Zachary Hanshew
FantasyPros
Smith has largely been a non-factor in the Saints' passing game over his first two seasons in the league, racking up a 46/661/10 line on 69 targets. The good news is that his big-play ability and breakaway speed give him some dart-throw appeal (10 TDs on just 46 receptions), but the bad news is the arrival of Emmanuel Sanders and improved health of Alvin Kamara should take looks from Smith, who's already struggled to find consistency.
Ben Wasley
The Fantasy First Down
The arrival of Emmanuel Sanders in New Orleans appears to put Tre'Quan Smith on the outer but it's not quite as bad as it seems. Ted Ginn was already getting a heap of snaps on the outside so Smith will remain on the field primarily in three wide sets and that will continue to disappoint his fantasy owners. He can be rostered in very deep leagues but his upside is severely capped.Russell Gage took over from Mo Sanu mid-season and did a solid job in the Falcons slot. He particularly shone when at least one of the Falcons big three (Jones, Ridley and Hooper) was injured but with Hooper gone, there is some opportunity in an offense that will likely be very pass-heavy again. That make Gage a late-round safety pick but little more.
Mike Tagliere
FantasyPros
It seems many have simply forgotten that Smith is still on the roster despite being a third-round pick by the Saints just two years ago. It's fair considering he's seen just 69 targets in that span, but what if Michael Thomas had to miss some time? Smith has averaged a ridiculously high 9.6 yards per target in his first two seasons and can be lined up all over the field. He's also scored a touchdown every 6.9 targets (10 of them on 69 career targets). If you play in a dynasty league and Smith can be had on the cheap, make that move. It's very possible he'd be the top receiver on the team if Thomas were held out, as he has experience in the offense and the Saints have every reason to want him to succeed. Keep him on waiver wire speed dial in redraft leagues.Once Mohamed Sanu was traded, Gage saw a ridiculous 66 targets in nine games, though it did help that both Calvin Ridley and Austin Hooper both missed time during that stretch. I expected the Falcons to fill that role with someone in the draft or free agency, but it never happened, so it's possible we see Gage as a bye-week filler on fantasy rosters, especially if any of the other pass-catchers were to miss time. There isn't much upside here, though. Best case scenario is that we're looking at someone like Cole Beasley from 2019. Again, could play a role in fantasy, but don't see a consistent fantasy producer.
Elliot Berkovits
Packer Report
On paper, Tre'Quan Smith should be a player that's talked about a breakout candidate but in reality, he just doesn't see enough volume to be fantasy relevant. Michael Thomas and Alvin Kamara will get most of the targets and whatever doesn't go to them, will go to TE Jared Cook. Smith is a much better best ball player than redraft player.
Kyle Yates
FantasyPros
Smith's a talented wideout, but he simply hasn't been consistent enough to be useful for fantasy football. With the addition of Emmanuel Sanders, Smith's upside is completely gone in this offense. It's unlikely that we ever see Smith be a weekly contributor in 2020, but he could have some appeal in some matchups for DFS.When you get outside the top-15 rounds, it's difficult to locate players that are even starters on their own rosters. In some instances, you're taking shots on the fourth or even fifth wide receivers on some teams that are only going to be relevant if an injury happens to the players above them on the depth chart. Meanwhile, Gage is hanging out at WR102 in ADP Consensus right now and is going to see plenty of targets in this high-powered offense. Gage isn't going to be a league-winner, by any means, but he can be a player that you roll into your lineups on bye weeks that will see his guaranteed 4 to 6 targets per game.
Kevin Wheeler
Draftwize
From the time he first played 50% of the snaps in Week 8, Russell Gage averaged 7.3 targets over the final 9 games, a 116-target pace. Role's still there in a high-volume offense. @YardsPerGretch
Dan Harris
FantasyPros
Smith has always felt like an explosion waiting to happen, as evidenced by his 10 touchdowns on just 46 receptions the last two seasons. He may have been a trendy breakout pick with Ted Ginn Jr. gone, but the Saints added Emmanuel Sanders, all but ending Smith's realistic chance for fantasy relevancy. In deeper leagues, he's worth a flier in case Michael Thomas or Sanders sustain injuries. But in standard-sized leagues, there's no reason to bother drafting him.
