Find me a more hyped up player this season than Pitts. Go ahead, I'll wait. It's near impossible to talk about the top-5 TEs this season and keep Pitts out of the conversation due to the opportunity that's now in front of him. It would be the definition of an outlier if he finished as a top-5 option in his rookie season, but the ball has to go somewhere in this offense and the Falcons are going to be committed to getting the ball in his hands. You're going to have to pay up to get him on your team, but the opportunity that he has in Atlanta this season might make it worth the investment.Every single year, there's a player or two who come out of nowhere to be a weekly viable fantasy option. Last year, Thomas was the waiver wire pickup of the year at the TE position. He went on a tear to finish the season and ended up as the TE6 in all of fantasy football. Did you know that he was the league leader in routes run at the TE position and that it wasn't even close? He finished with 609 routes run, according to PFF, and second on that list was Travis Kelce with 568! The opportunity for Thomas in this offense is massive. Heading into 2021, Thomas certainly has a bit more competition for targets this time around, but he's proven that he can get the job done for fantasy. We can't view him as a top-tier option due to the additions Washington has made at the receiver spots this off-season, but he still should have weekly viability as a low-end TE1.

The highest drafted tight end ever enters the NFL with a locked-in prominent role within his team's passing offense. Pitts is often described as a unicorn, a player who we all think can overcome the mostly negative history of rookie tight ends in fantasy football. In addition to his own talent, the case for Pitts lies in how much volume he could see post Julio Jones trade. His offensive environment is a positive as well, headlined by the underrated Matt Ryan and the forward-thinking Arthur Smith. Pitts has a large range of outcomes in his first season in the NFL, but the ceiling outcome keeps him in play as a top five or six round pick come draft day.Fresh off a three-year, $24 million extension he signed entering training camp, Thomas enters '21 with a more locked-in role in Washington's offense. In fact, Thomas played 93% of the team's offensive snaps last season, and he was in on 37-of-37 snaps with Ryan Fitzpatrick this preseason. On those 37 snaps Thomas ran a route on 22-of-22 "Fitzmagic" drop backs. Thomas' ceiling/floor combo isn't as high as the top six tight ends, but he has a strong case as "the next best option" following that tier drop.

What if I told you it was possible to draft Calvin Johnson and play him at TE. Would you do it? In 30 years of playing fantasy football, Kyle Pitts is the best fantasy tight end I've ever seen. I had that same feeling back in 1998 when I first saw and drafted a rookie WR from Marshall on the Vikings, Randy Moss. I had that feeling again after I saw RB Saquon Barkley. Many experts said a rookie couldn't be drafted as the 1st or 2nd RB because he hadn't done it before. Saquon had over 2,028 total yards 91 receptions 15 TDs his rookie year. To paraphrase the line from A League of Their Own, "I know the goods when I see it. And he's the goods." When his career is all said and done Kyle Pitts will rewrite the record books at TE.Logan Thomas gets an upgrade at QB with Ryan Fitzpatrick. That said, Washington has a good defense. The game script could dictate more running plays in the 4th Qtr instead of garbage yards. Limited upside.

It's really difficult not to rank Pitts as a top-5 option, even though rookie TEs almost never achieve that level of production. History is against him finishing as high as TE5, but I'm going to rank him there because the upside is enormous. Imagine drafting yawn-worthy options like Hockenson, Fant, or Thomas ahead of a guy like Pitts. It ain't gonna happen.Thomas broke out in 2020 thanks to his 72 receptions and six scores, though Washington addressed its need for depth at receiver by adding Curtis Samuel, Dyami Brown, and Adam Humphries in the offseason. It's unlikely Thomas commands such a hefty target share this season with so many other mouths to feed, but he's still worthy of TE1 consideration.

With Julio gone, Kyle Pitts could truly explode in Year 1 - a unicorn prospect with limitless target potential; has been a star of camp

He should be a very good player for a very long time, but we've seen highly-athletic tight ends have trouble out of the gate before. In fact, rookie tight ends in general have trouble producing. I want to ask you a question: Since 1998, how many tight ends do you think have topped 627 yards in their rookie season? Two of them. Both of those tight ends saw 115-plus targets, a number Pitts isn't likely to see with Arthur Smith as the new head coach. It helps that Julio Jones has left town, but don't forget that ultra-athletic Jonnu Smith saw just 65 targets in Smith's offense just last year, and he wasn't a rookie. We certainly watched Thomas break out last season, particularly from Week 6 forward. Head coach Ron Rivera said a lightbulb went off for him, and it led to him finishing as the No. 3 tight end through his final 11 games, behind only Travis Kelce and Darren Waller. The issue with expecting that continue into 2021? Well, there are many variables. The Football Team went out and acquired Ryan Fitzpatrick - who's never targeted tight ends heavily - as well as Curtis Samuel in free agency, Dyami Brown in the draft, and they've vowed to give Antonio Gibson more work this year. Volume is everything for tight ends, and if we can't guarantee it for Thomas, he's not worthy of an early-round pick. There's still certainly an avenue for 100 targets; it's just not guaranteed. Thomas should be considered a mid-to-low-end TE1.

I don't think I've ever seen more hype over a rookie tight end as I've seen for Kyle Pitts. This guy has all the makings of a future star in the NFL and he landed in a great spot to achieve that. With Julio Jones now in Tennessee, there will be more than enough targets to go around for Pitts to be a weekly starter at tight end.Logan Thomas had a breakout season in 2020 and I expect him to build on that string season and get even better with Ryan Fitzpatrick throwing him the ball. Even while playing with mediocre QBs last year, Thomas totaled 72 receptions, 670 yards, and six TDs. Thomas is one of the few TE's I would be comfortable drafting in the middle rounds.

FantasyPros
No one can or should doubt Pitts' talent or ability to succeed in the NFL long-term. He's one of the most physically gifted tight ends to ever come out of the draft, and in a few years, he's likely going to be the top pick in fantasy at the position. Given the historically poor performance of rookie tight ends in fantasy, there would ordinarily be reason to fade Pitts just a bit in redraft leagues. But Atlanta's trade of Julio Jones opens up too many targets for fantasy managers to let him slip far. Draft him as a top-5 tight end. and hope (and expect) that he bucks the trend for rookies at his position.Thomas's skills were evident all season long, but he didn't become a particularly fantasy-relevant tight end until Week 12. From that point on, he averaged nine targets, seven receptions, 60 yards receiving, and half a touchdown per game. Over the course of a full season, that would have made him the third-best tight end in fantasy in half-PPR leagues behind only Travis Kelce and Darren Waller. With Ryan Fitzpatrick under center, Washington should only become more pass-happy, which should portend good things for Thomas, especially if he continues his success in the red zone (his 16 receptions ranked second in the NFL among tight ends in 2020). Draft Thomas as a set-it-and-forget it option at a thin position.

Pitts still has a lot to prove as a rookie, but he is in a great situation playing with Matt Ryan and Calvin Ridley. He should be a mismatch nightmare and a high-end TE1.Thomas was terrific in 2020 with 140.6 fantasy points playing with three different starting quarterbacks. Thomas should be a TE1 if the Football Team can keep Ryan Fitzpatrick healthy this year.

BRoto Fantasy
With the departure of Julio Jones, many people are all aboard the Pitts bandwagon, but it might be a little premature. Rookie TEs are notoriously slow starters in their careers and are often not fantasy viable until much later. In the last 18 seasons, only two TE's (John Carlson and Evan Engram) have had more than 600 yards in their first season. Some analysts have Pitts as high as TE4, which is too high. Last year's TE4, TJ Hockenson, had 723 yards and 6TDs , numbers that only one rookie since 1988 (Engram) has come close to touching. Over the last 3 seasons, the TE4 has averaged 204.3 PPR points (17 game season), no rookie TE has reached that mark since Mike Ditka in 1961. STOP IT! To bet on Kyle Pitts to be a top 4 TE is to bet on something that has never happened before. With that being said, at the right draft price, which you won't be able to get, he should have enough opportunity to be a solid TE because of the opportunity in Atlanta.
