Tim Petropoulos
BRoto Fantasy
With the departure of Julio Jones, many people are all aboard the Pitts bandwagon, but it might be a little premature. Rookie TEs are notoriously slow starters in their careers and are often not fantasy viable until much later. In the last 18 seasons, only two TE's (John Carlson and Evan Engram) have had more than 600 yards in their first season. Some analysts have Pitts as high as TE4, which is too high. Last year's TE4, TJ Hockenson, had 723 yards and 6TDs , numbers that only one rookie since 1988 (Engram) has come close to touching. Over the last 3 seasons, the TE4 has averaged 204.3 PPR points (17 game season), no rookie TE has reached that mark since Mike Ditka in 1961. STOP IT! To bet on Kyle Pitts to be a top 4 TE is to bet on something that has never happened before. With that being said, at the right draft price, which you won't be able to get, he should have enough opportunity to be a solid TE because of the opportunity in Atlanta.Only Jimmy Graham and Rob Gronkowski have ever had back-to-back 10 TD seasons, and it wouldn't be shocking if Robert Tonyan was the third. Last season he saw 16% of the Red Zone work, a number that has room to grow because of how dependable he was. Tonyan finished first overall in catch rate and true catch rate, while creating the most separation of any TE in the league (according to PlayerProfiler). Aaron Rodgers loves to go to his sure-handed receivers the bond he built with Tomlin can blossom even more this season. That is, is Rodgers is the QB...
Dan Harris
FantasyPros
No one can or should doubt Pitts' talent or ability to succeed in the NFL long-term. He's one of the most physically gifted tight ends to ever come out of the draft, and in a few years, he's likely going to be the top pick in fantasy at the position. Given the historically poor performance of rookie tight ends in fantasy, there would ordinarily be reason to fade Pitts just a bit in redraft leagues. But Atlanta's trade of Julio Jones opens up too many targets for fantasy managers to let him slip far. Draft him as a top-5 tight end. and hope (and expect) that he bucks the trend for rookies at his position.Despite having fewer than half the targets, receptions, and yards of Travis Kelce, Tonyan tied Kelce for the most touchdowns by a tight end in 2020 with 11, and he was second among tight ends in yards per target. Despite his nose for the end zone, though, he had only 11 red zone targets (just the 19th-most among tight ends), so his production near the goal-line almost certainly isn't repeatable absent a change in usage. And, of course, there's the whole "will Aaron Rodgers return" cloud hanging over the entire Packers franchise. Assuming Rodgers does return, Tonyan should be viewed as a borderline top-10 option. Even with some natural touchdown regression, he should still have plenty of value playing with one of the greatest quarterbacks of all time, particularly with the lack of many other established options in the passing game.
Mark Ringo
Sleepers and Busts
What if I told you it was possible to draft Calvin Johnson and play him at TE. Would you do it? In 30 years of playing fantasy football, Kyle Pitts is the best fantasy tight end I've ever seen. I had that same feeling back in 1998 when I first saw and drafted a rookie WR from Marshall on the Vikings, Randy Moss. When it's all said and done Kyle Pitts will rewrite the records books at TE.Tonyan's value, like most Packers, is totally contingent on Aaron Rodgers. If Rodgers returns he has a chance to continue his ascent as an up and coming tight end. If Rodgers doesn't return he's toast.
Bart Wheeler
Hail to Fantasy Football
Rookie TEs often don't pan out in fantasy, but if anyone is going to be an exception it's Pitts. Now that Julio is gone, he has a clear path to targets. He has to be on your radar among the top-5 TEs if you want to draft him this year.
Derek Lofland
FantasyPros
Pitts still has a lot to prove as a rookie, but he is in a great situation playing with Matt Ryan and Calvin Ridley. He should be a mismatch nightmare and a high-end TE1.Tonyan had a monster year with 11 receiving touchdowns, he should be a TE1 again in 2021 due to his red zone efficiency.
Wolf of Roto Street
Roto Street Journal
With Julio now all-but-certain to be gone, Kyle Pitts could truly explode in Year 1Back with Packers = IDEAL scenario. TE3 last year and no competition added... But now Rodgers drama severely lessens his stock
Mike Tagliere
FantasyPros
He should be a very good player for a very long time, but we've seen highly-athletic tight ends have trouble out of the gate before. In fact, rookie tight ends in general have trouble producing. I want to ask you a question: Since 1998, how many tight ends do you think have topped 627 yards in their rookie season? Two of them. Both of those tight ends saw 115-plus targets, a number Pitts won't see as long as Julio Jones and Calvin Ridley are around.
