The Draft Zone
Trey Sermon "continues to get a lot of snaps with the first-team unit," could eventually begin games as 49ers main back to "tenderize the defense" before Raheem Mostert enters. @evansilva "a lot of snaps at RB with the 1st team unit. In 2019, the 49ers liked to begin games with Tevin Coleman at tailback, which both tenderized the defense & kept the 49ers' home-run hitter, Raheem Mostert, fresh. Sermon appears to be on track for a similar role" @DBro_FFB
Kyle Yates
FantasyPros
Sermon now enters an offense that is set to explode under Lance and we could be looking at one of 2021's greatest fantasy steals. With Mostert above him on the depth chart - for the time being - Sermon's ADP will remain low enough where you don't have to rely on him as a starter. He can remain on your bench until he steps in as the lead option in this offense and you suddenly now have a potential locked-and-loaded RB2. With Sermon's skillset and size, he should be a factor around the goal line and he could see enough of a workload on the ground to bring a safe floor each week. We'll see a rotation of other backs in this offense, but Sermon figures to see 12-15 touches per week if he is the starter. We might have to wait a while until we get to the point where Sermon is the starter, but he's worth stashing on your bench for when that moment comes.Drake signed a massive deal - for a RB - in free agency to come to Las Vegas, but he's certainly going to take a dip in production from what we've seen over the past couple of years. He'll be heavily involved as a receiver all over the formation in this offense, but it's unlikely to lead to consistent fantasy production week after week. Drake's now in the territory of a low-upside FLEX play that will need Jacobs to miss time with an injury to see his workload increase.
Mike Tagliere
FantasyPros
As of now, we have to assume it's Raheem Mostert as the starting running back, though Kyle Shanahan did trade up into the third round to get Sermon. This should tell you that Mostert is on a short leash, and to be fair, he hasn't been able to hold up to a workhorse workload. The 49ers have one of the softest schedules in the league among running backs, so if we start hearing whispers that Sermon will start right out of the gate, he should shoot up draft boards. For now, he should be viewed as one of the best bench stashes in fantasy football. The marriage between the Raiders and Drake is an odd one, as Drake was somewhat of a Josh Jacobs doppleganger last year. They both finished between 3.9 and 4.0 yards per carry, both scored double-digit rushing touchdowns, and both were extremely limited in the passing game. The Raiders have continually given guys like DeAndre Washington, Jalen Richard, and Devontae Booker work alongside Jacobs over the last two years, so Drake is going to get mixed in quite heavily, and my guess would be that the passing game is where he gets most of it. You may not remember, but Drake was considered a solid third-down back early in his career with the Dolphins, and has two seasons with 50-plus catches on his NFL resume. It's tough to see him eating into Jacobs' carry totals a whole lot, especially after the way he looked with the Cardinals in 2020, but he should offer low-upside flex value due to his work in the passing game.
Wolf of Roto Street
Roto Street Journal
Absolutely perfect landing spot, should thrive in Shanny's zone blocking schemeGross spot behind a dismantled Raiders OL as Josh Jacobs' second-fiddle -- but projected out highly due to high receiving upside
Derek Lofland
FantasyPros
I do not think Wilson and Mostert will stay healthy this year and when all is said and done, Sermon should emerge as the lead back in SF.
Mark Ringo
Sleepers and Busts
49'ers RB Jeff Wilson's knee injury in May (out 4-6 months) forces everyone to move up one rung. Rookie RB Trey Sermon suddenly becomes very interesting. Preach it Brother Ringo! He's a heartbeat away from the starting role in San Fran. He lit up Clemson in the college football playoffs and looked good doing it. The 49'ers have one of the better lines in the NFL. Rookie QB Trey Lance lurks though. If Lance takes over at QB he could vulture some TDs. The comp by scouts is Josh Allen. That said, if Sermon's price tag doesn't skyrocket over the summer he could be a nice sleeper. That said, I'm already hearing a lot of buzz about him on Twitter and it's only June. Now let us pray to the fantasy gods for good luck in 2021.
Joe Pisapia
FantasyPros
Kenyan Drake started the season in a walking boot, but once he was healthy, he had a nice second half for the Cardinals, including some great work in the red zone. Now, he's in a bizarre time share with Josh Jacobs in Las Vegas and his role is pretty undefined at this point. The Raiders backfield is the poster child for why you take clear cut RB1's early. An injury to Jacobs could open up a huge opportunity for Drake, but for now it seems like a situation where no one is set up for fantasy success.
