Mark Ringo Sleepers and Busts | Kyler Murray tore his ACL on Dec 12th. Murray had his surgery on January 3rd. I'm at a loss why so many of my peers are ranking him so high. Most folks need 12 months to recover from a torn ACL. And many don't feel close to 100% until closer to two years after their operation. This is a serious injury folks. And Murray is not a typical QB who just throws from the pocket. He's undersized. He uses his mobility a lot to elude pass rushers and pick up valuable rushing yards. He's essentially a part-time RB. That's how he hurt his knee in the first place- scrambling. Quick cuts are the most difficult skill needed to do after tearing up a knee and that's all Kyler does. For many folks, there's doubt if the knee will hold up or if it will give out like it did before. I know this firsthand after tearing my ACL a long time ago. That can lead to unintentionally compensating for it which in turn, leads to other injuries such as hamstring strains. The Cardinals' offensive line is a work in progress. They added Paris Johnson in the first round, but they need to upgrade it further. In addition, DeAndre Hopkins is most likely headed out of town. So Murray will lose his top WR threat. And they're not a good team. They'll be in the running for the top overall pick in next year's draft. There's little incentive to rush Murray back once they're eliminated from the playoffs. There's a good chance they just redshirt him this year, and play the long game by letting Murray fully recover. My advice- don't burn a draft pick and a bench spot waiting for Murray to comeback in 2023, because there's a very real chance that might not happen. Bust | (6/06) UPDATE- All indications are that Brock Purdy's elbow is healing well. Coach Shanahan seems optimistic that Purdy will be ready for week 1. If he's healthy, make no mistake folks, the starting gig is his. Lance will be the backup. Now if Purdy has a setback or plays poorly during the season then all bets are off. But it's Purdy who will run the offense to start the year. If Brock Purdy is healthy it sounds like he's the starter in San Francisco. However, that's a big if. The fact that the 49'ers went out and signed free agent QB Sam Darnold is a red flag. I mean why would they do that if they were confident Purdy would be ready for 2023? If Purdy isn't ready, I think it's Trey Lance who will man the helm. Lance was hurt more than we realized last year. He had a finger issue that wouldn't bend. He's healthy now. He's also worked on his mechanics with the same coach who helps Patrick Mahomes. Lance's current ADP at QB 26 could be a massive bargain if Purdy is shelved for the season. And if that's what transpires, I'll bump up Lance a lot in my rankings. Keep an eye on this situation as the season approaches. |
Ellis Johnson True North Fantasy Football | I'll say it louder for the people in the back - Trey Lance WILL start for the 2023 season. I've dissected this situation in an article I did, and I'm icing the cake with this ranking. Lance's skill set gives you all the belief that he can finish as a QB-one, but ironically his biggest competition is Brock Purdy. If he can win that competition then this ranking may even be conservative if anything. | |
Wolf of Roto Street Roto Street Journal | 5/26: DeAndre Hopkins released - this could signal a real "tank" for 2023, and I would not be surprised if Murray sat half, if not more, of the 2023 season -- his ceiling and floor have both dropped dramatically & Murray returns to a "Do Not Draft" 5/5: Promising recent steps in his recovery + an improved line + Hopkins here... things are looking up for Murray, a previous Top-5 No Brainer. Rumblings he may miss all of 2023 make Kyler undraftable in early offeason - but still so much upside even if you get only a half | 5/5: Sam Darnold has legitimate chance to overthrow Lance as... the seat-holder for Purdy anyways? The upside is and always will be Top-10 with Trey Lance - a Shanny Konami Code with YAC monsters surrounding him is the stuff of fantasy wet dreams - but so much needs to seemingly align at this point. Alas... if it does... 3/7: With Purdy likely out to begin 2023 & Trey expected back for OTAs, the latter will have every chance to win job & regain his enormous Konami Upside 2/8 - Big downgrade with Purdy really taking the reins, who knows if Lance will even be starting. If he is, zip him right back into the Top-12 on rushing upside alone. |
Pat Fitzmaurice FantasyPros | Kyler Murray will pose an interesting dilemma for fantasy drafters in 2023. A dangerous dual-threat QB who's averaged 21.2 fantasy points over 57 NFL starts, Murray tore his ACL on Dec. 12 and may not be ready for the start of the season, so his recovery will have to be monitored closely over the summer. Murray regressed as a passer in 2022, averaging just 6.1 yards per attempt. But Murray finished QB2 in fantasy scoring in 2020, and at his best he's a difference-making quarterback who can rack up fantasy points with both his arm and his legs. | Will Trey Lance be a starter when the 49ers kick off the 2023 season? It seems likely that he'll compete with Brock Purdy for the starter's job (assuming Purdy's elbow has healed by late summer), and it's possible 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan will put his thumb on the scale for Purdy after the seventh-round pick from Iowa State helped guide the Niners into the playoffs. The 49ers have added Sam Darnold to the mix as well. Lance is a dangerous runner with ample arm talent, and this will be his age-23 season, so there's plenty of time for him to make good on the potential that inspired the 49ers to give away multiple first-round draft picks in order to trade up and draft Lance. But the North Dakota State product has thrown just 420 passes since high school and still has a great deal to prove. Lance could be one of the best QB values of 2023 or a complete waste of a draft pick. |
