Mark Ringo Sleepers and Busts | In a prove it a year, Jalen Hurts came up big time. Not just for fantasy owners, but for the Eagle Nation. He did everything possible to win them a title, falling just short in a gut-wrenching loss to Kansas City and former Philadelphia head coach, Andy Reid. The good news is most of the same crew returns. Philly has a solid o-line and along with some great WRs in A.J. Brown and Devonta Smith. The concerns are the loss of offensive coordinator Shane Steichen who left to become the head coach of Indianapolis and the schedule. Last year the Eagles benefitted by playing some less-than-formidable defenses in Detroit, Chicago, Minnesota, Arizona, Houston etc. This year won't be as easy with San Francisco, N.Y. Jets, Miami, Buffalo, etc. along with their usual NFC East foes on the docket. Dallas added DT Mazi Smith a run-stuffing specialist out of Michigan while sack monster Chase Young should be fully healthy for the Commanders. With a current ADP of QB 3 there's very little margin for error for Hurts. In addition, it would not surprise me to see other talented QBs (for ex. Lamar Jackson, Burrow, Herbert, DeShaun Watson, & possibly Anthony Richardson) have good years and leapfrog Hurts in the 2023 fantasy results. For those reasons, I'm sliding Hurts down my rankings a bit compared to his ADP, although he's talented enough to make me look even more foolish than usual. My readers are like how is that even possible? Trust me, it's possible. Haha! | Last year I had Justin Fields on my bust list. Yeah, that turned out well haha! Note in 2021 Mark Ringo ranked 203 out of like 230 analysts in the Fantasy Pros Draft Accuracy Contest! Hey, anyone can finish first, it takes real talent to be that awful at ranking players haha! What can I say, I'm a natural haha! Anyway, I digress, speaking of talent, it wasn't that I thought Fields lacked talent. It was because of the situation he was in. New coaching staff, a new playbook, and a terrible offensive line. I thought he'd be running for his life. I was at least right about that. I was wrong in that no one caught him and he didn't get beaten to a pulp by 300 lb. defensive linemen haha! Anyway, the Bears' offensive line should be better in 2023. They signed Nate Davis in free agency and then took promising young rookie Darnell Wright in the 1st round of the draft. Wright stonewalled Crimson Tide star DE Will Anderson when Tennessee played Alabama last season. One thing about Fields, he is very accurate. He needs to improve his blitz recognition and get the ball out quicker though. (Trivia question, who was the last QB to throw for over 4,000 yards for the Bears? Answer- at the bottom.) The additions of D.J. Moore and Robert Tonyan should also help. Fields' current ADP is at QB 6. That's a bit high for me. I like a few other QBs better. I'd expect Fields' rushing attempts to go down. If that happens, he'll need to make up the difference by passing for more yards and TDs. We shall see. Answer- Never. It would have been Mark Ringo, but he's too busy contending for titles in fantasy football accuracy contests haha!! |
Ellis Johnson True North Fantasy Football | Jalen Hurts is basically Josh Allen Lite. You can argue he is the more dynamic runner, but lacks the arm talent of Allen. Having said that, he is a prolific passer and has a plethora of weapons. The only reason I have him down at five, is I expect his 13 rushing touchdowns will not repeat, meaning he'll have to pass for more than last year's 22 touchdowns to crack the top three again. | Honestly, I'm skeptical of Fields' passing attack. Despite my love for Lamar and his passing ability, I have not seen enough from Fields to project that development. Although D.J. Moore helps this offense a lot, his rushing ability is what ranks him here. The real question is can he pull a Hurts and have double-digit rushing touchdowns? If he does he's elite, because I struggle to see him surpassing the 20-passing TD mark. |
Brandon Funston The Athletic | Passing game improvement, along with elite QB rush numbers (including unstoppable goal line keepers), vaulted him into QB Top 3 in 2022
Pat Fitzmaurice FantasyPros | Hurts gave us a taste of his fantasy potential in 2021 and then cooked a seven-course meal in 2022, improving his passing numbers across the board, providing enormous rushing value and leading all quarterbacks with 25.6 fantasy points per game. Hurts was a highly efficient passer in his second full season as a starter, completing 66.5% of his throws at 8.0 yards per attempt, with a miniscule 1.3% INT rate. But it's the running game where Hurts really makes his bones. He ran for 13 touchdowns last year and has 23 TD runs over the last two seasons. Hurts has topped 750 rushing yards in each of the last two seasons, averaging 51.5 rushing yards per game over that span. He plays behind one of the best offensive lines in football and can throw to three terrific targets: A.J. Brown, DeVonta Smith and Dallas Goedert. Hurts belongs on the top QB tier along with Josh Allen and Patrick Mahomes. | Justin Fields was electric as a runner in 2022. If he can significantly boost his passing numbers in 2023, look out. Fields ran for 1,143 yards and eight touchdowns last season, averaging a league-high 7.1 yards per carry. He ran for 178 yards and a touchdown against the Dolphins in Week 9, breaking the single-game rushing record for a quarterback -- then ran for 147 yards and two touchdowns against the Lions the following week. But Fields averaged 149.5 passing yards per game and topped the 200-yard mark only twice in 2022. In his defense, Fields was saddled by a mediocre offensive line and arguably the worst WR group in the league. The Bears have already traded for WR D.J. Moore and figure to bolster their offensive line in the NFL Draft, giving Fields a chance to make the same sort of quantum leap that Jalen Hurts made in 2022. |
Derek Lofland FantasyPros | Hurts had solid passing numbers with 3,701 yards passing and 22 passing TDs, but his 760 yards rushing and 13 rushing TDs added to those passing numbers make him an elite QB1. | Fields threw the ball only 318 times and finished with just 2,242 yards passing and 17 passing TDs. His fantasy appeal was as a runner, he torched the NFL for 1,143 yards rushing and 8 rushing TDs. If he tallies that much rushing production, he will be a fantastic QB1 in 2023. He also should have better passing numbers with the addition of D.J. Moore. |
Wolf of Roto Street Roto Street Journal | 3/17: Now with an elite WR1 in DJ Moore, Fields is every bit the cheat code of the Allen, Mahomes, Hurts tier, with a 1-2 Round discount
Tera Roberts Dynasty Vipers | Averaged 26.8 PPG on the season and there will be no change in his situation other than at running back. | Yes, the huge stretch where he put up insane numbers was against horrible defenses. But Fields had strong performances against NE, DAL and PHI - all tough defenses. Weekly 20-30 points is well within his range of outcomes. I am willing to reach on Fields to acquire him similarly to Jalen Hurts in 2022. |
