From a talent perspective, Saquon Barkley is the best RB in the NFL when he's on the field. Unfortunately, the issue has been staying on the field the past two seasons. Barkley has played 15 out of a possible 32 games, which makes him a very risky investment at the top of your draft. For fantasy managers to have a shot of competing deep into their playoffs, they need their top draft pick to pull their weight all season long. Earlier on in the off-season, Barkley was being drafted as a top-3 option. He's fallen a little bit in ADP, which is more in line with where he should be going. As a late first-round draft pick, the risk is worth the reward. Anything more than that and you're playing with fire.Did you know that Joe Mixon has actually played more games than Dalvin Cook since they both came into the league in 2017? Yet somehow Mixon gets labeled as an injury risk every single season and Cook is being drafted as a top-3 pick this year. While Cook's production when he's on the field is certainly worthy of a top-3 pick - don't get me wrong - it goes to show the recency bias that comes into play for fantasy managers when they're on the clock. When Mixon is on the field, he's going to receive one of the heaviest workloads in the entire league. He's a top-5 talent at the RB position in the league and this offense is set to take a major jump in 2021 with Joe Burrow and his bevy of receiving weapons. If Mixon had been shut down immediately last season and put on IR when his injury occurred, we wouldn't have this perception in our minds of him as a huge injury risk. However, because of Zac Taylor's inconsistent commitment to Mixon returning to the lineup last year, fantasy managers have a bad taste in their mouths. Go get some mouthwash, clean out that taste, and draft Mixon at a major discount this year. The production's going to be too good to pass up and if you can get him as a RB2 on your roster, you're well on your way to a fantasy championship.

Sleepers and Busts
Saquon's coming off a devastating knee injury. The Giants might ease him back by limiting his touches. Even if they don't, Barkley's running style, which involves plenty of quick stops and starts isn't ideal for an ACL injury. Can he be the same RB? Will he have the same burst of acceleration that made him special? Can he stay healthy? And I speak from personal experience having torn my ACL, albeit 24 years ago. The Giants line isn't very good and the book is still out on QB Daniel Jones. Saquon is too risky in 2021 for me as an early round pick. Note- I heard a prominent fantasy analyst mention on a podcast that Wayne Gallman is Barkley's backup. She was incorrect. Gallman isn't even on the Giants anymore. The backup looks like it's going to be Devontae Booker. With regards to Saquon, let someone else take the chance. PassMixon is a rare three down RB. He's excellent at catching passes and a talented runner. The comp scouts gave when he came out of college was LeVeon Bell. Gio Bernard left for Tampa in free agency so he should get the third down work. The concern: 1.) Did the Bengals do enough in the offseason up front to help the blocking for Mixon and Burrow? They signed Riley Reiff in free agency and drafted Jackson Carman out of Clemson. Mixon might be a year away from fantasy greatness. He has the chops. That's not in doubt. The question, is that enough in 2021? If things break right- (aka- Joe Burrow must stay healthy)- then yes!

ACL recovery has him on track to play Week 1, though he'll likely be limited - it could take a couple weeks, but should eventually return to heavily featured roleIf Mixon can stay healthy, HC Taylor is basically showing his cards that he plans to make him one of the highest volume RBs in the NFL

FantasyPros
It's hard to envision Barkley returning to form as a top-5 fantasy RB, especially since targets may be scarce. New York's receiving corps is crowded, and while Barkley won't fall off the map entirely, a major selling point on top-5 upside is his ability and volume as a receiver. With that volume in question, I'm a little lower on him than consensus.Though Mixon is collectively viewed as a "pass-catching back," his career high in single-season receptions is just 43 from 2018. He was on pace to blow his rushing and receiving numbers out of the water in 2020 before injury caused him to miss 10 games. Still, it's worth noting that Mixon has never racked up 1,500 scrimmage yards or double-digit touchdowns, and he's never finished higher than RB9 in a single season.

FantasyPros
After setting the fantasy world on fire his rookie season with over 2,000 yards from scrimmage and 15 touchdowns, Barkley hasn't exactly lived up to expectations producing 1,535 total yards and eight touchdowns over 15 games the last two seasons. He tore his ACL early in the season, which should give him plenty of time to bounce back, though his violent running style could take a bit longer in recovery, and he only returned to practice in late-August. The Giants suddenly have more weapons than ever in the passing game, so Barkley is unlikely to come close to the 121 targets he saw in 2018, though he should have more scoring opportunities. There is some risk with Barkley at the top of drafts due to his knee, but when on the field, we know he'll produce.Over the final nine games of 2019, Zac Taylor gave Mixon 214 touches (23.8 per game), which made us believe they'd finally realized he should be used in a workhorse fashion. The start of 2020 wasn't as generous, but he did average 19.7 touches per game over the first three weeks. Then we saw Giovani Bernard get knocked out of the lineup for a few weeks, and it led to Mixon totaling 27.0 touches per game over the next three weeks before getting hurt. Now that Bernard is gone, are we finally going to get a full season's worth of 20-plus touch games for Mixon? If so, top-five is in the realm of possibilities, especially knowing he'll be more involved in the passing game. Don't sleep on Mixon; he's still a top-10 running back talent-wise.

Back at practice, Week 1 remains realistic. Only back w/ the upside to challenge CMacNo Gio Bernard. No real rookie competition added. Even more explosive offense with Chase here assuming Burrow is healthy. Line may suck, but Mixon is easily one of the top winners of the offseason -- and OC has publicly stated he has "no interest in load management" as Mixon looks like the best player in camp

The good news is that by the time Week 1 rolls around, Saquon Barkley will have had a full calendar year to recover from his ACL/MCL/meniscus injury that he suffered last September. This is the fantastic as fantasy football is more fun when Barkley is healthy. The bad news? It truly sounds as if the Giants want to limit his workload early on this year, and it's tough to blame them considering Barkley is their franchise player at the moment. I'm also a tad concerned with his ultimate PPR ceiling, as Saquon benefited immensely from Eli "dumpoff" Manning back in 2018. He's still an unquestioned three-down bell cow, but I just don't expect that type of insane usage in the passing game again. Still, f antasy managers should expect Barkley's workload -- and therefore his fantasy value -- to increase as the season moves along.Entering his fifth season in the NFL, Joe Mixon is once again set up for a massive fantasy campaign -- on paper, at least. We've been here before with Mixon and it hasn't always gone according to plan. For those who view him as injury prone following a frustrating 2020 in the health department, it's important to note that he appeared in 44-of-48 possible games from 2017-19. The departure of Gio Bernard to the Bucs gives Mixon a legitimate chance at seizing a three-down workload in (likely) the best/fastest offense he has ever played in. It's set up for him to smash. O n paper, at least...

It's easy to understand people being frustrated with Joe Mixon in 2020, but once Joe Burrow was done, there was no reason to push him back onto the field after his injury. The Bengals invested heavily in Joe Mixon last off season, and there are no challengers to his position in the offense. He also had back to back 1K yard rushing seasons before 2020's disappointment. Having faith and buying back into Mixon for '21 is a good idea and will be rewarded.

Will injuries take their toll? Saquon is a great pick for re-draft, but scares me in bestball.

Over the last two seasons, Barkley played a total of 15 games combined. The risk of injury is just too great right now for me to take him over some proven guys who stay on the field, even if he is the most talented back in the NFL.Beware of the narrative of "improved OL." The addition of rookies can be a great thing for an offensive line, i.e. last year's Tampa Bay Bucs, but it can also make a glaring problem worse, i.e. last year's NY Giants. Mixon will likely see insane volume, but he has been historically inefficient and, unless 2nd-round-pick OT Jackson Carman is a transcendent talent, there is no way you can predict, with a straight face, Mixon will be more efficient with his opportunities. Unless you are getting Mixon as your RB 2 in the late second or third round of your drafts, stay away.

Injuries capped Barkley's 2019 season and completely derailed his 2020 season as he played only two games. I love Barkley's ability, but he needs to stay healthy if he is going to realize his unlimited potential.Mixon has averaged only 4.5 and 4.0 yards per touch the last two years and he missed 10 games with injury last year. Mixon has a ton of talent, but he is a dicey RB2 due to injuries and a bad offensive line.
