Lineups
It feels like I'm the only one who's still in on Sony Michel for this season. Yes, he's injured, and yes, the Patriots offense is going to get worse without Tom Brady. However, Bill Belichick made Michel a first-round pick and has given him the full workload for the majority of his time on the field. If Michel can stay healthy, he should benefit from playing next to a mobile QB in Cam Newton, and he could easily surpass 250 touches. While I still expect Sony Michel to be the leader of the Patriots' running backs in touches by a significant margin, James White should be very involved as well. The Pats have an uninspiring pass-catching corps outside of White and Julian Edelman. However, quarterbacks who can scramble statistically throw to running backs less and Cam Newton fits the bill as he's not known for utilizing the position heavily. The Patriots will find ways to get White the ball, but in a lower-scoring attack, his upside isn't great.
Dan Harris
FantasyPros
Michel has justifiably fallen out of favor for fantasy owners after yet another sub-par year, and there's little excitement about him this year. He has averaged nearly 16 carries per game in his career, however, and may be asked to carry more of a load now that Tom Brady is no longer under center. But his upside is limited by his complete lack of involvement in the passing game, as he has just 31 targets and 19 receptions over his 29 career games. In standard scoring leagues, there's a chance he may be slightly undervalued given that Damien Harris was placed on IR and Lamar Miller was released, but it would be hard to rely on him as anything more than a bench player in or half- or full-PPR leagues. That's especially true given his foot surgery in May which could impact him early in the season.White derives almost all of his value from his prowess as a receiver, as he's topped 67 carries just once in his career. While his work in the passing game (218 targets, 159 receptions over the past two years) has kept him as a solid, if perhaps inconsistent, fantasy option, it's unclear if that will continue this season. He will undoubtedly remain the Patriots' passing-down back, but it's unlikely that he'll see quite the same production with Cam Newton, even with how much work Christian McCaffrey saw in the receiving game. He'll remain an option in PPR leagues and perhaps in deeper half-PPR formats, but that's about all.
Draft Engine
Draft Engine
Patriots offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels prefers a running scheme heavy on gap blocking, and Michel is a great fit for that approach. It's his lack of involvement in the passing game that will continue to limit his fantasy upside, especially in PPR leagues.White carries a considerable amount of fantasy value in PPR leagues after averaging more than five receptions per game over the past two seasons. Expect him to remain productive in 2020 despite no longer catching passes from Tom Brady.
Seth Miller
Crossroads Fantasy Football
I've had 475 total touches in my first 2 years despite missing 3 games, but have finished as RB28, and 29 in those 2 years. Who am I? And why am I so bad? Will be interesting to see who's throwing him the ball in 2020 and if Sony/Harris can get involved in the passing game/on the field(cough, cough Harris) at all. Oh great, Cam. A impossible offense to predict which Bill probably loves. We'll just have to rely far too much on preseason because relying on what Bill normally does would be relying on him never doing what you think. White has never played a year without Brady and we'll now have to rely on Stidham for those targets. I wonder if TE gets more involved this year, with Ben Watson leading the TE group with 24 targets last year. Could potentially impact White, plus probably not being top 5 in pass ATT.
Mike Tagliere
FantasyPros
After a somewhat disappointing rookie campaign where he failed to finish as a top-24 running back despite racking up 209 carries in the high-scoring Patriots offense, Michel had an even worse sophomore campaign, averaging just 3.7 yards per carry and scoring just seven touchdowns on 259 touches. The Patriots spent a first-round pick on him, so he'll be given every opportunity to succeed, but they won't allow him to be inefficient much longer with Damien Harris waiting in the wings. Michel simply hasn't been the player we watched at Georgia. It's hard to see losing Tom Brady actually help him become more efficient. Not only that, but he now has to worry about Cam Newton stealing goal-line touches.White has always been a value, especially in PPR formats, but with Tom Brady gone, this team is likely to throw a whole lot less, and White has never averaged more than 5.9 carries per game. He's not likely to live up to his usual RB3-type numbers. I wouldn't want to trust him every week.
Ben Wasley
The Fantasy First Down
The Damien Harris hype is building as Sony Michel battles to be ready for Week 1. He's becoming more of a low-upside gamble by the day but will provide some upside if you get him late enough in drafts.James White had a disappointing drop in fantasy production but somehow managed to manage a RB2 finish in half-PPR on the back of 67 rushes, 72 receptions, 908 yards and 6 TDs. He'll remain a PPR staple but lacks the true upside he once had with Jarrett Stidham at the controls. While the Auburn alum never had great RB receiving options, he showed a total disinterest in using them and this will certainly affect the 28-year-old Pat. He remains a valid weekly option but I wouldn't actually draft him at his Top 30 projection. I'd look elsewhere and suggest trying to win your league rather than avoiding losing it.
Dalton Kates
APEX Fantasy Leagues
Pass-catching weapon in a RB room that is suddenly depleted. Lacking passing weapons will allow White to earn targets.
Elliot Berkovits
Packer Report
Few players are more difficult to gauge than Sony Michel. He can score three TD's one week and then have a total of 26 yards the next. In PPR formats he simply doesn't see the ball enough to considered a starter.Brady's departure will undoubtedly affect White's consistency but with Cam Newton as the presumed starter, White may be the best Patriot worth rostering this season. We've seen Christian McCaffrey have tremendous success with Newton as his QB and while I don't think White has near that upside, he is solid flex in option in PPR formats.
Jason Petropoulos
BRoto Fantasy
No thanks. No thanks. No thanks. There's no hidden value here. This is a guy who averaged 3.7 yards per carry on a decent offense last year and has never surpassed 7 TDs in a season. With the best goal-line running QB in NFL history leading the way now, Michel is best left off of your squad. We know Cam can carry a pass-catching RB, as we saw him do it with CMC. However, Cam's health is questionable, his arm is questionable, and we don't know what the offense will look like. He could end up as a PPR flex option, but I'll likely try my luck elsewhere.

Michel recovering from foot surgery, per sources. The surgery was viewed as more maintenance-based to relieve discomfort. How Michel's rehab progresses will determine if he opens training camp on PUP. @MikeReiss - I don't think he starts the season on PUP. I'm like being able to get him in the 8th-9th round.Since the start of the 2017 season, only Christian McCaffrey and Alvin Kamara have more RB targets than James White. Probably has quite a bit to do with Brady, but really so no reason why this won't continue with Cam or Stidham.

With Cam Newton behind center, this offense is going to be much more potent than it would have been with Jarrett Stidham. This benefits Michel with more scoring opportunities and trips into the red zone. However, the downside is that Newton has the size and power to take away some of those goal line touches. Michel's nothing more than a RB3 this season, in my opinion.Cam Newton's now at QB for the Patriots and he's shown a propensity for targeting pass-catching RBs. White's not going to suddenly turn into Christian McCaffrey, but he's a solid value right now in redraft ADP.

*Update - Latest foot surgery extra concerning* Perhaps the Pats go run-obsessed in the Post Brady era? Nothing to really dig in and love here in such a messy RBBC, and wouldn't be surprised if Damien Harris pushes for the big back this year much harder.
