Hail to Fantasy Football
He continues to slide down my rankings, but at some point I have to stop the slide...right?
Mike Tagliere
FantasyPros
It seems like years since Howard has been a force to reckon with in fantasy football, but prior to the 2019 season that was ended with injuries, he'd posted 935 or more rushing yards in each of the previous three seasons. The issue with projecting that moving forward is due to his offensive line play. The Dolphins have what may be the worst line in football, while Howard has only run behind top-10 offensive lines while in Chicago and Philadelphia. Still, if you need a running back who's likely locked into 12-plus touches a week, Howard can fill a role on your fantasy team. After a somewhat disappointing rookie campaign where he failed to finish as a top-24 running back despite racking up 209 carries in the high-scoring Patriots offense, Michel had an even worse sophomore campaign, averaging just 3.7 yards per carry and scoring just seven touchdowns on 259 touches. The Patriots spent a first-round pick on him, so he'll be given every opportunity to succeed, but they won't allow him to be inefficient much longer with Damien Harris waiting in the wings. Michel simply hasn't been the player we watched at Georgia. It's hard to see losing Tom Brady actually help him become more efficient.
Elliot Berkovits
Pack to the Future
After one season with the Eagles, Howard now finds himself in Miami in what could be a resurgent offense under Tua Tagovailoa. He will split carries with Matt Breida but I expect Howard to get the majority of the goal-line work. He's a much better option in non-PPR.Few players are more difficult to gauge than Sony Michel. He can score three TD's one week and then have a total of 26 yards the next. In PPR formats he simply doesn't see the ball enough to considered a starter.
Dan Harris
FantasyPros
Howard is perpetually undervalued in fantasy football, in part because of his lack of success as a receiver. But over his four-year career, he's totaled 3,895 yards rushing, 30 touchdowns, and a 4.3 YPC average. Those numbers are more than adequate for fantasy purposes, especially considering Howard should get the bulk of the work for the Dolphins. While Matt Breida should siphon off some carries, Howard will likely be the primary ball carrier and the goal-line option, making him a Flex option in standard leagues.Michel has justifiably fallen out of favor for fantasy owners after yet another sub-par year, and there's little excitement about him this year. He has averaged nearly 16 carries per game in his career, however, and may be asked to carry more of a load now that Tom Brady is no longer under center. But his upside is limited by two roadblocks: the presence of James White, Rex Burkhead, and Damien Harris, and his complete lack of involvement in the passing game. Michel has just 31 targets and 19 receptions over his 29 career games. In standard scoring leagues, there's a chance he may be slightly undervalued, but it would be hard to rely on him as anything more than a bench player in or half- or full-PPR leagues. That's especially true given his foot surgery in May which could impact him early in the season.
Jason Petropoulos
BRoto Fantasy
No thanks. No thanks. No thanks. There's no hidden value here. This is a guy who averaged 3.7 yards per carry on a decent offense last year and has never surpassed 7 TDs in a season. With the best goal-line running QB in NFL history leading the way now, Michel is best left off of your squad.
Derek Lofland
FantasyPros
Howard should be the lead back in a crowded RBBC in Miami this year, which would give him flex value with upside if they can improve the offensive line.
Kyle Yates
FantasyPros
Howard will get the opportunity to be a starting RB again in 2020 in Miami. He's the clear option for goal line carries and this offensive line is drastically improved from 2019. Howard should be a solid RB2 option all season long in this offense. With Cam Newton behind center, this offense is going to be much more potent than it would have been with Jarrett Stidham. This benefits Michel with more scoring opportunities and trips into the red zone. However, the downside is that Newton has the size and power to take away some of those goal line touches. Michel's nothing more than a RB3 this season, in my opinion.
Kevin Wheeler
Draftwize
Expect Howard to be the top choice for the Dolphins' goal line work this season.Michel recovering from foot surgery, per sources. The surgery was viewed as more maintenance-based to relieve discomfort. How Michel's rehab progresses will determine if he opens training camp on PUP. @MikeReiss - I don't think he starts the season on PUP. I'm like being able to get him in the 8th-9th round.
Ben Wasley
The Fantasy First Down
After being drafted out of Indiana in the 5th round a few years ago, Jordan Howard has regularly surpassed expectations. He was sensational for the Bears in his debut season before dropping away along with the team's attack as a whole. A move to Philly proved he still had it as he held off Miles Sanders with superior play until injury crueled his season. Now in Miami's RB-wasteland and he's got a chance to do it all again. The message is clear, under-estimate Howard at your peril. With around 400 RB touches to go around, I expect Howard to lead the backfield with Breida taking the change-of-pace/receiving role. Take Howard in the late 8th round if you need a safe option but realise the upside is limited this time. You know what you'll be getting if you draft Sony Michel. 900 yards, 7ish TDs and an RB3 finish. Most weeks that'll mean single digit fantasy points and that's not ideal, but there is upside. If the Pats are forced to go very run-heavy given their awkward QB situation, it's possible Michel will get a lot more run. Then again it's also possible Damien Harris comes in and takes a large part of Michel's work. Ultimately, he's little more than a backup with some non-PPR upside.
Seth Miller
Crossroads Fantasy Football
I learned my lesson last year! Howard will be more involved than I like! Still likely to receive 150ish carries with a rookie drafted, whether we like it or not. Was pacing for 190 in Philly last year. The good news is he's an absolute dunce when it comes to pass catching and Miami targeted the RB a sneaky amount(99). It was just spread out through Drake, who left, and the Walton and LA(i)RDS of the world 150 attempts at a 4ypc clip with a handful of TDs would put him at 90 fantasy points. Your standard RB40 on the yearI've had 475 total touches in my first 2 years despite missing 3 games, but have finished as RB28, and 29 in those 2 years. Who am I? And why am I so bad?
