FantasyPros
That 2016 season now looks more like an anomaly, as Ryan looks more like an adequate rotational fantasy signal-caller than a starter. Winston missed three games last season but finished as the QB13 in fantasy points-per-game. Now, there's no guarantee he'll even get his starting gig back, making him a dicey proposition.
Rich Piazza
Fantasy Shed
Adding Calvin Ridley to Julio Jones and the rest of the wide receiver group is going to be a good thing. The Falcons didn't give him $100 million for nothing. They will be throwing the ball. The team will not commit to him as the "starter" when he comes back from his 3-game suspension. This is a bit of a concern, even though I don't see Ryan Fitzpatrick playing "lights out" during that time.
Andrew Gould
FantasyPros
Everyone who paid for Ryan's MVP season received a middling QB15 who failed to record three touchdowns or 20-plus fantasy points in a single game. A 7.1 TD% dwindled to 3.8, but a return to his 4.6 career average could mean the difference between 20 and 25 scores. He'd prove one of the draft's premier values by channeling his even-year magic (QB7 in 2012 and 2014, QB2 in 2016), but he has attempted 534 and 529 passes over the past two seasons after accruing over 600 throws in each of the previous four campaigns. He'll prove a strong matchup play for those not banking on a return to stardom without Kyle Shanahan.Drafters have spent years reaching for Winston's upside, and he maintains a QB21 ADP despite opening 2018 with a three-game suspension. No thanks. He finished QB22 in 13 games last year and has yet to place inside the top 12, so there's little reason to stash an erratic, turnover-prone performer when Mitchell Trubisky is still on the board. In all honesty, I'd rather not have any shares of someone with his abhorrent off-field record anyway.
Derek Lofland
Fantasy Football Maniax
The Falcons offense tanked without offensive coordinator Kyle Shanahan and Ryan averaged only 18.7 fantasy points per game. They have added some weapons this off-season and I think Ryan bounces back in 2018.
Raju Byfield
Win My Fantasy League
Three game suspension stymies value but should be a top-15 option weekly once he is back under center
Mike Tagliere
FantasyPros
The addition of Calvin Ridley bumped Ryan's stock up just a bit, enough to move him ahead of guys like Jared Goff and Jimmy Garoppolo. Ryan isn't going to be the top fantasy quarterback that he was in 2016, but he's someone you should be happy to roster if you're waiting until the late rounds to draft your quarterback, just don't reach for him. Did you know that if you combined Winston's and Ryan Fitzpatrick's passing yardage last year, it would've led the NFL? Their combined 4,607 yards were more than Tom Brady's 4,577, though their touchdowns (26) were somewhat lacking. Touchdowns are the hardest thing to predict, but seeing Winston's yardage with the weapons around him, big things are going to happen for him. The three-game suspension that he received definitely threw some water on the fire, but you should be able to snag Winston with the final pick in your draft and you should have a top-12 quarterback on a points-per-game basis.
Bobby Sylvester
FantasyPros
Just a year ago, everyone was drafting Ryan over 100 picks higher. He was coming off one of the greatest quarterback seasons of all-time so let's not forget that he has that in him. It isn't as though he was terrible last year either. Pro Football Focus graded him as their number two QB. He is a safe late-round bet with huge upside too.Winston is suspended for three weeks so he is undraftable outside of two-qb leagues. When he returns, however, we are looking at a top-10 quarterback. He was superb last season when healthy, passing for a 16-game rate of 4,900 passing yards so don't sleep on him.
Staff Rankings
QB List
Just about anything in comparison to Ryan's MVP year in 2016 was going to look disappointing for fantasy players, but after a slow start to the year, Ryan ended up turning in a pretty respectable season. Yes, losing Kyle Shanahan as offensive coordinator very clearly hurt him-he didn't have nearly as many big plays last year as he did the year before-but Ryan was very good at one thing-limiting turnovers. "Wait, but Ryan threw 12 interceptions last year, what do you mean?" I get that, but Ryan protected the ball a lot better than his interception numbers show. He was the victim of a lot of bad luck and a number of balls being tipped off receivers' hands (or other places-lest we all forget Marshon Lattimore's butt pick in Week 16 last year). There were two things that really hurt Ryan's fantasy value last year-first, his accuracy on deep balls dropped a fair bit. In 2016, he led the NFL with a 57.1% completion percentage on balls thrown 20+ yards. Last year, that number was 37.3%, tied for 23rd in the league. The second thing that hurt his value was the drop in touchdowns. Ryan threw 38 touchdowns in 2016, that dropped to 20 last year-his lowest total since his rookie season. I think it's pretty clear that 2016 was an outlier season for Ryan, and while he should be a productive, useful, and safe fantasy option, he's not going to be the explosive one he was in 2016. I think something like last year (or slightly better) is more what we should expect.Famous Jameis had a rough season emphasized by injury and inconsistency. There were definitely good weeks, like his Week 15 performance, but then there were games like his Week 9 game. Still, Winston showed an adept ability at making big throws, especially on corner routes where he posted a 114.3 QB rating, and he did finish the year with a solid 14.3% DVOA. However he was a pretty volatile player, making some poor decisions on his throws, leading the league with eight fumbles, and struggling mightily with his accuracy, throwing the ball high far too often. He's a boom-or-bust type of player, and given he's suspended for the first three games of the year because he groped an Uber driver, it's hard to consider him a viable fantasy option this year.
Kevin Wheeler
NFL Mock
In the 11 games last season where Jameis Winston played 90%+ of the snaps, he averaged 307 yards, 1.7 touchdowns and 1.0 interception for a 18.9 fantasy point per game average. Had he played at that pace for a full 16-game season, he would have finished as the No. 2 quarterback. @4for4_John
Kevin Roberts
Breaking Football
Provided Julio Jones isn't a distraction, the Falcons remain stacked and a top-10 lifer like Ryan is destined to bounce backI believed in Winston last year and he failed me. I won't make that mistake in 2018 so he has to prove a lot but he could easily be a great sleeper
