Once you get down to around the No. 50 overall pick, the sure things are gone, so why not take one of the elite players at his position? Wilson has now finished as a top-three quarterback in three of the last four seasons and has never fallen out of the top-12 quarterbacks in any of his six seasons. His defense is as bad as its ever been, which should force him to partake in some shootouts that never seemed to happen before. Despite the elite defense that was being played, Wilson has posted QB1 numbers in 47.9 percent of his games, including a career-high 68.8 percent of games in 2017. He offers safety and upside, which is rare at the position. To give you an idea as to how unrepeatable Wentz's 2017 season was from a touchdown standpoint, let's compare him to Aaron Rodgers. Wentz's touchdown rate was 7.5 percent last year, a number that Rodgers has hit just once in his career. Remember, we are talking about the guy who I'd consider the best of all-time. If we dialed back his touchdown rate to 6.0 percent, which is still elite, he would've thrown seven less touchdowns, which would drop him from the QB5 to QB12. Coming off an ACL tear may limit his mobility at the start of the season, which further impacts his fantasy performance. I'd avoid him in standard 1QB leagues because it's now been confirmed that he'll miss the season opener, and potentially more.
Rich Piazza
Fantasy Shed
The Seahawks didn't do much to improve that offensive line in free agency or the draft. Nick Vannett and Ed Dickson just don't get me excited, and the wide receiver group is more or less the same. However, his rushing ability gives him a significant boost in the rankings. His ranking will obviously depend on his health and availability heading into the season. He has said that week 1 is his goal, but players are usually more optimistic than what reality is. Make no mistake, he suffered a serious injury that generally requires a 9-12 month recovery . September would be on the very low end of that scale, and I could see him missing the first few games as a precaution.
Derek Lofland
Fantasy Football Maniax
Wilson averaged 25.7 fantasy points per game and he should still be the top player in this offense, even with a new offensive coordinator, Brian Schottenheimer. He did lose TE Jimmy Graham and WR Paul Richardson in free agency, but his ability to run the football still keeps him in the elite fantasy quarterback discussion. Wentz was having a MVP season and he averaged 25.1 fantasy points per game before tearing his ACL. It seemed like a certainty he would be ready for Week 1, but now it sounds like he may miss 1-2 games, which would put a dent on his fantasy value.
Andrew Gould
FantasyPros
Nobody amassed more standard fantasy points than Wilson, who notched a full three points per game more than QB runner-up Cam Newton. Although it's his first QB1 finish, he has cracked the top five three times and has never finished lower than 11 during his six-year career. Wilson's streak of attempting more passes every year is in jeopardy with Seattle eager to rediscover its rushing roots, but the Legion of Boom's demise may force the Seahawks into more shootouts. Wilson's legs (545.8 rushing yards per season), precision (2.0 career INT %) and durability (he has never missed a game) make him an elite contributor worth grabbing if everyone else is ignoring quarterbacks early. Like Deshaun Watson, Wentz is also a regression risk coming back from an ACL injury. Last year's 7.5 TD % over 13 outstanding games is bound for a correction course. His 7.49 YPA and 253.5 passing YPG hardly depict a transcendent superstar, so don't reach for last year's breakout, who is uncertain to play in Week 1.
Kevin Wheeler
NFL Mock
Eagles QB Carson Wentz on playing Week 1: "It's gonna be close." @AlbertBreer Just grab a QB in the last round if you draft Wentz. He can be drafted in the Luck/Cousins tier, I have him lower based on the idea that he could miss a few games as he recovers from the knee injury.
Brandon Funston
The Athletic
Wilson has finished top 3 at the QB position in three of the past four seasons - his combination of throwing and running skills is unmatched - fear not a run-heavy approach by SEA in '18, big-play shots and Wilson runs will still be a major part of the new offense
Bobby Sylvester
FantasyPros
Wilson has been a top-three fantasy QB in three of the past four seasons. Even without weapons or an offensive line, he is a safe bet to deliver once again. With that said, the difference between him and Rodgers is substantial enough that you ought to wait several rounds to even consider Wilson. If Wentz had posted a TD-rate even as "low" as Tom Brady's career average, we'd be talking about a mid-range QB1 from last year. Add in the recovery from a significant injury and missing the pre-season, and I can't imagine taking a risk on him returning QB1 value again.
Chet Gresham
WalterFootball
Wilson has such great upside, even in games where he isn't at his best, that I find it hard to not rank him second at the moment. I would love to see the Seahawks add some receiving weapons and offensive linemen, but no matter what, Wilson gets the job done on many fronts.Wentz will miss this offseason due to injury and might not be fully ready to go Week 1. He showed enough last season to keep the faith, but I don't think we should go all-in on him just yet, especially as he'll probably go fairly early after his MVP-caliber season.
Staff Rankings
QB List
Considering the fact that the Seahawks have one of the worst offensive lines in football, it's pretty amazing Russell Wilson had the season he had. That line isn't likely to be any different this season unfortunately, and while Duane Brown is a solid left tackle (the most important position on the line, in my opinion), he's also got to deal with having Ethan Pocic at the left guard position who is not good, as well as D.J. Fluker who's had some major problems in the pass blocking game. All that being said, Wilson is absurdly talented and is amazing at evading free rushers. Last year, his passer rating was actually better in a blitz than not (109.3 vs. 90.7). Considering his offensive line, that's just downright impressive. If he could put up the numbers he did last year with the line he had, I don't see any reason he can't do it again. I do have on concern though - last year no quarterback through the ball into contested red zone situations than Russell Wilson, and he was largely successful thanks to Jimmy Graham, finishing the year with 23 touchdown passes in the red zone (third-best in the league). Graham is gone now, and he's replaced by Ed Dickson, who's not even remotely as good as Graham, so I could see that detracting from Wilson's value.Wentz took a gigantic step forward last year to put up an excellent season that was sadly derailed by an ACL injury late in the year. Still, the strides Wentz made deserve to be praised. Perhaps the biggest improvement he made was his concentration under pressure. During his rookie season, Wentz had a 94.4 QB rating in a clean pocket, but just a 32.8 QB rating when under pressure. That totally changed last year, as his clean pocket QB rating was 110.3 while his rating under pressure was 81.7. That being said, he still showed some vulnerability when he was blitzed, with a 51.3% completion percentage and just 6.5 yards per attempt-among the worst in the league from starters. That being said, Wentz should still provide loads of fantasy value, especially given how excellent he performed in the red zone last year, throwing 24 touchdowns with nary an interception or turnover-worthy throw. He also was excellent throwing the ball deep, with a 109.1 QB rating on go routes-which comprised about 15% of his throws last year. While I am a tiny bit concerned about how Wentz will look coming back from an ACL injury, I'm still a big believer in his talent and the progress he made last season.
Kevin Roberts
Breaking Football
Wilson was the top dog last year but he lost a red-zone beast and one of his top WRs. I still respect his upside and dual threat ability, but I'm not drafting him to be that same guy in 2018.Wentz might be higher for me but he's got the knee and rehab in the way. If all signs point to no issues, he's going to end up being a huge steal
Jody Smith
FantasyPros
Last year's top-ranked QB will be the first QB picked in plenty of leagues. Wilson may have to rely on his arm more this season, as Seattle's once-dominant defense looks to take a major step back. Wentz really blossomed under Doug Pederson but tore his ACL very late in the season. He has the potential to move up if he ends up fully healed in time for some August action.
