Hail to Fantasy Football
WAY up with Melvin Gordon still MIA. And even if Gordon does return, Ekeler should still have a role.
Michael Petropoulos
BRoto Fantasy
Only running back with 5 ypc and 10 ypr over the last two seasons. Yes, he struggled a bit when it was his backfield last season, but it was a small sample. I expect him to be the lead back in Gordon's absence while also operating as the receiving back. He is quite a steal in drafts right now.
Jason Petropoulos
BRoto Fantasy
Chargers RBs last season combined for a line of - 138 targets, 104 receptions, 1,029 yards, 7 TDs. With MelGo or not, Ekeler is going to have standalone value as a flex with upside as a receiving threat in that backfield. If MelGo holds out, I'd prefer Ekeler to Jackson, as he provides a safer floor and higher upside.
Bobby Sylvester
FantasyPros
We've essentially got two different fantasy assets here as Ekeler's relevance will depend entirely on the Melvin Gordon holdout. If Gordon plays, Ekeler is an RB4 depth piece to fill in during bye weeks and in case of injuries. If Gordon sits, Ekeler jumps clean into the top 25 fantasy RBs immediately.Forget last year when Jones was dreadful under Dirk Koetter's offense and burred behind Peyton Barber on the depth chart. This is a new scheme with Bruce Arians, who just so happens to be a genius for running games. If Jones starts, he should fly up draft boards in August.
Nick Zylak
Fantasy Football Advice
The Melvin Gordon news has upped the value of Austin Ekeler. It doesn't seem like the two parties are close to a deal, so Ekeler has a very real chance to open the season as the starter. The most likely scenario (although we're all really just guessing) is that Gordon holds out until mid season, plays out the rest of the year, then enters FA. Under that scenario Ekeler needs to be drafted in the middle rounds. He holds value even when Gordon returns, and he'll be extremely valuable while he's away. There's also a chance the team trades him, which would also make him a value. If you're drafting, and Gordon is still holding out, then you should be targeting both Ekeler and Jackson. As a 21-year-old last season he entered the NFL as a second round pick into a backfield that looked like it was all his. Because of that, there were reports that he didn't exactly put in maximum effort into his training and his health. So, during camp we all heard the reports that Barber was somehow winning the job. Jones proceeded to get 23 total carries…for 44 pathetic yards and a single TD. But here's the thing, he was an out of shape 21-year-old behind a terrible offensive line. In fact, he was hit at or behind the line of scrimmage on 13 of those 23 carries. Barber proceeded to take his 234 carries for just 871 yards…which is a garbage 3.7 YPC. He also gained just 92 yards on his 20 receptions. That's an embarrassing 4.6 YPR. So, what did the Bucs do in the draft and FA after that terrible season for the RB's? Nothing. They didn't draft any competition. The only back they brought in Andre Ellington in FA. This is now Jones backfield to lose. Unfortunately, there's a very real chance he actually loses it. The most recent reports indicate that this might be a committee, which isn't good news for a team that struggles to run the football, and doesn't pass to their RB's. Keep an eye on this situation.
Mike Tagliere
FantasyPros
He's never going to win you a fantasy league, but Ekeler can play a role if you're in a league with a lot of starters. Even with Melvin Gordon healthy, Ekeler touched the ball in-between 7-14 times from Week 1 to Week 7. It seemed as if the Chargers were okay with Justin Jackson as the primary workhorse if Gordon went down, but knowing Ekeler should total anywhere between 120-200 touches in the Chargers offense carries valueThe Bucs told us all we needed to know in the draft and free agency - they don't feel like they need to add another running back. No one is suggesting they're confident Jones will tear the league up, but you should be confident that he's the starter in Bruce Arians' offense, which has historically netted great results. Peyton Barber isn't the long-term answer, so look for them to find out if Jones is, which requires more than the 30 touches he got as a rookie
