FantasyPros
O.J. Howard's 11.8 yards per target in 2018 ranks as the second-highest mark of all time among tight ends who saw at least 40 targets. His mark of 11.1 yards per target in 2017 would rank fifth all-time, but he just missed the cutoff with 39 targets. His career mark of 11.5 yards per target is the best of all-time (since they started tracking targets). In short, he's a rock-solid presence when healthy, but he needs to stay on the fieldIf anyone outside of Kyle Shanahan tells you what to expect out of the 49ers' backfield, they're lying to you. Don't forget with even less talent on the roster last year, you couldn't figure out if it would be Matt Brieda, Alfred Morris, or Raheem Mostert. We now add Coleman, who had his best years under Shanahan, and Jerick McKinnon, who will be returning from a torn ACL. It's likely to be a timeshare, though there will be valuable weeks among them, and Coleman figures to lead the charge
Kevin Roberts
Breaking Football
The 49ers will probably use all of their backs, but I still love Coleman's upside in this system. I'll be getting some shares and hoping he makes the most of his touches.
Dan Harris
FantasyPros
Despite missing six games last year, Howard still finished as a TE1. He has as much raw talent as nearly anyone at the position and on paper, the subtraction of DeSean Jackson and Adam Humphries should only open up more targets for him. But Bruce Arians' offenses have never focused much on tight ends, so it's a bit difficult to predict what we'll see this season. Still, given his talent level, Howard is a borderline top-five option at a thin position.Coleman was . . . fine after taking over for Devonta Freeman last year, but he left something to be desired. The 49ers signed him to a two-year, $8.5 million contract, hardly money that signifies he'll be a bell-cow back. With Jerick McKinnon and Matt Breida still in the backfield, Coleman is going to need to share the work. But Kyle Shanahan reportedly is fond of Coleman from their days together in Atlanta, so expect him to lead the way. With the crowded backfield, however, it's hard to see him as much more than a high-end RB3.
Kevin Wheeler
Draftwize
OJ Howard played roughly two-thirds of the offensive snaps during the first 2 years of his career. So far this preseason, he's been in on 21 of Jameis Winston's 22 snaps. @AdamLevitan
Derek Lofland
FantasyPros
Howard had only 34 receptions, but they went for 565 yards and 5 receiving touchdowns. If the Buccaneers ever figure out how to use him, they have one of the most physically gifted tight ends in the NFL that could be like the tight ends in the top-tier.The 49ers running back situation is fluid, but I think Coleman becomes the lead back in Kyle Shanahan's offense. He would be a RB3 with some upside in a great offense for running backs.
Jason Petropoulos
BRoto Fantasy
Winston is most effective when throwing to his TEs. The biggest knock against Howard might be that Arians doesn't use his TEs, but Howard lined up in the slot or out-wide on 46% of his snaps last season (According to Graham Barfield).
Bobby Sylvester
FantasyPros
Howard may have finished as the TE13 last season but let's not forget that he only played 10 games and actually had more fantasy points per game than TE5, Jared Cook. Not only that, but Howard with get a full season of Jameis Winston who loves TEs nearly as much as anyone in the game. Howard breaks big plays and is a red-zone threat so it is within the realm of possibility that he ends up TE1 by season's end. This 49ers offense is so difficult to figure out. We know they will succeed in running the ball since Shanahan is pulling the strings, but who the primary back will be, if there is one at all, is anyone's guess. Coleman does come with substantial upside and is currently the starter but there is much more risk than anyone else in the top 30 RBs.
Nick Zylak
Fantasy Football Advice
O.J. Howard is set up to have a monster season in 2019. With Jackson and Humphries gone there are a lot of targets up for grabs. This is a team likely to finish in the top 7 in both pass attempts and passing TD's, so taking one of the three clear top targets is smart. Even when I give him an extremely fair 17% target market share, Howard gets a projection of 68/1063/9. That sort of stat line has him right on par with the top tier of Kelce/Ertz/Kittle. Howard is one of the TE's I would target in the middle rounds. It's been reported that one of Coleman/McKinnon/Breida will be inactive each week during the regular season. Breida proved to be a valuable asset last season, and assuming McKinnon is fully recovered from his torn ACL (he should be, but will get stronger as the season progresses), then it's entirely possible that Coleman is a healthy scratch some weeks this year. That's going to be frustrating for fantasy, but you can also look at it a different way. Yes, you might be upset 90 minutes before his start time (often the late start), but if they're only using two backs...then it's no longer a committee. If the only active backs heading into a week are Coleman and McKinnon...then Coleman is going to be a RB 2. That's a value for where you're getting him in drafts. I do expect Coleman to be active the most out of this group...although Breida is a great RB, and there will be plenty of weeks where the both of them are active. Ultimately, this is a situation where you're betting on the 49ers offense in the mid portion of your draft. And I'm more than ok with that. They got very unlucky last season, and should be around 8-8 to 9-7 this year. I'm very excited to see the offense this year, as I think they're going to surprise people,
