FantasyPros
Cobb provided his highest receiving total (828 yards) since 2015 in his final year with Dallas, and he'll look to build on those numbers in Houston. He'll get an upgrade at quarterback and less competition for targets, so Cobb could provide deep-league value out of the slot in PPR formats despite a limited upside.
Draft Engine
Draft Engine
Washington's '19 stats benefited from the usage that resulted from Juju Smith-Schuster missing four games with a knee injury.
Ben Wasley
The Fantasy First Down
James Washington started to live up to his potential in his second season, finishing just outside the top 50 wide receivers. He would ordinarily have significant room for growth with the return of Big Ben in 2020, but the Steelers spending their first pick on a talented outside receiver is a very bad sign for Washington. He's now in a battle with the Notre Dame rookie for the WR3 spot and it seems more likely he'll end up as the deep threat and that's always got an implied ceiling in fantasy. He a dynasty hold but no worth drafting in most redraft leagues.Entering his 10th season, you'd be forgiven for dismissing Randall Cobb as a has-been. News Flash: He's still in his 20s! While it's been a long time since Cobb put together a really good fantasy season, he does have a good opportunity heading into a wide open Texans offense. Bill O'Brien clearly likes him as he's going to cost Houston at least $18 million over the next three years. That's not chump change! Cobb will have an important slot role and is an intriguing late round gamble, especially in PPR. After all, Deshaun Watson is a stud and he needs to throw the ball short sometimes!
Mike Tagliere
FantasyPros
We have the battle of second-round receivers here, as Washington is coming off his most productive season in 2019, though it's important to note that he and Mason Rudolph played in college together, so there was chemistry there. Still, it was impressive for him to post 735 yards and three touchdowns on just 80 targets considering who was throwing to him. If the Steelers hadn't drafted Claypool, Washington would have sleeper appeal. Heck, he still does, but Claypool clouds his path. It does help that rookie minicamps were canceled and that there is no preseason action, so it's likely we see Washington get the reps out of the gate, and Roethlisberger has always talked good about him. Snagging Washington with a late-round pick might make sense, as you'll find out your answer in Week 1 against the Giants. If he plays the starter role and has a few big plays, you'll see many run to snag him off the waiver wire. On top of that, if Smith-Schuster or Johnson were to miss any time, Washington would likely be staring at six-plus targets per game.Remember how many people were fading Cobb last year, saying he'd passed his prime and wanted nothing to do with him now that he was separated from Aaron Rodgers? He went on to post his most yardage since 2015. Granted, it took him 83 targets to get there, but he showed that he was capable. Deshaun Watson hasn't been a quarterback to target his slot receivers a whole lot, but he's never had a possession-style on like Cobb, and he's never played without DeAndre Hopkins. Will things change? It's certainly within the realm of possibilities. The issue is that Keke Coutee and Kenny Stills are also solid slot receivers who can fill that role, if needed. My issue with Cobb is... what's the upside? Cole Beasley-type numbers from last year? He even finished as the No. 34 wide receiver, but was any fantasy owner excited to put him in their lineup? Maybe during bye weeks but that's about it. He's just a WR5-type option to me, and one who lacks upside.
Elliot Berkovits
Packer Report
It seems like every year we talk about James Washington as a breakout candidate and it never happens. Well, not anymore. Diontae Johnson is now looking like the Steelers future WR2 leaving Washington on the sidelines. He does not need to be drafted in redraft leagues.Randall Cobb is now a member of the Texans which is great because he'll be catching passes from Deshaun Watson, but he'll also be joining an extremely crowded WR room. He'll be competing with Will Fuller, Brandin Cooks, and Kenny Stills for targets. That's without mentioning David Johnson who will see plenty of targets. I like as a bench stash with some upside playing in a good offense, but don't expect great numbers from him weekly.
Kyle Yates
FantasyPros
Washington's had the opportunity the past couple of seasons, but he's now been replaced by Chase Claypool in this offense. The Steelers needed a big-bodied WR on the outside to allow Juju to move back into the slot, which relegates Washington to a backup role. Washington's nothing more than a hold on deep rosters. As you move into the later parts of your draft, it's difficult to find players who are going to receive the amount of targets that Cobb will in Houston. Keke Coutee has seen significant targets when he's been healthy and the Texans brought in Cobb early on in free agency too. They clearly have a plan for him and Cobb still has plenty left in the tank after averaging over 15 YPR last season in Dallas. It's not the sexiest pick in the final round of your draft, but Cobb should produce for your fantasy roster this season.
Dan Harris
FantasyPros
Throw out everything that happened for any Steelers receiver in 2019. The combination of Mason Rudolph and Devlin Hodges would (and did) sink any pass-catcher they came across. With Ben Roethlisberger back under center, there's some optimism as a vertical threat, but he's certainly been passed by Diontae Johnson in terms of "breakout Steelers receivers." With Chase Claypool also in tow, Washington's chances of fantasy relevancy seem dim, and he's more of a "handcuff" receiver to Johnson and JuJu Smith-Schuster.
