Breaking Football
Hock is all about upside. The Lions want to run the ball and they have other weapons, so he's bound to be incredibly hit or miss during his second season.
Draft Engine
Draft Engine
Catching passes from Ryan Fitzpatrick led to better production than when Gesicki had Ryan Tannehill as his quarterback during Gesicki's rookie season. He'll need to make significant strides before he's worthy of consideration for an every-week fantasy starting spot outside of deep leagues. New 68-year-old offensive coordinator Chan Gailey has a history of underutilizing tight ends. While his athleticism doesn't quite match that of Travis Kelce or George Kittle, Hockenson is in that mold as an increasingly rare tight end who can be an asset as both a blocker and a receiver. After catching six passes for 131 yards and a TD in his NFL debut, the eighth pick of the 2019 NFL Draft failed to reach 60 yards in any other game for the remainder of his rookie season.
Bart Wheeler
Hail to Fantasy Football
Up a couple of spots. If he can stay healthy, he could definitely be a TE1.
Mike Tagliere
FantasyPros
The good news? Gesicki totaled 89 targets last year, which ranked seventh among tight ends. The bad news? He finished as the No. 11 tight end and now has Chan Gailey as his offensive coordinator. In the eight years Gailey has called an offense, his tight ends have finished 28th or worse in seven of them, with Tony Gonzalez being the only one who succeeded. Gesicki has averaged a measly 6.4 yards per target in the NFL to this point, which is bottom of the barrel, so you can't say that he's the difference maker that Gailey needs to feature. Drafting him as a TE1 is too risky. There's an article I wrote this offseason that was titled, "Which Fantasy Players Should Have Scored the Most Fantasy Points." In that article, I highlighted that every target/carry/pass attempt has an expected outcome in fantasy points. A target on your own 10-yard line isn't worth as much as a target on the opponent's 20-yard line, etc. Each of the tight ends who finished top-12 in opportunity finished top-13 at year's end, so it's clearly something to look for. Based on Hockenson's pace over 16 games, he would've been the No. 12 tight end in opportunity. Now going into his second season, we should see his role grow. Hockenson was one of the least efficient players in all of football last year, and even going over the last 10 years, his 54.2 percent catch-rate ranked 331st among 357 tight ends who've seen at least 30 targets. There's only room for improvement, so if you're looking for a potential late-round tight end, he has more opportunity than most realize.
Frank Bonincontri
Fantasy Wire HQ
Will he ever live up to his draft hype potential? Solid contributor but in this neighborhood of TE's I believe thier are better optionsCamp reports are that TJ is looking unstoppable. Let's hope that's the case for 2020 so we can add another elite TE into the fantasy landscape
Dan Harris
FantasyPros
Hockenson battled injuries throughout his rookie season bit is extremely talented, seeing a high average depth of target and more than a 14% target share. He's a potential breakout candidate but there's been some pessimism on his recovery from his ankle injury, and he admitted at the start of camp that he's not 100%. Monitor his progress but unless he's fully recovered, he's not worth drafting against other TE2s going in the same area, such as Jonnu Smith and Jack Doyle.
Elliot Berkovits
Packer Report
Gesicki is a very popular breakout candidate for 2020 and I can see why. He has all the tools to be a dangerous TE, now it's just about who's throwing him the football. I think Ryan Fitzpatrick would be better for Gesicki than Tua right out the gate, but regardless, I expect Gesicki to outperform his ADP fairly easily.Hockenson had a truly strange rookie season. In his NFL debut, he caught six passes for 131 yards and a TD. Over his next 11 games, he caught only one more TD and a combined 236 receiving yards. Dealing with injuries and Matthew Stafford going down didn't help, but overall, it was a rather disappointing start for the first TE selected in the 2019 draft. He has a chance at a bounce-back season now that Stafford is slated to return, but I wouldn't want Hockenson as my only TE heading into Week 1.
Jason Petropoulos
BRoto Fantasy
All the numbers say that Gesicki should have been better last season. He was seventh in TE targets, ran the most routes from the slot of all TEs, and was Miami's only weapon outside of Parker when Williams went down. With all of that said, he was barely a player worth rostering. There is upside here, really there is, but how long can people point to SPARQ numbers over on-field numbers?
Kyle Yates
FantasyPros
Gesicki has an incredible opportunity for targets in this offense this season. At the tight end position for fantasy football, there's a ton of unknowns after the top-tier of guys and Gesicki is just as solid of a shot as some of the other guys around him in ADP. Gesicki should be relevant in 2020 and should be considered as a low-end TE1/high-end TE2.Hockenson wasn't able to stay on the field last year, but when he did play, he showed us how much of a weapon he can be. He still needs to progress in a lot of ways, but the future is bright for the young tight end. With that being said, Hockenson's going to have some games where he's a great streaming matchup, but otherwise he's unlikely to see the necessary targets to be relevant for fantasy football. He's nothing more than a mid-range TE2 with streaming upside in certain matchups this season.
Ben Wasley
The Fantasy First Down
Mike Gesicki was last season's TE11 and he was awful! He got peppered with targets and struggled to turn them into anything meaningful, for example against the Jets he received three targets inside the top 10 and finished the game with 1 fantasy point. It was awful. On the upside, he was considerably better with Ryan Fitzpatrick and has massive upside. He will play in the slot a lot and has massive room for growth in a backfield with heaps of targets available. He's a great gamble who is available in the double digit rounds.T.J. Hockenson simply isn't a viable fantasy asset. After an amazing Week 1 against the Tight End Santas the Cardinals, he had one game over 48 snaps, 4 receptions or 47 yards and scored a total of one TD. He was too rarely in the slot and got regularly overlooked for Kenny Golladay, Marvin Jones and Danny Amendola. Since then, nothing has changed! He feels at least a year away from a breakout opportunity and I'm just not willing to pay a cusp-TE1 price for him. Let someone else waste a pick and take a known fantasy performer.

Gesicki has upside profile attributes & positive opp trends: 97th percentile athlete, rising 2nd half snap share, top-5 total target distance, top-5 contested catch rate, P. Williams rehabbing torn acl, no receivers drafted, catches his own passes. @Fantasy_Mansion

Went sneaky berserk over from Week 12 on, with 5 TDs in six games (TE5 in this span). Will he be forgotten in Gailey's spread attack that prioritizes WRs, or be used as a big body WR? *Update - love reports he's speculated to be a Big Body Slot in three-wides, and the team added NO WR competition.. Geiscki could explode.Flashed "Baby Gronk" traits but disappeared far more often. Still has huge Year 2 upside
