late rounds of your draft. If you're looking for a player who's going to be a steal in the later rounds of your draft, look no further than Smith. He should easily be second on this team in targets and he has the talent and athleticism to make it count. If you don't get the top two or three options at the tight end position, it's my personal recommendation to wait it out and snag Smith in the later rounds.

Former first round pick, missed opportunity in Baltimore, MAJOR upside in Atlanta. Hurst had 62 targets total in 2 years while playing for Baltimore, 43 catches, 512 yards, and 3 Touchdowns. Austin Hooper last year had 97 targets, 75 catches 787 yards and 6 touchdowns. The targets and opportunity are their in Atlanta for Hurst to crush. @NickSarnelliAll you have to do is follow the bread crumbs to see that Jonnu Smith is the next big time TE in dynasty. -- @AnOutragedJew

ATL just traded a 2nd round pick for Hurst, knowing that he's been a poor blocker his first 2 years in the league. Below AVG on 389 RUNBLKs, and just 8 PASSBLKs to his name. His poor blocking is good news for how it appears they might plan on using him. Hooper was rarely blocking, and was in for twice the amount of pass snaps as Hurst last year.Steadily increased his production over his first 3 years, while sitting behind Delanie Walker. He might not have performed as well as we'd like with Walker having a limited role in 2019 but it was his first year truly starting. Showed enough flashes and is also another hyper athletic TE to target late, on a team that lacks weapons in the passing game aside from AJ Brown. Targeted on 21% of routes run in 2019. ADP of TE17 in redraft. Walker and his 31 TE targets have left the building. 8th in yards per route run among TEs with a minimum of 40 targets. While not on the same level of production as Kittle, was just above him in % of YAC in 2019, 94th percentile burst score allows him to pull away after the catch 9th in YAC with half as much opportunity to produce it as the most of the guys ahead of him, which means he was 2nd in YAC/REC, only behind Noah Fant, and just ahead of George Kittle 7th in % of targets caught. So he is ready to make the most off potentially limited targets, by catching nearly 80% of them, and then has elite YAC ability when he does get it, on a team with underrated QB play, and The TE room finally all to himself?

Koetter = Perfect scheme for Hurst to rebound and escape Andrews' shadow. No one uses the TE better than ATL w/ Koetter there.Delanie Walker's release could unlock more usage for one of the NFL's most athletic TEs
