Sleepers and Busts
What if I told you it was possible to draft Calvin Johnson and play him at TE. Would you do it? In 30 years of playing fantasy football, Kyle Pitts is the best fantasy tight end I've ever seen. I had that same feeling back in 1998 when I first saw and drafted a rookie WR from Marshall on the Vikings, Randy Moss. I had that feeling again after I saw RB Saquon Barkley. Many experts said a rookie couldn't be drafted as the 1st or 2nd RB because he hadn't done it before. Saquon had over 2,028 total yards 91 receptions 15 TDs his rookie year. To paraphrase the line from a League of Their Own, "I know the goods when I see it. And he's the goods." When his career is all said and done Kyle Pitts will rewrite the record books at TE.Fant suffered a huge loss in the offseason with the passing of his mom. One of the symptoms of grief is fatigue which could affect him this year. He's very talented, but the Denver QB situation is shaky. The o-line losing Juwann James hurts too. Fant needs Denver to trade for Aaron Rodgers or DeShaun Watson for him to reach his potential.
Tim Petropoulos
BRoto Fantasy
With the departure of Julio Jones, many people are all aboard the Pitts bandwagon, but it might be a little premature. Rookie TEs are notoriously slow starters in their careers and are often not fantasy viable until much later. In the last 18 seasons, only two TE's (John Carlson and Evan Engram) have had more than 600 yards in their first season. Some analysts have Pitts as high as TE4, which is too high. Last year's TE4, TJ Hockenson, had 723 yards and 6TDs , numbers that only one rookie since 1988 (Engram) has come close to touching. Over the last 3 seasons, the TE4 has averaged 204.3 PPR points (17 game season), no rookie TE has reached that mark since Mike Ditka in 1961. STOP IT! To bet on Kyle Pitts to be a top 4 TE is to bet on something that has never happened before. With that being said, at the right draft price, which you won't be able to get, he should have enough opportunity to be a solid TE because of the opportunity in Atlanta. While everyone raves about the physical talent Kyle Pitts has, Noah Fant, for the most part, tested better athletically. Outside of a 40-time that came in .01 second slower than Pitts, and a slightly lower speed score, Fant outperforms Pitts in most physical traits measurements. Add that to the fact that he passed the elusive 500-yard mark in his rookie season, and got over 600 yards in year two, and you have a player that is starring a third-year jump right in the face. The downside of Fant is the offense he plays in. Whether it's Lock or Bridgewater, Fant will be playing with a below-average QB in an offense that has A LOT of mouths to feed and a defense that limits the need for late-game garbage stats. In addition, he's battled injuries in his young career, so that's something to keep an eye on as well
Dan Harris
FantasyPros
No one can or should doubt Pitts' talent or ability to succeed in the NFL long-term. He's one of the most physically gifted tight ends to ever come out of the draft, and in a few years, he's likely going to be the top pick in fantasy at the position. Given the historically poor performance of rookie tight ends in fantasy, there would ordinarily be reason to fade Pitts just a bit in redraft leagues. But Atlanta's trade of Julio Jones opens up too many targets for fantasy managers to let him slip far. Draft him as a top-5 tight end. and hope (and expect) that he bucks the trend for rookies at his position.Fant missed just one game in 2020 and led the Broncos in receptions with 62. But his yards per catch dropped from 14.1 in his rookie year to just 10.9 last year, and Drew Lock had trouble getting in a rhythm. There will be plenty of options in the passing game for Denver this season, and Albert Okwuegbunam should return at some point during the year. But the Broncos surely know what they have in Fant and will likely make an effort to get him involved down the field more often. With either Lock or Teddy Bridgewater under center (unless Aaron Rodgers winds up in Denver), Fant's upside is capped a bit, but he should still be drafted as a starter in every league.
Bart Wheeler
Hail to Fantasy Football
Rookie TEs often don't pan out in fantasy, but if anyone is going to be an exception it's Pitts. Now that Julio is gone, he has a clear path to targets. He has to be on your radar among the top-5 TEs if you want to draft him this year.
Derek Lofland
FantasyPros
Pitts still has a lot to prove as a rookie, but he is in a great situation playing with Matt Ryan and Calvin Ridley. He should be a mismatch nightmare and a high-end TE1.Fant had 118.3 fantasy points in 15 games, despite one of the weakest quarterback situations in the NFL. He should be a TE1 if the Broncos can figure out an answer at quarterback.
Wolf of Roto Street
Roto Street Journal
With Julio now all-but-certain to be gone, Kyle Pitts could truly explode in Year 1
Mike Tagliere
FantasyPros
He should be a very good player for a very long time, but we've seen highly-athletic tight ends have trouble out of the gate before. In fact, rookie tight ends in general have trouble producing. I want to ask you a question: Since 1998, how many tight ends do you think have topped 627 yards in their rookie season? Two of them. Both of those tight ends saw 115-plus targets, a number Pitts won't see as long as Julio Jones and Calvin Ridley are around.
