FantasyPros
Over his past 16 healthy games, Watkins has been better than Amari Cooper. Add in the fact that the Rams threw for more yards than Buffalo last year and that Watkins now has less competition and there is no reason his draft stock should have taken such a severe tumble.Edelman has been a points per game warrior in fantasy football, but unfortunately, he isn't on the field enough to warrant grabbing him at his current ADP, especially with all of the weapons the Patriots have.
Sablich Brothers
5th Down Fantasy
Trade to Rams should hurt Watkins overall value, but Goff less proven than Taylor at this point; health still the major worry; led NFL in 2015 with 10.9 YPT.Cooks is in town, but Edelman still has great rapport with Brady; risky pick overall with so many receiving options; should remain very solid PPR pick.
Chet Gresham
WalterFootball
Watkins has all the ability in the world, but of course, his injury history is a real concern, and now that he's in L.A., his quarterback is a concern as well.Edelman's value took a blow when Brandin Cooks was added. Cooks could beat him out for targets this year, and if Rob Gronkowski stays healthy, he will also take away a big chunk of looks.
Kevin Wheeler
NFL Mock
Going to LAR is a lateral move in my opinion, my only concern is if he's 100% healthy. He's a better NFL receiver than fantasy, with so many options on this team the fantasy points will be spread around. With Gillislee, Burkhead, and the other backs crushing it on the goaline Edelman isn't getting the targets and TD's he was back in 2015.
Mike Tagliere
FantasyPros
Going to the Rams isn't ideal from an efficiency standpoint, but it's also not quite as bad as you think. The Rams went out and hired an offensive-minded head coach in Sean McVay, snagged the top offensive lineman in free agency to protect Jared Goff's blindside, and drafted a few wide receivers who are possession-style wide receivers. Watkins, however, is the only alpha-dog on the team and should see at least 125 targets there. Combining volume with his talent level can be dangerous, making him worth it as a low-end WR2 with upside for more. When the Patriots traded for Brandin Cooks, I was legitimately concerned about Edelman's role going forward. That was until they extended him for another two years. You can't expect anywhere near the 9.7 targets per game that he's seen over the last four years, but he's obviously part of their plans. He was never a touchdown scorer, so it's hard to rely on him as anything more than a low-upside WR3.
Kevin Roberts
Breaking Football
I just don't trust this dude to stay healthy, plus now he's in LA with Goff throwing him the ball. YeeshEdelman's value jumps in PPR but he doesn't score much and insert Cooks.
Derek Lofland
Fantasy Football Maniax
Watkins was never 100% healthy withe foot issues last year and now he has QB Jared Goff throwing him the ball, which tanks his upside.
Corey Parson
RotoExperts
Watkins can't catch a break. With the trade to L.A. he loses value due to QB Jared Goff. Auction Value $20 Edelman had a quiet 98 receptions in 2016 to go along with a meager three touchdowns. The catch totals will go down with Cooks in the offense. Auction Value $13
Jon Collins
Fantasy Sports LR
I'm not wholly convinced that Jared Goff can make the most of Watkins, or that Watkins can stay healthy. The trade hurts his draft stock.
Staff Rankings
QB List
Sammy Watkins, who is apparently made of balsa wood and will pull a hamstring if the breeze is too strong, is quite a fantastic receiver, but is a walking talking injury risk. Naturally, he's banged up coming into the year, but should be alright in week one (hopefully). He's got as much talent as any receiver in football, but do you trust him to stay healthy? I don't. Still, the talent is undeniable. Now that he's on the Rams, he's the undeniable number one option, and while L.A.'s offense is a significant downgrade, Kenny Britt still managed over 1,000 yards last season and he's no Sammy Watkins. If Jared Goff shows an improvement, Watkins could still be in for a great year.Edelman is, without a doubt, a talented receiver, and he's in a great offense, but now with the acquisition of Brandin Cooks, Edelman is lower on the totem pole than he has been before. Both Cooks and Rob Gronkowski are going to eat into Edelman's targets. He's never been a huge guy in the red zone, so it looks as though Edelman's upside will be pretty limited this year. Still, being in a New England offense has a lot of potential.
Chet Gresham
WalterFootball
Watkins has all the ability in the world, but of course, his injury history is a real concern. At this point in a fantasy draft, I think it's worth grabbing him if he falls though.Edelman's value took a blow when Brandin Cooks was added. Cooks could beat him out for targets this year, and if Rob Gronkowski stays healthy, he will also take away a big chunk of looks.
