Bruce Arians has just never fully bought in on Ronald Jones. As a holdover from the prior regime, Arians has kept Jones on a tight leash for the past two years. He was expected to become the starting running back for the Bucs' offense, but the team drafted Ke'Shawn Vaugh and signed LeSean McCoy and Leonard Fournette. I still believe in Jones's talent, but with all of the mouths to feed in the backfield, it will be difficult to take any Tampa running back before the double-digit rounds. Jones is still my favorite target of the bunch but it's a hazy situation. While I still expect Sony Michel to be the leader of the Patriots' running backs in touches by a significant margin, James White should be very involved as well. The Pats have an uninspiring pass-catching corps outside of White and Julian Edelman. However, quarterbacks who can scramble statistically throw to running backs less and Cam Newton fits the bill as he's not known for utilizing the position heavily. The Patriots will find ways to get White the ball, but in a lower-scoring attack, his upside isn't great.
Draft Engine
Draft Engine
White carries a considerable amount of fantasy value in PPR leagues after averaging more than five receptions per game over the past two seasons. Expect him to remain productive in 2020 despite no longer catching passes from Tom Brady.
Bart Wheeler
Hail to Fantasy Football
He was a target for me before the Fournette signing, and now he's nearly out of my top-40 RBs.
Kyle Yates
FantasyPros
The Bucs have shown us all offseason that they're not fully confident that Jones can be THE guy. They're in win now mode with Tom Brady behind center, which means that they don't want any potential weak spots on their roster. They did the smart thing from a team building perspective and brought in Leonard Fournette just mere days away from the start of the 2020 NFL season. This effectively crushes Jones' upside this season and he is now moved down to RB4 territory. While I do think Jones will hold onto the job for the first few weeks of the season, due to Fournette not even knowing the scheme or what number he's wearing yet, he'll lose it eventually. He'll be part of a committee and he'll have some bench stash appeal in fantasy, but all of the hope for Jones breaking out this season is essentially gone now.Cam Newton's now at QB for the Patriots and he's shown a propensity for targeting pass-catching RBs. White's not going to suddenly turn into Christian McCaffrey, but he's a solid value right now in redraft ADP.
Ben Wasley
The Fantasy First Down
Ronald Jones had a disappointing sophomore season, splitting carries with reliable plodder Peyton Barber and struggling with pass-protection. Nevertheless, there were positive signs for the 22-year-old as he started to establish himself with a couple of 100+ yard performances to end the season. Sadly, the Buccs have muddied the waters by drafting Ke'Shawn Vaughn and bringing in LeSean McCoy and more recently, Leonard Fournette. That makes RoJo very hard to trust this season. This is a backfield worth avoiding until the very late rounds.James White had a disappointing drop in fantasy production but somehow managed to manage a RB2 finish in half-PPR on the back of 67 rushes, 72 receptions, 908 yards and 6 TDs. He'll remain a PPR staple but lacks the true upside he once had with Jarrett Stidham at the controls. While the Auburn alum never had great RB receiving options, he showed a total disinterest in using them and this will certainly affect the 28-year-old Pat. He remains a valid weekly option but I wouldn't actually draft him at his Top 30 projection. I'd look elsewhere and suggest trying to win your league rather than avoiding losing it.
Dan Harris
FantasyPros
Jones' value was ascending right up until the Bucs signed Leonard Fournette, after which it dropped significantly. Fournette's contract suggests he's going to see (or at least he signed expecting to see) significant playing time, which likely moves him into a rough timeshare with Jones. Both Fournette and Jones can be drafted as Flexes, but Jones is more likely to contribute earlier in the season while Fournette gets comfortable with the offense. Draft Jones if you need someone immediately, but Fournette if you're taking a longer-term view.White derives almost all of his value from his prowess as a receiver, as he's topped 67 carries just once in his career. While his work in the passing game (218 targets, 159 receptions over the past two years) has kept him as a solid, if perhaps inconsistent, fantasy option, it's unclear if that will continue this season. He will undoubtedly remain the Patriots' passing-down back, but it's unlikely that he'll see quite the same production with Cam Newton, even with how much work Christian McCaffrey saw in the receiving game. He'll remain an option in PPR leagues and perhaps in deeper half-PPR formats, but that's about all.
Mike Tagliere
FantasyPros
We heard the Bucs say all offseason that Jones was their guy. We didn't even hear about them meeting with any of the free agent running backs. Then we heard the name Keshawn Vaughn in the third round, creating a problem for Jones. When teams select a running back on Day 2, it's typically to play them right out of the gate, even if it's not a clear-cut loss of the job for Jones. No matter which way you slice it, he has some new and improved competition. Another update: The Bucs signed Leonard Fournette after he was cut by the Jaguars, adding uncertainty to Jones' draft stock. He may get the first snap, but this reeks of a timeshare, similar to the one that Jones and Peyton Barber had last year.White has always been a value, especially in PPR formats, but with Tom Brady gone, this team is likely to throw a whole lot less, and White has never averaged more than 5.9 carries per game. He's not likely to live up to his usual RB3-type numbers. I wouldn't want to trust him every week.
Seth Miller
Crossroads Fantasy Football
Will be interesting to see who's throwing him the ball in 2020 and if Sony/Harris can get involved in the passing game/on the field(cough, cough Harris) at all. Oh great, Cam. A impossible offense to predict which Bill probably loves. We'll just have to rely far too much on preseason because relying on what Bill normally does would be relying on him never doing what you think. White has never played a year without Brady and we'll now have to rely on Stidham for those targets. I wonder if TE gets more involved this year, with Ben Watson leading the TE group with 24 targets last year. Could potentially impact White, plus probably not being top 5 in pass ATT.

Jones was a great RB prospect coming out. Was efficient last year and was very good as a receiver. 6/7 other RBs to have over 7.5 YPT on 35 targets at either 21or 22 went on to have a top 5 RB finish at some point in their career. Lots of upside here.Pass-catching weapon in a RB room that is suddenly depleted. Lacking passing weapons will allow White to earn targets.

Jones began to show flashes of potential as the season progress last year and now in a revamped Bucs offense, he has legitimate upside. While there is upside, there are also plenty of risks involved in this pick. The Bucs just spent a 3rd-round pick on Ke'Shawn Vaughn as well as signing veteran LeSean McCoy. I think it's going to come down to Jones versus Vaughn and whoever wins should have legitimate fantasy value.Brady's departure will undoubtedly affect White's consistency but with Cam Newton as the presumed starter, White may be the best Patriot worth rostering this season. We've seen Christian McCaffrey have tremendous success with Newton as his QB and while I don't think White has near that upside, he is solid flex in option in PPR formats.

We know Cam can carry a pass-catching RB, as we saw him do it with CMC. However, Cam's health is questionable, his arm is questionable, and we don't know what the offense will look like. He could end up as a PPR flex option, but I'll likely try my luck elsewhere.

Jones tallied a strong 10.0 yards per catch on his 31 receptions. Pro Football Focus graded him just 73rd among all RBs in receiving. He fared better by Football Outsiders metrics, though, ranking 17th in DVOA and 20th in DYAR among 50 qualifying backs. PFF liked his rushing better, grading Jones 43rd at the position. FO had him 24th among 45 qualifiers in rushing DVOA, though at a rate below average-level performance. Fantasy wise, Jones ranked 35th in PPR points per game. @SchaufDSSince the start of the 2017 season, only Christian McCaffrey and Alvin Kamara have more RB targets than James White. Probably has quite a bit to do with Brady, but really so no reason why this won't continue with Cam or Stidham.

Emerged from the NFL Draft less scathed than anticipated. He might lose the job to Rookie Vaughn, but as of now Jones also could remain a three-down guy in one of the NFL's highest powered offenses.
