FantasyPros
The 49ers running back situation is fluid, but I think Coleman becomes the lead back in Kyle Shanahan's offense. He would be a RB3 with some upside in a great offense for running backs.
Kevin Roberts
Breaking Football
The 49ers will probably use all of their backs, but I still love Coleman's upside in this system. I'll be getting some shares and hoping he makes the most of his touches
Bobby Sylvester
FantasyPros
This 49ers offense is so difficult to figure out. We know they will succeed in running the ball since Shanahan is pulling the strings, but who the primary back will be, if there is one at all, is anyone's guess. Coleman does come with substantial upside and is currently the starter but there is much more risk than anyone else in the top 30 RBs.If you are looking for upside at the running back position in the mid-rounds, Penny may have the most you'll be able to find. Seattle is going to run run run again this season and if Carson's knee issue runs into the season, Penny might steal the job and never look back as an RB1 type performer. With that said, it is also possible he'll but a fantasy cut candidate in September.
Nick Zylak
Fantasy Football Advice
It's been reported that one of Coleman/McKinnon/Breida will be inactive each week during the regular season. Breida proved to be a valuable asset last season, and assuming McKinnon is fully recovered from his torn ACL (he should be, but will get stronger as the season progresses), then it's entirely possible that Coleman is a healthy scratch some weeks this year. That's going to be frustrating for fantasy, but you can also look at it a different way. Yes, you might be upset 90 minutes before his start time (often the late start), but if they're only using two backs...then it's no longer a committee. If the only active backs heading into a week are Coleman and McKinnon...then Coleman is going to be a RB 2. That's a value for where you're getting him in drafts. I do expect Coleman to be active the most out of this group...although Breida is a great RB, and there will be plenty of weeks where the both of them are active. Ultimately, this is a situation where you're betting on the 49ers offense in the mid portion of your draft. And I'm more than ok with that. They got very unlucky last season, and should be around 8-8 to 9-7 this year. I'm very excited to see the offense this year, as I think they're going to surprise people,I'm very excited about the upside of Penny this season. The Seahawks are going to run the ball a ton, and Penny has the chance to pass Carson as the 1A. Penny averaged 6 YPC, including 4.36 yards per carry after contact from week 9 on last season. Those each ranked 3rd among RB's with at least 40 carries over that time. His passing game role is going to be limited, but if something were to happen to Carson, then we're looking at a true three down back, on a run first offense. So, how likely is Carson to suffer an injury? Well, he's only been able to play in half of his career games due to injuries. Although most of that was time missed from his leg fracture. Ultimately, you should be drafting Penny for the talent, and the upside if he can win the starting job. And I believe that he can.
Mike Tagliere
FantasyPros
If anyone outside of Kyle Shanahan tells you what to expect out of the 49ers backfield, they're lying to you. Don't forget with even less talent on the roster last year, you couldn't figure out if it would be Matt Brieda, Alfred Morris, or Raheem Mostert. We now add Coleman, who had his best years under Shanahan, and Jerick McKinnon, who will be returning from a torn ACL. It's likely to be a timeshare, though there will be valuable weeks among them, and Coleman figures to lead the chargeIt wasn't the rookie season that many expected out of Penny, who was drafted in the first-round by the Seahawks, but 2019 is looking up. Not only did the Seahawks let Mike Davis walk in free agency (he received 146 touches last year), but Chris Carson had some work done on his knee. The Seahawks are clearly a run-first team, meaning it's possible we see both Carson and Penny fantasy relevant. Worst case scenario, you have what might be the best handcuff in football
