FantasyPros
Bridgewater hasn't opened the season as a team's starter since 2015, when he made the Pro Bowl for Minnesota, though he played a key role in the Saints' road to the playoffs in 2019. In five games of relief duty for Drew Brees, Bridgewater racked up 1,384 passing yards, 9 TDs, and 2 INTs with a 5-0 record. Things will be different with the division rivals this season, and Bridgewater should be asked to do more than play game manager for a team that will likely struggle. He's got a quality cast of pass-catchers around him in D.J. Moore, Robby Anderson, Curtis Samuel, and Christian McCaffrey, and he looks like a fine streamer target and 2QB mainstay. Week 1's matchup with Las Vegas is friendly.
Kevin Roberts
Breaking Football
Rivers has the pocket presence and timing to still be a top-10 fantasy passer, but he slid to QB18 last year, is aging, turns the ball over, and now has a downgrade in system and weapons.
Draft Engine
Draft Engine
Signed by the Colts to a one-year contract in March, Rivers is back with coach Frank Reich. He enjoyed one of the best three-year stretches of his career from 2013 to '15. (Reich was San Diego's QBs coach in 2013, then offensive coordinator in 2014 and '15.)Bridgewater led New Orleans to a 5-0 record while racking up nine touchdown passes with only two interceptions over five starts while Drew Brees was sidelined last season. He'll be Carolina's starter after signing a three-year, 63 million contract in March.
Bart Wheeler
Hail to Fantasy Football
With solid receiving options in Carolina, Bridgewater is flying under the radar in fantasy drafts right now. He's virtually undrated in all single QB leagues, and he could easily be a top-15 or 20 QB this year. I'm slapping the Sleeper tag on him, and it's kind of crazy to me how little buzz he's getting this offseason.
Ben Wasley
The Fantasy First Down
Philip Rivers is a really tough one to rank in 2020. While I like the idea of him playing behind an elite O-line, I don't think this offense will have enough passing volume to make him a viable weekly fantasy option. He's a nice, safe streamer/bye week cover/superflex option but in Indy, I don't see him managing much else. The Panthers look to be heading full rebuild in 2020 and that could mean two things. One, they try to shorten game, run all day and keep their defense off the field. Or two, they get stuck in a heap of shootouts and have to unleash Teddy B. With some serious quality in CMC, DJ Moore, Robby Anderson and Curtis Samuel, there's the possibility with a lot of passing upside in this offense, I just don't see it happening with any regularity or predictability, not do I think Bridgewater is good enough to rely on as anything more than a superflex/streaming option.
Mike Tagliere
FantasyPros
There's no masking it, Rivers was bad in 2019. He's now 38 years old (will be 39 in December), which is the age quarterbacks used to hit their decline (before Brady and Brees came along). Have we reached the end with him? He played behind a bad offensive line last year, something he's done through much of his career. In 2020, he'll play behind a top-three offensive line in football. He has already played under Frank Reich back when he threw for 4,286 yards and 31 touchdowns, then a career-high 4,792 yards and 29 touchdowns in 2015. Does that make a difference knowing it was five years ago? Well, yeah, in a way. The good news is that he at least knows the basics of the offense, which is important this year when we've had practically no offseason. The bad news is that chemistry will have to be built on the fly, and it's even harder when your top receiver (T.Y. Hilton) shows up to camp on the injured list. We did see Jacoby Brissett and Brian Hoyer combine for 22 touchdown passes last year and Andrew Luck throw for 39 touchdowns in 2018, so it's a good offense. If you want to select Rivers in a 2QB format, it could pay dividends, though his fantasy floor might be a bit lower than someone like Gardner Minshew who uses his legs. There are way too many variables to consider him anything more than a streamer in 1QB formats. It's going to be tough for the Panthers to have much success this year, as they have a new head coach, new play-caller, new quarterback, and an offensive line that's been shifted around, all while having very little offseason practice time. The defense is in a position to allow a ton of points, which does add appeal to Bridgewater. We should see him rack up the pass attempts, and it doesn't hurt to know that his 6.2 intended air yards per target was the lowest in the league, which should mean a lot of short completions to D.J. Moore and Christian McCaffrey. The issue is that Bridgewater offers no mobility after his reconstructive knee surgery. That means he'll have to be more efficient than other pocket passers available later in the draft, guys like Kirk Cousins and Jared Goff. Again, with no offseason, that's going to be incredibly hard to do. Save Bridgewater for 2QB leagues where he's a great target as a No. 2 quarterback with no chance to lose the starting job.
Frank Bonincontri
Fantasy Wire HQ
I swear I am the only one who is higher on Rivers than most, throwing behind a much better offensive line, indoors under a coach who is familiar with all of his strength and weakness, Rivers can most certainly get the job done in Indy
Elliot Berkovits
Packer Report
Seeing Rivers in a different uniform will be strange but I don't see his fantasy production to change all that much. He has a solid WR1 in T.Y. Hilton and a trusty TE in Jack Doyle. He'll have his big games but will also give you the occasional turnover-fest. I like more reliability at QB, he doesn't need to be drafted in 1 QB leagues.Bridgewater finds himself starting once again, this time in Carolina. I don't think there could've been a better fit for Bridgewater than with the Panthers. He'll have Christian McCaffrey to rely on in the backfield as well as speedsters DJ Moore and Curtis Samuel on the outside. Bridgewater is known for his affinity for check-downs and no team is better suited for that than the Panthers.
Kyle Yates
FantasyPros
It's highly unlikely that we see Rivers enter into the streaming QB conversation at all this season. With Rivers' high interception totals from last season, plus his inability to pick up yards on the ground, he's unlikely to ever finish within the top-12 QBs in a given week. The Panthers are going to have to throw the ball a ton this upcoming season to keep up in games. While it's unlikely that Bridgewater throws for more than 25 touchdowns, he's got a pretty good supporting cast around him. Bridgewater will be in the streaming conversation more than a few times in 2020.
