I'm not sure many realize just how difficult it would be for Jefferson to repeat his 2020 season. Not only was he a rookie, which is amazing in it's own right, but to finish with 1,400 yards on just 125 targets is ridiculous. How did that happen? Well, he caught 70.4 percent of his targets... at 15.9 yards a pop. No other wide receiver in the history of the game has totaled 1,400 yards on 125 or less targets. Bottom line... he needs more targets if he's going to live up to expectations because that's unlikely to happen again. With the defense getting back on track with Danielle Hunter (and adding in free agency), do the Vikings trend back to their run-heavy ways? Adam Thielen is a year older, but the chemistry between him and Kirk Cousins is magical. The sky is the limit for Jefferson with his talent, but will the targets follow? Don't forget this is the same team that held Stefon Diggs to 112 or less targets in 4-of-5 seasons. You'd think that when a team spends the No. 12 overall pick on a wide receiver, they'd actually find ways to use him, right? That didn't happen with Ruggs. There wasn't a game in 2020 where he saw more than five targets or caught more than three receptions. We did see the Raiders move on from Nelson Agholor, but he was quickly replaced by John Brown. It's no secret that Brown has struggled to stay healthy, which could be the door Ruggs needs to get more targets. He shouldn't need an injury to get targets, but if this Raiders coaching staff told us anything last year, it's that they don't know how to best utilize Ruggs.
Dan Harris
FantasyPros
Of all the rookie receivers last year, Ruggs looked to be in perhaps the best spot to provide immediate value given the truncated offseason. Most expected him to be the recipient of quick passes and just use his speed where he didn't need much time to develop a rapport with Derek Carr. Unfortunately, the Raiders completely misused Ruggs, as he had an aDOT of 17.4, second highest in the game among receivers with at least 30 targets, and was targeted downfield almost non-stop. Injuries were a part of it, of course, as Ruggs played more on the outside after Bryan Edwards got hurt, but it never seemed like the Raiders understood Ruggs' strengths. With another offseason, hopefully they will, and given the draft capital used on him, the team is surely looking to find ways for him to succeed this year. Don't draft him as a fantasy starter, but he has plenty of upside for your bench.
Kyle Yates
FantasyPros
How are we feeling about Justin Jefferson heading into 2021, folks?! Wow! Coming off of a truly ridiculous rookie season, the arrow can't be pointing any higher heading into year two. Jefferson put up an absurd 70% Catch Rate on 125 targets with a 15.9 Yards Per Reception total in his rookie season, which is one of the most unbelievable stats from last season. Despite barely being involved in the offense the first two weeks of the season, Jefferson finished as the WR6 and there's very little reason to doubt that he can finish in that range again in 2021. Based on his previous performance, you're absolutely going to have to pay a premium price for Jefferson in fantasy this season if you want him on your roster. However, if you want to build your fantasy roster around the stud wideout, you're not going to get any complaints from this analyst. He's that good. My Very Early Projection: 93-1351-8 receiving.Last season, Ruggs had an ADOT (Average Depth of Target) of 17.3. For the skillset that Ruggs brings to the table, this is a gross misuse of his abilities. Ruggs thrives on being able to take short passes and then create after the catch with his speed and explosiveness, which targeting him deep downfield does not allow him to do. This season, with the addition of Brown to play on the outside, we should see Ruggs moved back into the slot. This will allow him to operate underneath and create after the catch, but it's putting a lot of faith in a coaching staff to use him the correct way. At his current ADP though, Ruggs is absolutely worth adding to your roster in hopes that he can be utilized properly. We'll just have to wait and see if it actually happens.
Benjamin Klotz
Touchdown Squad
I'm still not entirely convinced on Jefferson yet. The talent here is undeniable but his efficiency last year looks too good to be true... and that's basically because it is. His aDOT (15.9 yards (!!)) and Catch Rate (>70%) were both at levels proven to be unsustainable. While I can see Jefferson eating a little bit into Thielen's target share in Year 2, it's not to the extent that would justify his current price as a top-10 WR. I'm comfortable taking him anywhere in the 4th round as one of the better WR2s in the league, but the reality remains it's not even clear if he's the WR1 on his own team - so I'm not willing to make him the WR1 on mine.
Derek Lofland
FantasyPros
Jefferson was incredible in his rookie season with 125 targets, 88 receptions, 1,400 yards and 7 touchdowns. He should be an absolute star in his second year and a solid WR1 option.
Mark Ringo
Sleepers and Busts
88 receptions 1,400 yards 7 TDs as a rookie! Justin Jefferson is movin' on up, to the East side, of Ringo's deluxe ranking, up high! Moving on up, to the Top 5 (of my WR ranks.), finally got a piece of the (fantasy) pie! That's a reference to the sit com The Jeffersons theme song for you youngsters out there. He's a PPR machine and he's only going to get better. Wesi!!!Ruggs rookie season was a major disappointment. In fairness to him Jon Gruden's offesne is very complex and covid protocols hurt a lot of rookies with their development. A full offseason should help 2020 rookies like Ruggs. He also battled injuries, hurting his knee in week 1. Ruggs still has world class speed. He's a threat to score anytime he touches the ball. The concern is he doesn't get the ball enough. His ADP is pretty cheap (12th round), but if he doesn't get more targets it won't matter. Worth a shot based on his talent & affordable price tag.
Tim Petropoulos
BRoto Fantasy
In his first NFL season after dominating college football in 2019, Justin Jefferson hauled in 88 catches for 7 TDs and an all-time rookie record 1400 receiving yards. This was good for a WR6 overall finish in half-PPR scoring, ahead of guys like DK Metcalf, Mike Evans, Allen Robinson, etc. Jefferson was also the first rookie WR named an All-Pro since Randy Moss in 1998, he was only the third WR ever to make the pro bowl at 21 years old (Moss in '98 and Amari Cooper in '15), he finished tied for first in the NFL with 23 receptions over 20-yards, and he is now second all time in yards per game for a rookie (87.5), only behind Odell Beckham Jr. (108.8). For the 2nd season in a row, QB Kirk Cousins finished in the top-7 in True Throw Value. True Throw Value strips outside factors and minimizes randomness by looking at a QB's full volume and production to find their efficiency on a micro-level. In 2020, Kirk Cousins finished second overall behind only Aaron Rodgers. Despite his elite efficiency, Cousins attempted a pass only 516 times in 2020, good for 15th in the NFL. Jefferson, who was the target on 125 of those pass attempts, was only 16th in the NFL in targets. To put that into perspective, Stefon Diggs and Adam Thielen each recorded 149+ targets in 2018, their last season fully-healthy season together. Under Gary Kubiak last season, the Vikings were a run-first team, passing the ball on just 53% of snaps, limiting the opportunity for Jefferson and teammate Adam Thielen, who both finished as WR1's regardless. Now with Klint Kubiak, 33, taking over as OC, new opportunities could be on the horizon. In addition to working under his dad, Klint Kubiak has worked with Kliff Kingsbury and Kevin Stefanski, two young coaches who have had offensive success in their young careers. Klint Kubiak also has a very close relationship with Kirk Cousins, as he has spent the last 2 seasons as the Vikings QB Coach. "If we don't evolve, then we'll be left in the dust," Kubiak told Vikings.com. "That's every team in the NFL, always trying to find ways to evolve your scheme and trying to make yourself less predictable."
