He left the Chargers at the right time, as they're going to be going through a transitional period. Instead, he joins a now-exciting Broncos offense that suddenly has tons of firepower. You don't add Gordon in free agency if you don't plan on using him as your lead back. The potential upside is that new offensive coordinator Pat Shurmur has been a one-back kind of guy, so it's possible that Phillip Lindsay is just there to give Gordon breathers when he needs them. With Courtland Sutton, Jerry Jeudy, KJ Hamler, and Noah Fant out there are receiving threats, Gordon should see a lot of light fronts this year. He's a middling RB2 with RB1 upside if they decide to give him 15-plus touches per game.If Conner were able to stay on the field, he'd be considered as a top-10 running back in fantasy. Unfortunately, he hasn't done that, and it's led them to draft Jaylen Samuels, Benny Snell, and now Anthony McFarland. While none of them are better than Conner, it's likely we see them take some of the workload away from him in 2020.
Brandon Funston
The Athletic
Your ranking may very depending on how much you think P. Lindsay will eat into Gordon's workload, the money is on the former Charger seizing a sizable advantage7th among RBs in FAN PPG over past 2 seasons (better than Cook, Henry, Mixon, to name a few), but in a prove-it season health wise - figure he's playing for his future in PIT
Elliot Berkovits
Pack to the Future
The Broncos backfield looks like it could be the trickiest one to figure out in all of football. They paid to bring in Gordon but still roster a young and highly-talented RB in Phillip Lindsay. I see this being a near 50/50 split which is never a good thing for fantasy owners. Many people consider 2019 to be a bad season for Conner but before getting hurt, he was averaging over 14 points per game. Now, Ben Roethlisberger is slated to return and the Steelers offense of old could be coming back together. Getting a piece of that in the 3rd-4th round is terrific value.
Dan Harris
FantasyPros
If Conner stays healthy this year, he's almost certainly going to be a draft-day bargain. Through Week 7, before his season was derailed by injury, he was on pace for more than 1400 total yards and 14 touchdowns. Mike Tomlin has come out and essentially stated that Conner is going to be a workhorse back, and he may get even more work in the receiving game if Ben Roethlisberger doesn't push it downfield as much as he used to after elbow surgery. In other words, it's just health with Conner. If he has it, he should be no worse than an extremely strong RB2 in half- or full-PPR leagues.
Jason Petropoulos
BRoto Fantasy
People are quick to write Conner off, but injuries are the only difference from this season to last where he was being drafted as a first-round pick. In fact, Big-Ben is back, so Conner should have more running lanes than he did last season when he excelled. From weeks 1-8 last season, Conner saw almost 18 touches per game, was sixth among RBs in fantasy points per snap, and forced the second-most missed tackles on receptions. He's also played at least 10 games every year of his career and is an RB1 whenever he's on the field. He's easily worth the third round pick.
Kyle Yates
FantasyPros
Gordon's going to be splitting time with Phillip Lindsay this season, but Gordon should be the lead back in this offense. The Broncos are going to want to run the ball and Gordon should easily see over 210 carries this year. He's a solid RB2 option for your fantasy rosters.Conner's a dicey pick, but that seems to be built into his ADP right now. If everything goes his way this season, Conner will drastically outperform where he's being drafted right now. However, we just simply don't know at this point whether or not he's going to remain healthy for all 16 games. In fact, I might bet against that happening.
Ben Wasley
The Fantasy First Down
Melvin Gordon to the Broncos is not as bad as most think. Gordon was clearly losing his role to Austin Ekeler and he now moves to an impressive run offence where he should be the clear lead guy. While Lindsay will clearly have a role, I expect Gordon to take the goal line carries, the 3rd down work and at least half of the between the tackles stuff making him the clear value in Denver. Given the Broncos backs combined for over 350 carries and 78 receptions, there's a lot of points to go around and Gordon should get the bulk of it. If Lindsay goes down there's always a chance he's a league winner too so the upside is there. Take a chance on him in the late 3rd round. What an awful season 2019 proved to be for those who draft James Conner in the first round of drafts. Big Ben was injured, the offence fell apart, Conner's body fell apart and other backs like Benny Snell, Jaylen Samuels and even Kerrith Whyte (who oddly didn't look too bad) swarmed in. With Ben back, Conner ripped like a flying squirrel and another RB in 4th rounder Anthony McFarland in the mix, 2020 has turned into a real crap shoot. With a 4th round price tag though, Conner might just be worth the risk as an upside gamble returning to a good offence where he should be the lead back.
Seth Miller
Crossroads Fantasy Football
1 year to go off because Vic, and his OC Scangarello don't have much history at their current positions. Denver was an average ball running team in 2019. 409 attempts. The 100 RB targets were nice. Someone is going to disappear out of this offense. I think it's assumed to be Royce, I can believe that, but what roll do they plan on losing Lindsay in? Breather back? He can not pass block, Royce is the best on the team for that. So Lindsay now appears to lose out in every phase, one way or another to his teammates, might see less work than anticipated.
Derek Lofland
FantasyPros
When Gordon is healthy, he is capable of 1,500 yards from scrimmage and double digit touchdowns. He should be the lead back in Denver, but it will be a very crowded RBBC.Conner went from 1,470 yards from scrimmage and 13 touchdowns in 2018 to 715 yards from scrimmage and 7 touchdowns in 2019. The big issue for me is durability, Conner has RB1 talent, but missed 3 games in 2018 and 6 games last year. He has a lot of upside due to his ability, but a lot of downside due to his durability.
